Cleaning and Inspection Procedure - Required: Notes

    WARNING:

    Refer to Safety Glasses Warning

    Clean the camshaft position actuator (1) with cleaning solvent.

  2. Remove any dirt, debris, or restrictions within the oil passages (6).
  3. Dry the camshaft position actuator with compressed air.
  4. Insert a tie strap through the center of the camshaft position actuator and around the gear teeth to keep the components aligned.
  5. Inspect the camshaft position actuator for the following conditions:
    1. A broken spring (2)
    2. Damage to the timing sprocket teeth (3)
    3. Damage to the reluctor wheel (4)
    4. Damage to the center bore (5)
    5. Damage to the oil passages (6)
  6. If any of the above conditions exist, replace the camshaft position actuator.

    NOTE:
    • The inspection procedure is provided for diagnostic purposes only.
    • Do not use the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve bolt again. Install a NEW valve during assembly.

    Inspect the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve bolt for the following conditions:

    1. Dirt, debris, restrictions or damage within the oil passages (1)
    2. Damaged threads (2)

      If the threads of the valve are damaged, also inspect the threads in the front of the camshaft for damage.

    3. Dirt, debris, restrictions or damage within the oil inlet (3)

      If debris is detected, the engine assembly should be inspected to determine the source of contamination.

    NOTE:

    Do not soak or submerge the fuel pump in solvent.

    Clean the fuel pump (2) and valve lifter follower (5).

  9. Dry the fuel pump and valve lifter follower with compressed air.
  10. Inspect the fuel pump for the following conditions:
    1. Damage to the connection ports (1)
    2. Damage to the electrical connector (2)
    3. Damage to the sealing surface (3)
    4. Damage to or a bent or binding plunger (7)
    5. Damage to the mounting holes (8)
  11. Inspect the valve lifter follower for the following conditions:
    1. A scored or worn fuel pump contact surface (4)
    2. A severely scuffed or worn body (5)
    3. Binding or roughness of the roller (6)
  12. If any of the above conditions exist, replace the fuel pump and/or the valve lifter follower.

    Clean the automatic transmission flex plate (1) in solvent.

  14. Dry the automatic transmission flex plate with compressed air.
  15. Inspect the automatic transmission flex plate for the following conditions:
    1. Stress cracks around the automatic transmission flex plate-to-torque converter mounting bolt hole locations (1) and/or automatic transmission flex plate-to-crankshaft (2, 4)
    2. NOTE:

      Do not attempt to repair the welded areas that retain the ring gear to the automatic transmission flex plate. Install a NEW automatic transmission flex plate.

    3. Cracks at welded areas that retain the ring gear onto the automatic transmission flex plate (3)
    4. Damaged or missing ring gear teeth (5)
  16. If any of the above conditions exist, replace the automatic transmission flex plate.

    Clean the balancer chain (1) in solvent.

  18. Dry the balancer chain with compressed air.
  19. Inspect the balancer chain for signs of excessive wear, chipping, or seizure of the balancer chain links.
  20. Replace the balancer chain if damaged.

    Clean the balancer shaft driven sprocket (1) in solvent.

  22. Dry the balancer shaft driven sprocket with compressed air.
  23. Inspect the balancer shaft driven sprocket for the following conditions:
    1. Grooves, excessive wear, chipping of the gear or missing gear teeth (2)
    2. Damage or wear to the bolt hole (3)
  24. If any of the above conditions exist, replace the balancer shaft driven sprocket.

    Clean the balancer chain tensioner (1) in solvent.

  26. Clean out debris from the bolt holes.
  27. Dry the balancer chain tensioner with compressed air.
  28. Inspect the balancer chain tensioner for the following conditions:
    1. Damage or wear to the body (1)
    2. Cracking or wear on the chain guide (2)
    3. Wear exceeding 1.12 mm (0.045 in) of depth on the chain guide surface (2)
    4. Damage or wear to the plunger (3)
    5. Damage or wear to the bolt holes (4)
  29. If any of the above conditions exist, replace the balancer chain tensioner.

    Clean the crankshaft balancer with soap and water.

  31. Dry the crankshaft balancer with compressed air.
  32. NOTE:

    A crankshaft balancer hub seal surface (2) with excessive scoring, grooves, rust or other damage must be replaced.

  33. Inspect the crankshaft balancer for the following:
    1. Worn or damaged hub-to-crankshaft surface (1)
    2. Worn, grooved or damaged hub seal surface (2)
    3. Worn, chunking or deteriorated rubber between the hub and pulley (3)
    4. Damaged drive belt ribs (4)
    5. Damaged webs (5)
  34. If any of the above conditions exist, replace the crankshaft balancer.

    Clean the crankshaft sprocket (1) in solvent.

  36. Dry the crankshaft sprocket with compressed air.
  37. Inspect the crankshaft sprocket for grooves, excessive wear, or chipping.
  38. Inspect the crankshaft sprocket for damage to the teeth (2)
  39. If any of the above conditions exist, replace the crankshaft sprocket.

    Clean the timing chain (1) in solvent.

  41. Dry the timing chain with compressed air.
  42. Inspect the timing chain for signs of excessive wear, chipping, or seizure of the timing chain links.
  43. Replace the timing chain if damaged.

    Clean out debris from the bolt holes.

  45. Clean the timing chain guide (1) in solvent.
  46. Dry the timing chain guide with compressed air.
    1. Damage, cracking or wear to the timing chain guide (1)
    2. Damage or wear to the bolt holes (2)
    3. Wear exceeding 1.12 mm (0.045 in) of depth on the chain guide surface (3)
  47. If any of the above conditions exist, replace the timing chain guide.

    Remove any old thread sealant, gasket material or sealant from the cylinder head (1).

  49. Clean all cylinder head surfaces with non-corrosive cleaning solvent.
  50. Clean the oil galleries until all debris is removed.
  51. Remove any carbon deposits from the combustion chamber.
  52. Dry the cylinder head with compressed air.
  53. Inspect the cylinder head for the following:
    1. Cracks, damage or pitting in the combustion chambers
    2. Coolant leaks or damage to the deck face sealing surface
    3. Damage to any gasket surfaces
    4. Burnt or eroded areas in the combustion chamber
    5. Cracks in the exhaust ports and combustion chambers
    6. External cracks in the water passages
    7. Restrictions in the intake or exhaust passages
    8. Restrictions in the cooling system passages
    9. Rusted, damaged or leaking core plugs
    10. Inspect all the threaded holes for damage. Threads may be reconditioned with thread inserts.
    11. Inspect the sealing surfaces.

      Inspect the cylinder head sealing surface for flatness. Use a straightedge (1). If the cylinder head sealing surface is uneven, replace the cylinder head. DO NOT machine the cylinder head.

  54. If the cylinder head is cracked or damaged, it must be replaced. No welding or patching of the cylinder head is allowed.

    NOTE:

    Ensure proper use of room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealant. Use of Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) and Anaerobic Sealant

    Remove any old thread sealant, gasket material or sealant using EN-28410  Gasket Remover.

  56. Clean out debris from the bolt holes.
  57. Clean the lower crankcase extension in solvent.
  58. Dry the lower crankcase extension with compressed air.
  59. Inspect the lower crankcase extension for the following conditions:
    1. Damage to the engine block lower structural extension upper mounting holes (1)
    2. Damage to the engine block lower structural extension sealing surface. (2)
    3. Damage to the mounting bosses (3)
    4. Gouges or damage to the engine block lower structural extension sealing surfaces (4)
    5. Damage to the engine oil cooler seal area. (5)
    6. Damage to the positive crankcase ventilation tube. (6)
    7. Damage to the balancer shaft bearing surfaces. (7)
    8. Damage to the oil pan mating surface. (8)
    9. Damage to the oil filter adapter gasket surface. (9)
    10. Damage to the engine block lower structural extension lower mounting holes (10)
  60. If any of the above conditions exist, replace the lower crankcase extension.

    Clean out debris from the bolt holes.

  62. Clean the timing chain guide (1) in solvent.
  63. Dry the timing chain guide with compressed air.
    1. Damage, cracking or wear to the timing chain guide (1)
    2. Damage or wear to the bolt holes (2)
    3. Wear exceeding 1.12 mm (0.045 in) of depth on the chain guide surface (3)
  64. If any of the above conditions exist, replace the timing chain guide.

    Clean the timing chain tensioner (1) in solvent.

  66. Clean out debris from the bolt holes and around the plunger.
  67. Dry the timing chain tensioner with compressed air.
  68. Inspect the timing chain tensioner for the following conditions:
    1. Damage or wear to the body (1)
    2. Damage or wear to the bolt holes (2)
    3. Damage or wear to the plunger (3)
  69. If any of the above conditions exist, replace the timing chain tensioner.

    Clean the connecting rods (1) in solvent and dry with compressed air.

  71. Inspect the connecting rod for the following:
    1. Signs of being twisted, bent, nicked or cracked
    2. Scratches or abrasion on the connecting rod bearing seating surfaces
  72. If the connecting rod bores (2) contain minor scratches or abrasions, clean the bores in a circular direction with a light emery paper. Do NOT scrape the rod or rod cap.
  73. If the beam of the rod is scratched or has other damage replace the connecting rod.

    Clean the piston (1) in solvent and dry with compressed air. Do NOT wire brush any parts of the piston.

  75. Clean the piston ring grooves.
  76. Inspect the piston on the following:
    1. Cracked ring lands, skirts or pin bosses
    2. Ring grooves for nicks
    3. Eroded areas on the top of the piston (1)
    4. Scuffed or damaged skirts (2)
    5. Worn piston pin bores (3)
  77. If there is any excessive wear, replace the piston.
  78. Measure the clearance between the piston pin and the piston bore. Use the following procedure:
