Cleaning and Inspection Procedure - Required: Notes
- WARNING:

Clean the camshaft position actuator (1) with cleaning solvent.
- Remove any dirt, debris, or restrictions within the oil passages (6).
- Dry the camshaft position actuator with compressed air.
- Insert a tie strap through the center of the camshaft position actuator and around the gear teeth to keep the components aligned.
- Inspect the camshaft position actuator for the following conditions:
- A broken spring (2)
- Damage to the timing sprocket teeth (3)
- Damage to the reluctor wheel (4)
- Damage to the center bore (5)
- Damage to the oil passages (6)
- If any of the above conditions exist, replace the camshaft position actuator.
- NOTE:
- The inspection procedure is provided for diagnostic purposes only.
- Do not use the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve bolt again. Install a NEW valve during assembly.
Inspect the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve bolt for the following conditions:
- Dirt, debris, restrictions or damage within the oil passages (1)
- Damaged threads (2)
If the threads of the valve are damaged, also inspect the threads in the front of the camshaft for damage.
- Dirt, debris, restrictions or damage within the oil inlet (3)
If debris is detected, the engine assembly should be inspected to determine the source of contamination.
- NOTE:
Do not soak or submerge the fuel pump in solvent.
Clean the fuel pump (2) and valve lifter follower (5).
- Dry the fuel pump and valve lifter follower with compressed air.
- Inspect the fuel pump for the following conditions:
- Damage to the connection ports (1)
- Damage to the electrical connector (2)
- Damage to the sealing surface (3)
- Damage to or a bent or binding plunger (7)
- Damage to the mounting holes (8)
- Inspect the valve lifter follower for the following conditions:
- A scored or worn fuel pump contact surface (4)
- A severely scuffed or worn body (5)
- Binding or roughness of the roller (6)
- If any of the above conditions exist, replace the fuel pump and/or the valve lifter follower.
Clean the automatic transmission flex plate (1) in solvent.
- Dry the automatic transmission flex plate with compressed air.
- Inspect the automatic transmission flex plate for the following conditions:
- Stress cracks around the automatic transmission flex plate-to-torque converter mounting bolt hole locations (1) and/or automatic transmission flex plate-to-crankshaft (2, 4)
- Cracks at welded areas that retain the ring gear onto the automatic transmission flex plate (3)
- Damaged or missing ring gear teeth (5)
NOTE:Do not attempt to repair the welded areas that retain the ring gear to the automatic transmission flex plate. Install a NEW automatic transmission flex plate.
- If any of the above conditions exist, replace the automatic transmission flex plate.
Clean the balancer chain (1) in solvent.
- Dry the balancer chain with compressed air.
- Inspect the balancer chain for signs of excessive wear, chipping, or seizure of the balancer chain links.
- Replace the balancer chain if damaged.
Clean the balancer shaft driven sprocket (1) in solvent.
- Dry the balancer shaft driven sprocket with compressed air.
- Inspect the balancer shaft driven sprocket for the following conditions:
- Grooves, excessive wear, chipping of the gear or missing gear teeth (2)
- Damage or wear to the bolt hole (3)
- If any of the above conditions exist, replace the balancer shaft driven sprocket.
Clean the balancer chain tensioner (1) in solvent.
- Clean out debris from the bolt holes.
- Dry the balancer chain tensioner with compressed air.
- Inspect the balancer chain tensioner for the following conditions:
- Damage or wear to the body (1)
- Cracking or wear on the chain guide (2)
- Wear exceeding 1.12 mm (0.045 in) of depth on the chain guide surface (2)
- Damage or wear to the plunger (3)
- Damage or wear to the bolt holes (4)
- If any of the above conditions exist, replace the balancer chain tensioner.
Clean the crankshaft balancer with soap and water.
- Dry the crankshaft balancer with compressed air.
- Inspect the crankshaft balancer for the following:
- Worn or damaged hub-to-crankshaft surface (1)
- Worn, grooved or damaged hub seal surface (2)
- Worn, chunking or deteriorated rubber between the hub and pulley (3)
- Damaged drive belt ribs (4)
- Damaged webs (5)
- If any of the above conditions exist, replace the crankshaft balancer.
Clean the crankshaft sprocket (1) in solvent.
- Dry the crankshaft sprocket with compressed air.
- Inspect the crankshaft sprocket for grooves, excessive wear, or chipping.
- Inspect the crankshaft sprocket for damage to the teeth (2)
- If any of the above conditions exist, replace the crankshaft sprocket.
Clean the timing chain (1) in solvent.
- Dry the timing chain with compressed air.
- Inspect the timing chain for signs of excessive wear, chipping, or seizure of the timing chain links.
- Replace the timing chain if damaged.
Clean out debris from the bolt holes.
- Clean the timing chain guide (1) in solvent.
- Dry the timing chain guide with compressed air.
- Damage, cracking or wear to the timing chain guide (1)
- Damage or wear to the bolt holes (2)
- Wear exceeding 1.12 mm (0.045 in) of depth on the chain guide surface (3)
- If any of the above conditions exist, replace the timing chain guide.
Remove any old thread sealant, gasket material or sealant from the cylinder head (1).
- Clean all cylinder head surfaces with non-corrosive cleaning solvent.
- Clean the oil galleries until all debris is removed.
- Remove any carbon deposits from the combustion chamber.
- Dry the cylinder head with compressed air.
- Inspect the cylinder head for the following:
- Cracks, damage or pitting in the combustion chambers
- Coolant leaks or damage to the deck face sealing surface
- Damage to any gasket surfaces
- Burnt or eroded areas in the combustion chamber
- Cracks in the exhaust ports and combustion chambers
- External cracks in the water passages
- Restrictions in the intake or exhaust passages
- Restrictions in the cooling system passages
- Rusted, damaged or leaking core plugs
- Inspect all the threaded holes for damage. Threads may be reconditioned with thread inserts.
- Inspect the sealing surfaces.
Inspect the cylinder head sealing surface for flatness. Use a straightedge (1). If the cylinder head sealing surface is uneven, replace the cylinder head. DO NOT machine the cylinder head.
- If the cylinder head is cracked or damaged, it must be replaced. No welding or patching of the cylinder head is allowed.
- NOTE:
Ensure proper use of room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealant. Use of Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) and Anaerobic Sealant
Remove any old thread sealant, gasket material or sealant using EN-28410 Gasket Remover.
- Clean out debris from the bolt holes.
- Clean the lower crankcase extension in solvent.
- Dry the lower crankcase extension with compressed air.
- Inspect the lower crankcase extension for the following conditions:
- Damage to the engine block lower structural extension upper mounting holes (1)
- Damage to the engine block lower structural extension sealing surface. (2)
- Damage to the mounting bosses (3)
- Gouges or damage to the engine block lower structural extension sealing surfaces (4)
- Damage to the engine oil cooler seal area. (5)
- Damage to the positive crankcase ventilation tube. (6)
- Damage to the balancer shaft bearing surfaces. (7)
- Damage to the oil pan mating surface. (8)
- Damage to the oil filter adapter gasket surface. (9)
- Damage to the engine block lower structural extension lower mounting holes (10)
- If any of the above conditions exist, replace the lower crankcase extension.
Clean out debris from the bolt holes.
- Clean the timing chain guide (1) in solvent.
- Dry the timing chain guide with compressed air.
- Damage, cracking or wear to the timing chain guide (1)
- Damage or wear to the bolt holes (2)
- Wear exceeding 1.12 mm (0.045 in) of depth on the chain guide surface (3)
- If any of the above conditions exist, replace the timing chain guide.
Clean the timing chain tensioner (1) in solvent.
- Clean out debris from the bolt holes and around the plunger.
- Dry the timing chain tensioner with compressed air.
- Inspect the timing chain tensioner for the following conditions:
- Damage or wear to the body (1)
- Damage or wear to the bolt holes (2)
- Damage or wear to the plunger (3)
- If any of the above conditions exist, replace the timing chain tensioner.
- WARNING:
Clean the connecting rods (1) in solvent and dry with compressed air.
- Inspect the connecting rod for the following:
- Signs of being twisted, bent, nicked or cracked
- Scratches or abrasion on the connecting rod bearing seating surfaces
- If the connecting rod bores (2) contain minor scratches or abrasions, clean the bores in a circular direction with a light emery paper. Do NOT scrape the rod or rod cap.
- If the beam of the rod is scratched or has other damage replace the connecting rod.
- WARNING:
Clean the piston (1) in solvent and dry with compressed air. Do NOT wire brush any parts of the piston.
- Clean the piston ring grooves.
- Inspect the piston on the following:
- Cracked ring lands, skirts or pin bosses
- Ring grooves for nicks
- Eroded areas on the top of the piston (1)
- Scuffed or damaged skirts (2)
- Worn piston pin bores (3)
- If there is any excessive wear, replace the piston.
- Measure the clearance between the piston pin and the piston bore. Use the following procedure:
A crankshaft balancer hub seal surface (2) with excessive scoring, grooves, rust or other damage must be replaced.
