Parking Brake Adjustment

Special Tools

WARNING:

Refer to Brake Dust Warning .

  1. Apply, then release the parking brake to ensure proper operation.
  2. Rear Brake Rotor - Remove [2x] - Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (SRW) , or Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (DZW)

    NOTE:

    Typical park brake rotor shown, yours may vary based on vehicle and option content.

    Set the J-21177-A  Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gauge so that it lightly contacts the parking brake shoe friction surface of the brake rotor (1) at its widest point.

  4. Tighten the set screw on the J-21177-A  Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gauge to ensure the proper measurement when removing the tool from the rotor (1).

    NOTE:

    Typical park brake system shown, yours may vary based on vehicle and option content.

    Position the J-21177-A  Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gauge over the park brake shoes (1) at the widest point.

  6. Rotate the park brake shoe adjuster until the park brake shoes just contact the J-21177-A  Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gauge.
  7. Using a feeler gauge, set the parking brake shoe clearance to 0.66 mm (0.026 in).
  8. Repeat steps 4 - 7 for the opposite side.
  9. Install the rear brake rotors and secure with hand tightened wheel nuts installed with the cone facing outward.
  10. Rotate the rear brake rotors. Observe the amount of effort required for rotation, and the amount of drag, if present.
  11. If drag is present, repeat steps 4 - 7.
  12. Rear Brake Rotor - Install [2x] - Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (SRW) , or Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (DZW)
  13. Lower the vehicle to curb height.
  14. NOTE:

    If the rear wheels rotate during the following test, readjust the parking brake shoes.

  15. Apply the parking brake. Verify that the wheels DO NOT rotate freely.
    • The wheels should not rotate forward.
    • The wheels should not rotate rearward.
  16. Release the parking brake. Verify that the wheels rotate freely.
  17. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
