Removal Procedure
- EngineRemove - Engine Replacement (AWD)
Camshaft Carrier Bolt (2) - Remove
- Camshaft Cover Core Hole Plug (1) - Remove [2x]
- NOTE:
The timing pin (3) is installed into the flexplate for engine timing procedures, it can be damaged if torque is applied to the flexplate with the timing pin engaged. The pin must be placed in the retracted position before torque is applied to the flexplate.
Set the timing pin feature in the retracted position from the engaged position by pulling back and twisting the handle (1) 90 degrees.
- Install the EN-52476 Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool (2) through the starter mounting hole.
- Install the slide (4) of the EN-52476 Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool.
- NOTE:
The EN-52462-A Camshaft Alignment Tool locking pins fit tightly into the camshafts. Rotate the engine in both directions in small increments using the crankshaft balancer bolt until the locking pins of the EN-52462-A Camshaft Alignment Tool (1) drop into the slots in the camshafts. Momentarily retract the timing pin of the EN-52476 Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool as necessary to seat the EN-52462-A Camshaft Alignment Tool locking pins. Ensure the EN-52476 Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool timing pin is re-engaged into the automatic transmission flex plate.
EN-52462-A Camshaft Alignment Tool (1) - Install
- Insert the EN-52462-A Camshaft Alignment Tool bolt (2) into the camshaft carrier and tighten to secure the tool to the camshaft carrier.
Crankshaft Balancer Bolt (1) - Remove and DISCARD
- Crankshaft Balancer (2) - Remove
Engine Front Cover Bolt (1) - Remove [10x]
- Engine Front Cover (2) - Remove and DISCARD
- The engine block sealing surface must be cleaned with low VOC brake clean, allow it to sit on the surface for several minutes to loosen the RTV. Use a plastic putty knife or plastic scraper to remove the old RTV. Once the RTV is removed, spray a second application of low VOC brake cleaner to the sealing surface on the engine block, wipe off with a clean lint free cloth. Wipe the new cover with low VOC brake clean on the sealing surface / bead path, then wipe it off with a clean lint free cloth.
- Clean out the engine front cover locating pin bores with low VOC brake clean and then dry them out with shop air.
- NOTE:

Remove the slide (4) of the EN-52476 Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool (2) and install the timing pin (3) by releasing the handle (1).
Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]
- Camshaft Position Actuator Magnet (2) - Remove
- Camshaft Position Actuator Magnet Gasket (3) - Remove and DISCARD
Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]
- Camshaft Position Actuator Magnet (2) - Remove
- Camshaft Position Actuator Magnet Gasket (3) - Remove and DISCARD
Timing Chain Upper Cover Bolt (1) - Remove [9x]
- Timing Chain Upper Cover Bolt (2) - Remove
- Timing Chain Upper Cover (3) - Remove
- Timing Belt Front Upper Cover Seal (4) - Remove and DISCARD
Rotate both handles (4) of the EN-52462-A Camshaft Alignment Tool towards the rear of the engine.
- EN-52461-200 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool 2.7L Adapter (2) - Install [2x]
- Install and tighten the two EN-52461-200 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool 2.7L Adapter bolts (3) enough to secure the EN-52461-200 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool 2.7L Adapter (2) to the cylinder head.
EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (1) @ EN-52461-200 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool 2.7L Adapter (2) - Install
- Install and tighten the 2 EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolts (3).
Engage the tangs of the EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (1) to the intake and the exhaust camshaft position actuator slots.
- Tighten the EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolts (2) to lock the actuators in place.
Loosen the camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolts (1).
- The camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolt (1) is loosened or removed.
- The EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolts (2, 4) are loosened.
- Loosen the EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolt (2) to un-lock the intake actuator.
- Loosen the EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolt (4) to un-lock the exhaust actuator.
Remove timing chain tension from the camshaft position actuators and tighten the lower portion of the timing chain around the crankshaft sprocket.
- Use a wrench to turn the EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (1) counter-clockwise 6 N.m 53 lb in, then hold.
- Tighten the EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolt (1) to lock the intake actuator securely in place.
- Remove the wrench from EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (1).
- Use a wrench to turn the EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (4) clockwise 6 N.m 53 lb in, then hold.
- Tighten the EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolt (2) to lock the exhaust actuator securely in place.
- Remove the wrench from EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (4).
Relieve timing chain tension from the camshaft position actuators.
- The camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolt is loosened or removed.
- The EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolts (2, 3) are loosened.
- Loosen the EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolt (2) to release the intake actuator.
- Loosen the EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolt (3) to release the exhaust actuator.
- NOTE:
Only remove the camshaft position actuator valve bolts that are defective, or as necessary to remove their corresponding actuators.
Remove the camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolts (1) as necessary and DISCARD.
- NOTE:
Hold the bottom of the actuator while disengaging the torque reaction tool to prevent the actuator from dropping.
Slide the barrel (2) of the torque reaction tool away from the actuators.
- Remove the exhaust camshaft position actuator (3) and the intake camshaft position actuator (4) as necessary.
NOTE:Ensure the EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolt (2) is tightened enough that EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (1) is firmly clamped and will not slip.
NOTE:Ensure the EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolt (3) is tightened enough that EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (4) is firmly clamped and will not slip.
NOTE:Pressure must be applied towards the engine on the EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool at points (1, 4) prior to and during any time the following two conditions are simultaneously met.
Timing Chain Tensioner Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]
- Timing Chain Tensioner (2) - Remove
- Timing Chain Tensioner Gasket (3) - Remove and DISCARD
- Timing Chain Guide Bolt (4) - Remove
- Timing Chain Guide (5) - Remove
Crankshaft Sprocket (3) - Remove
- Timing Chain Guide Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]
- Timing Chain Guide (2) - Remove
- Timing Chain (4) - Remove
Loosen the two bolts (3) of EN-52461-200 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool 2.7L Adapter.
- Remove EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (1).
Remove the two EN-52461-200 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool 2.7L Adapter bolts (3).
- EN-52461-200 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool 2.7L Adapter - Remove [2x]
Camshaft Cover Stud (1) - Remove
- Camshaft Cover Stud (2) - Remove [17x]
- Camshaft Cover Bolt (3) - Remove [4x]
- Camshaft Carrier (4) - Remove
- Camshaft Cover Gasket (5) - Remove and DISCARD
- CAUTION:
This vehicle is equipped with torque-to-yield or single use fasteners. Install a NEW torque-to-yield or single use fastener when installing this component. Failure to replace the torque-to-yield or single use fastener could cause damage to the vehicle or component.
CAUTION:After removal, place the cylinder head on 2 wood blocks in order to prevent damage to the sealing surfaces.
Cylinder Head Bolt (6) - Remove and DISCARD [2x]
- Cylinder Head Bolt (5) - Remove and DISCARD [3x]
- Cylinder Head Bolt (4) - Remove and DISCARD [3x]
- Cylinder Head Bolt (3) - Remove and DISCARD [10x]
- Cylinder Head (2) - Remove
- Cylinder Head Gasket (1) - Remove and DISCARD
Lower Oil Pan Bolt (1) - Remove [17x]
- Locate the four threaded insert jack screw locations on the lower oil pan. Use four lower oil pan bolts in these locations, and tighten the bolts by hand 1 to 2 turns each in a uniform manner, rotating between bolts until the oil pan has full separation from the lower crankcase extension.
- Oil Pan (2) - Remove and DISCARD
Oil Pump Suction Pipe Bolt (1) - Remove
- Oil Pump Suction Pipe (2) - Remove
- Oil Pump Suction Pipe Gasket (3) - Remove and DISCARD
Electrical Connector (1) - Disconnect
Engage the EN-52476 Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool (1) slide through the flex plate teeth.
Automatic Transmission Flex Plate Bolt (1) - Remove and DISCARD [8x]
- Automatic Transmission Flex Plate (2) - Remove
Crankshaft Position Sensor Reluctor Ring (1) - Remove
Crankshaft Position Sensor Bolt (1) - Remove
- Crankshaft Position Sensor (2) - Remove
Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Housing Bolt (1) - Remove [14x]
- Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Housing (2) - Remove and DISCARD
- The engine block sealing surface must be cleaned with low VOC brake clean, allow it to sit on the surface for several minutes to loosen the RTV. Use a plastic putty knife or plastic scraper to remove the old RTV. Once the RTV is removed, spray a second application of low VOC brake cleaner to the sealing surface on the engine block, wipe off with a clean lint free cloth. Wipe the new cover with low VOC brake clean on the sealing surface / bead path, then wipe it off with a clean lint free cloth.
- Clean out the crankshaft rear oil seal housing locating pin bore with low VOC brake clean and dry out with shop air.
Compress the balancer chain tensioner (1).
- EN-52593 Chain Tensioner Retention Pin (2) - Install
Balancer Chain Tensioner Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]
- Balancer Chain Tensioner (2) - Remove
Balancer Shaft Sprocket Bolt (1) - Remove and DISCARD
- Balancer Shaft Driven Sprocket (2) - Remove
- Balancer Chain (3) - Remove
- Remove the lower bolt on the balancer chain guide.
Lower Crankcase Extension Bolt (1) - Remove
- Lower Crankcase Extension Bolt (2) - Remove
- Lower Crankcase Extension Bolt (3) - Remove
- Lower Crankcase Extension Bolt (4) - Remove [8x]
- Lower Crankcase Extension Bolt (5) - Remove [3x]
- CAUTION:
Use a plastic pry tool when prying case halves apart to prevent damage to the Upper and Lower Crankcase surface. Do not continue to push the pry tool in the crankcase as the Upper and Lower Crankcase halves separate. This may damage the sealing surface.
Lower Crankcase Extension (1) - Remove
- Oil Pan High Pressure Port Seal (2) - Remove and DISCARD
- NOTE:
- Lay the lower bearings and the caps aside in the order they were removed.
- The connecting rod caps must remain with the original connecting rod. The caps must be oriented identical to original installation.
Connecting Rod Bolt (1) - Remove and DISCARD [8x]
- Connecting Rod Cap (2) - Remove [4x]
- Connecting Rod Bearing (3) - Remove and DISCARD [4x]
- NOTE:
Lay the piston and the upper bearings aside in the order they were removed.
Install EN-52525 Connecting Rod Guide Set into the connecting rod bolt holes.
- Using the EN-52525 Connecting Rod Guide Set, push the connecting rod and piston through the top of the cylinder. DO NOT scratch the crankshaft journal or cylinder wall and DO NOT damage the oil jets when removing the connecting rod and piston.
- Connecting Rod (1) - Remove [4x]
- Remove the EN-52525 Connecting Rod Guide Set from the connecting rod bolt holes.
- The shear surfaces of the connecting rod and the connecting rod bearing cap form a unique fit and must not be swapped or damaged. Do not lay down on the shear surfaces.
- Lay the lower bearings and the caps aside in the order they were removed.
- Connecting Rod Bearing (2) - Remove and DISCARD [4x]
Use pry points to remove the timing chain upper cover.
Ensure the camshaft carrier and cylinder head face are clean and free from RTV prior to installing the EN-52461-200 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool 2.7L Adapter.
Hold the camshaft position actuator firmly and squarely during camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolt removal/installation. Failure to do so may result in damage to the inside of the camshaft position actuator.
Pressure must be applied towards the engine on the EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool at points (3) prior to and during any time the following two conditions are simultaneously met.
The timing chain tensioner plunger is spring loaded, hold the plunger in place as the tensioner is removed to prevent losing components of the timing chain tensioner.
Do not pry on the oil pan to lower crankcase extension as the sealing surface will become damaged.
Wear safety glasses when using compressed air, as flying dirt particles may cause eye injury.
