Installation Procedure

    Ensure the piston ring end gaps are positioned 90 degrees to each other.

    • Upper compression ring joint (1)
    • Lower compression ring joint (2)
    • Upper oil ring rail joint (5)
    • Oil ring rail spacer joint (4)
    • Lower oil ring rail joint (3)

    NOTE:

    The connecting rods and caps must be installed in the same order and orientation in which they were removed. If new connecting rods are required, the connecting rod is provided as an assembly, and the upper rod will need to be disassembled from the lower cap.

    Connecting Rod Bearing (2) - Install NEW [4x]

      NOTE:

      The connecting rod bearing anti-rotation tab grooves are to point toward the right-hand side of the engine.

    1. Install the bearing inserts into the connecting rod and the connecting rod cap.
    2. Lubricate the connecting rod bearings with engine oil. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
  3. Install the EN-52525  Connecting Rod Guide Set into the connecting rod (1) bolt holes. This protects the crankshaft journal during piston and connecting rod installation.
  4. Install J-8037  Ring Compressor, piston (1), and the connecting rod to the correct bore.
    1. Lubricate the piston and the piston rings with engine oil.
    2. Do not disturb the piston ring end gap location.
    3. The piston must be installed so that the arrow mark on the top of the piston points to the front of the engine.
    4. Lubricate the engine bore with engine oil, then place the piston in its matching bore.
    5. Tap the piston into its bore with a hammer handle. Guide the connecting rod to the connecting rod journal while tapping the piston into place.
    6. Hold the J-8037  Ring Compressor against the engine block until all the rings have entered the cylinder bore.
    7. Remove the connecting rod guides from the connecting rod bolt holes.

    NOTE:

    Ensure that the connecting rod cap is properly oriented on the connecting rod.

    Connecting Rod Bearing (3) - Install NEW [4x]

  6. Connecting Rod Cap (2) - Install [4x]
  7. CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution

    CAUTION:

    This vehicle is equipped with torque-to-yield or single use fasteners. Install a NEW torque-to-yield or single use fastener when installing this component. Failure to replace the torque-to-yield or single use fastener could cause damage to the vehicle or component.

  8. Install the NEW connecting rod bolts (1) and tighten using the EN-45059-A  Angle Meter - Fastener Specifications
  9. Install the remaining connecting rod and piston assemblies.

    NOTE:

    Rotate the crankshaft to ensure that it moves freely and does not bind.

    Measure the connecting rod side clearance with a feeler gauge (1). ENGINE MECHANICAL SPECIFICATIONS for the permitted values.

  11. Measure the piston deck height. ENGINE MECHANICAL SPECIFICATIONS for the permitted values.

    Ensure proper use of room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealant. Use of Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) and Anaerobic Sealant

  13. Clean the engine block sealing surface and ensure the bolt threads are free of RTV and debris prior to RTV bead application.
  14. Clean the lower crankcase extension housing and ensure the housing is free of oils and finger prints prior to RTV bead application.
  15. NOTE:

    DO NOT allow the RTV to skim over, the crankcase extension housing must be installed within 8 minutes of RTV being applied.

  16. Apply a 4 mm bead of sealant (1) to the crankshaft rear oil seal housing. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
  17. Apply 6 mm bead of sealant to the locations indicated, dimension a. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

    Lower Crankcase Extension (1) - Install

  19. Lower Crankcase Extension Bolt (3) - Install and tighten in sequence [5x] - Fastener Specifications
  20. Lower Crankcase Extension Bolt (2) - Install and tighten in sequence [10x] - Fastener Specifications

    NOTE:

    Balancer shaft driven sprocket is keyed to fit one way on the balancer driven shaft.

    Install the balancer chain and balancer shaft driven sprocket to the balancer driven shaft:

    1. Ensure the marks on the balancer driven shaft (2) face each other.
    2. Align the double yellow links (4) on the balancer shaft chain to the double timing marks on the balancer shaft driven sprocket (3).
    3. Align the pink link (1) to the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket (5).

    If the balancer chain tensioner (1) needs to be assembled, install the check ball spring (2), plunger orifice (3), main spring (4) and the plunger (5). Then install the EN-955-10-A  Locking Pin to reset the tensioner.

    NOTE:

    EN-52483  Cover Installation Guide Pins are used to ensure the cover is aligned properly and aids in keeping the crankshaft rear oil seal housing square to the engine block. Use the EN-52483  Cover Installation Guide Pins next to the crankshaft rear oil seal housing location pins.

    Install the EN-52483  Cover Installation Guide Pins (2).

    Ensure proper use of room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealant. Use of Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) and Anaerobic Sealant

    NOTE:

    Use the seal protector/installer that comes with the new crankshaft rear oil seal housing.

    Install the supplied seal protector/installer (3) at the crankshaft rear oil seal. Adjust the seal protector/installer to the edge of the lip seal (4).

  38. Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Housing (2) - Install NEW
    1. Align the new housing (2) to the EN-52483  Cover Installation Guide Pins (1).
    2. Stop when the seal protector contacts the end of the crankshaft.
    3. Now press in the center of the cover, allowing the crankshaft end to push out the protector.
    4. Once completed, inspect the outer perimeter of the seal and ensure it is seated correctly, and has not folded out of position.

    Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Housing Bolt (1) - Install, but do NOT tighten [14x]

    Engage the EN-52476  Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool (1) slide through the flex plate teeth.

    Automatic Transmission Flex Plate (2) - Install

    Ensure that the timing pin is in time with the flex plate hole and then disengage the pin by pulling back and rotating 90 degrees.

    Oil Pump Suction Pipe Gasket (3) - Install NEW

    Spray Low VOC brake cleaner on the lower crankcase extension sealing surface and wipe off with a clean shop towel. Avoided touching the surface after cleaning and dry with shop air.

  54. Wipe the oil pan surface with Adhesion Plastic Pan Primer Promoter using a clean shop towel. Allow the cleaner to flash / evaporate. Wipe off the sealing surfaces with a lint free cloth. Do not touch the sealing surface after cleaning to avoid introducing contaminants and debris to the bonding surface. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
  55. Ensure proper use of room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealant. Use of Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) and Anaerobic Sealant
  56. NOTE:
    • Do NOT put the RTV on the lower (inside) step of the oil pan or on the flat outer flange of the oil pan near or around the bolt holes. Improper RTV application to the mating surfaces of the oil pan may result in oil leaks.
    • Do not allow the RTV (1) to skin over. The oil pan must be installed within 10 minutes of RTV application.
    • The RTV bead should be a uniform diameter to ensure the best seal upon assembly. Do not allow the RTV to flatten before assembly.
    • Proper application of the RTV bead around the ledge will allow the RTV to flow to the lower step on the inside of the oil pan when it is reinstalled. This will fill the lower step resulting in a seal around the inside of the oil pan.
  57. Apply a 3 mm (0.118 in) diameter bead of RTV (1) around the ledge of the oil pan. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

    Install the EN-52483  Cover Installation Guide Pins (3) in two locations to ensure proper oil pan alignment.

  59. Oil Pan (1) - Install NEW
  60. Install and hand tighten 4 lower oil pan bolts (2) in each corner to hold the oil pan (1) in place.

  62. Lower Oil Pan Bolt (2) - Install and hand tighten [16x]
  63. NOTE:

    The oil pan (1) must be fastened to final torque specification within 15 minutes after applying the sealer.

  64. Lower Oil Pan Bolt (2) - Tighten in sequence [20x] - Fastener Specifications

    Cylinder Head Gasket (1) - Install NEW

  66. Cylinder Head (2) - Install
  67. Cylinder Head Bolt (3) - Install NEW and hand tighten [10x]
  68. Cylinder Head Bolt (4) - Install NEW and hand tighten [3x]
  69. Cylinder Head Bolt (5) - Install NEW and hand tighten [3x]
  70. Cylinder Head Bolt (6) - Install NEW and hand tighten [2x]
  71. Tighten the 18 cylinder head bolts (3, 4, 5, 6) in sequence. Fastener Specifications

    Use low VOC brake cleaner to ensure the surface areas are clean. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

  73. EN-46109  Engine Front Cover Installation Guide Pins (2) - Install
  74. Apply a 3 mm wide RTV bead along the edge of the cylinder head. Path is perpendicular to the crank axis. Bead is centered 2.5 mm back from front edge of head. Bead runs the entire length of sealing surface across sealing land on both sides. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

    Camshaft Cover (1) - Install

    NOTE:

    Ensure the EN-52462-A  Camshaft Alignment Tool is installed and camshafts are in the timed position.

  77. Rock the camshaft carrier back and fourth to seat the camshaft carrier cover onto the two dowels in the cylinder head sealing surface.

    Camshaft Cover Bolt (1) - Install and hand tighten [5x]

  80. If a NEW threaded component is being installed, loosen the adhesive using a metal pick or similar tool before proceeding. If threaded component is reused, prepare the threaded component using the following steps:
    1. Remove any loose cured adhesive from the external threads of the component using a lint free cloth.
    2. Thread the cleaned component into the internal mating threads and remove to loosen trapped cured adhesive.
    3. Apply thread locking adhesive to the external threads of the component. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
    4. Ensure there are no gaps in the thread locking adhesive once applied to the component.
  81. Camshaft Cover Stud (2, 3) - Install and hand tighten [18x]
  82. Camshaft Cover Bolt (1) - Tighten in sequence [4x] - Fastener Specifications

  89. If a NEW threaded component is being installed, loosen the adhesive using a metal pick or similar tool before proceeding. If threaded component is reused, prepare the threaded component using the following steps:
    1. Remove any loose cured adhesive from the external threads of the component using a lint free cloth.
    2. Thread the cleaned component into the internal mating threads and remove to loosen trapped cured adhesive.
    3. Apply thread locking adhesive to the external threads of the component. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
    4. Ensure there are no gaps in the thread locking adhesive once applied to the component.
  90. Timing Chain Guide Bolt (4) - Install and tighten - Fastener Specifications
  91. Timing Chain Tensioner Gasket (3) - Install NEW
  92. Timing Chain Tensioner (2) - Install

    NOTE:

    Lubricate under the washer surface.

    Lubricate the NEW camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolts (1) with clean engine oil where indicated. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

    Install the exhaust camshaft position actuator (3) and the intake camshaft position actuator (4) before installing the tool.

    Install and hand tighten the NEW camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolt (1).

    NOTE:

    Ensure the camshaft carrier and cylinder head face are clean and free from RTV prior to installing the EN-52461-200  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool 2.7L Adapter.

    EN-52461-200  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool 2.7L Adapter (2) - Install [2x]

  98. Install and tighten the two EN-52461-200  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool 2.7L Adapter bolts (3) enough to secure the EN-52461-200  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool 2.7L Adapter (2) to the cylinder head.

  100. Install and tighten the two EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolts (3).

    CAUTION:

    Hold the camshaft position actuator firmly and squarely during camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolt removal/installation. Failure to do so may result in damage to the inside of the camshaft position actuator.

    NOTE:

    Pressure must be applied towards the engine on the EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool at points (3) prior to and during any time the following two conditions are simultaneously met.

    • The camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolt is loosened or removed.
    • The EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolts (2, 3) are loosened.

    Shift the slack in the timing chain to be taken up by the timing chain tensioner.

    1. Use a wrench to turn the EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (1) counter-clockwise 6 N.m 53 lb in, then hold.
    2. Tighten the EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolt (2) to lock the intake actuator securely in place.
    3. Remove the wrench from EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (1).
    4. Use a wrench to turn the EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (4) counter-clockwise 6 N.m 53 lb in, then hold.
    5. Tighten the EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolt (3) to lock the exhaust actuator securely in place.
    6. Remove the wrench from EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (4).

    Tighten the NEW camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolt (1). Fastener Specifications

    Loosen the EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolts (2) to un-lock the actuators.

  105. Disengage the tangs of the EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (1) from the intake and exhaust camshaft position actuator slots.

    Remove the EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolts (3).

    Remove the two EN-52461-200  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool 2.7L Adapter bolts (3).

    Loosen and disengage the EN-52462-A  Camshaft Alignment Tool bolt (2) from camshaft carrier.

    Clean and apply sealant to the camshaft cover core hole plug (1) [2x]. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

    NOTE:

    The sealing surface must be clean and free of contaminants prior to applying the RTV sealant. Do not touch the sealing surface once it has been cleaned.

    Clean the sealing surface of the NEW engine front cover with low VOC brake cleaner, then wipe dry with a clean lint free cloth.

  118. Ensure proper use of room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealant. Use of Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) and Anaerobic Sealant

  120. Apply a bead of RTV (1) to the NEW engine front cover. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

    Engine Front Cover Locating Pin (1) - Install [2x]

  122. NOTE:

    Leave the seal protector that is supplied with the new engine front cover in place prior to installation. The crankshaft sprocket will push the seal protector out of the engine front cover as it is installed. Inspect the perimeter of the seal once the NEW engine front cover is completely seated to ensure the lip of the seal is not folded over itself.

  123. Engine Front Cover (2) - Install NEW
  124. Engine Front Cover Bolt (3) - Install and hand tighten [8x]

  126. Engine Front Cover Bolt (3) - Install and hand tighten [2x]

    NOTE:

    The timing pin (3) is installed into the flexplate for engine timing procedures, it can be damaged if torque is applied to the flexplate with the timing pin engaged. The pin must be placed in the retracted position before torque is applied to the flexplate.

    Install the slide (4) of the EN-52476  Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool.
