Cleaning and Inspection Procedure - Conditional

NOTE:

The following cleaning and inspection and/or overhaul steps are ONLY to be performed as determined necessary based on the condition of the part being removed with the intention of reinstallation. The labor time to perform any of these steps is not included in the base labor time and if required would need to be documented and submitted as Other Labor Hours for warranty claim reimbursement. A description of the repairs performed must be documented in the technician correction comments.

    Clean the camshaft housing (1) in solvent.

  2. Dry the camshaft housing with compressed air.
  3. Inspect the camshaft housing for dents or damage to the exterior. A dented or damaged camshaft housing may:
    1. Leak engine oil
    2. Affect crankcase ventilation
    3. Interfere with the camshafts
  4. Inspect the exterior of the camshaft housing for the following conditions:
    1. Damage to the component mounting holes (2)
    2. Damage to the bolt holes (3)
    3. Damage to the sealing surfaces (4)
    4. NOTE:

      Only inspect the bearing bores if the camshafts have been removed.

    5. Grooves, cracks, scratches and any other damage to the bearing bores (5)

    Inspect the interior of the camshaft housing (1) for the following conditions:

    1. Cracks, casting imperfections or damage
    2. Cracks or damage to the sealing surfaces (3)
    3. NOTE:

      Only inspect the bearing bores if the camshafts have been removed.

    4. Grooves, cracks, scratches and any other damage to the bearing bores (2)
  6. If any of the above conditions exist, replace the camshaft housing.

    NOTE:

    Do not soak or submerge the camshaft position actuator magnet in solvent.

    Clean the camshaft position actuator magnet electrical connector and mounting surface of dirt, debris or contamination.

  8. Dry the camshaft position actuator magnet with compressed air.
  9. Inspect the camshaft position actuator magnet for the following conditions:
    1. Damage to the sealing surface (1)
    2. Damage to the electrical connector (2)
    3. Damage to the mounting holes (3)
  10. Depress the valve (4) into the housing. The valve should move freely with no binding or sticking and minimal resistance inward.
  11. If any of the above conditions exist, replace the camshaft position actuator magnet.

    CAUTION:

    If a turbocharger has failed, clean any turbocharger debris or excessive oil from the charge air cooler system before installing the new turbocharger. Failure to clean debris from the charge air cooler system will cause severe turbocharger and engine damage upon startup.

    Completely inspect the compressor air intake turbocharger and all other engine components that may cause similar conditions before replacing the turbocharger. Symptoms - Engine Mechanical

  13. Clean all mating surfaces.
  14. Inspect all threaded holes for damage.
  15. Inspect the compressor and turbine blades for bent or broken conditions, and foreign material. PCV fluids and combustion product buildup are common and not a sign of failure.
  16. Using a straightedge and a feeler gauge, measure the cylinder head mating surface for warpage. A mating surface with warpage in excess of 0.2 mm (0.008 in) may cause an exhaust leak and may affect diagnostics and system performance.
  17. If any of the above conditions exist, replace the compressor air intake turbocharger.
  18. Check the turbocharger oil feed pipe for restrictions.
  19. Check the turbocharger coolant feed and return pipe for restrictions.
  20. If any of the above conditions exist, replace the turbocharger oil feed pipe, turbocharger coolant feed pipe, or turbocharger return pipe.

    Clean the engine oil cooler coolant passages and connection ports of dirt, debris or blockage.

  22. Clean the engine oil cooler (1) in solvent.
  23. Dry the engine oil cooler with compressed air.
  24. Inspect the engine oil cooler for the following conditions:
    1. Damage to the mounting holes (2)
    2. Damage to the coolant passages (3)
  25. If any of the above conditions exist, replace the engine oil cooler.

    Clean the oil pump suction pipe with solvent.

  27. Dry the oil pump suction pipe with compressed air.
  28. Inspect the oil pump suction pipe for the following conditions:
    1. Damage to the oil pump mounting boss (1) for possible leakage paths.
    2. Damage to the exterior case (2) for cracks, imperfections or damage.
    3. Damage to the intake port (3) for blockage, foreign material, cracks or damage.
    4. Damage to the mounting bolt hole (4) for cracks, imperfections or damage.
  29. If any of the above conditions exist, replace the oil pump suction pipe.

    NOTE:

    Ensure proper use of room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealant. Use of Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) and Anaerobic Sealant

    Remove any old thread sealant, gasket material or sealant using EN-28410  Gasket Remover.

  31. Clean out debris from the bolt holes.
  32. Clean the lower crankcase extension in solvent.
  33. Dry the lower crankcase extension with compressed air.
  34. Inspect the lower crankcase extension for the following conditions:
    1. Damage to the lower crankcase extension upper mounting holes (1)
    2. Damage to the lower crankcase extension sealing surface (2)
    3. Damage to the mounting bosses (3)
    4. Gouges or damage to the lower crankcase extension to transmission sealing surfaces (4)
    5. Damage to the positive crankcase ventilation tube (5)
    6. Damage to the lower crankcase extension lower mounting holes (6)
    7. Damage to the oil pan mating surface (7)
    8. Damage to the balancer shaft bearing surfaces (8)
    9. Damage to the engine oil cooler seal area (9)
    10. Damage to the oil level indicator tube surface (10)
  35. If any of the above conditions exist, replace the lower crankcase extension.
