Removal Procedure

NOTE:

Vehicle alignment is not required if the cradle is being lowered or dropped to perform another procedure. This vehicle is equipped with a cradle to body aligning feature: cradle to body through holes or self-aligning pins that are part of the cradle or body. Only align if replacing the cradle with a NEW part and transferring components.

  1. Remove the transmission. Transmission Replacement (All Wheel Drive) , or Transmission Replacement (Rear Wheel Drive)
  2. Lower the drivetrain and front suspension frame assembly. Drivetrain and Front Suspension Cradle Removal and Installation (AWD) , or Drivetrain and Front Suspension Cradle Removal and Installation (RWD)
  3. Drain the Front Differential Carrierfluid. FRONT AXLE LUBRICANT REPLACEMENT

    Retainer (1) - Unclip

    Water Pump Cover Bolt (1) - Remove [3x]

  6. Water Pump Cover (2) - Remove

    Engine Mount Bracket Bolt (1) - Remove and DISCARD [4x]

    Engine Mount Bracket (1) - Remove

    Retainer (1) - Unclip [3x]

  10. Engine Wiring Harness (2) - Reposition away

    Engine Mount Bracket Bolt (1) - Remove and DISCARD [4x]

  12. Engine Mount Bracket (2) - Remove

    Have an assistant apply the brakes.

  14. CAUTION:

    DO NOT use air tools to remove the wheel drive shaft nut. Damage to the wheel drive shaft threads could occur. Use hand tools only.

  15. Front Wheel Drive Shaft Nut (1) - Remove and DISCARD

    Install the DT-45859  Axle Remover (1) to the front wheel hub and secure with 3 wheel nuts (2) hand tightened.

  17. Using the DT-45859  Axle Remover (1), release the front wheel drive half shaft from the front wheel hub.
  18. Remove the 3 wheel nuts (2) and the DT-45859  Axle Remover (1) from the front wheel hub.

    Install the DT-45341  Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Removal Tool (1), GE-47829  Slide Hammer Extension (3) and GE-02619-A  Slide Hammer w/Adapter (4) to the front wheel drive half shaft (2).

  20. Release the front wheel drive half shaft (2) from the front wheel drive intermediate shaft.
  21. Remove the GE-02619-A  Slide Hammer w/Adapter (4), GE-47829  Slide Hammer Extension (3) and DT-45341  Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Removal Tool (1) from the front wheel drive half shaft (2).

    Front Wheel Drive Half Shaft (1) - Remove

    Front Wheel Drive Intermediate Shaft Retaining Ring (1) - Remove and DISCARD

    Front Wheel Drive Intermediate Shaft Bracket Bolt (2) - Remove [3x]

  26. NOTE:

    Insert suitable flat edge tool into gaps between bracket and mounting surface and apply alternate and even pressure to gently rock bracket out of mating recess.

  27. Front Wheel Drive Intermediate Shaft Bracket (1) - Remove
  28. NOTE:

    The front wheel drive intermediate shaft bracket bearing is not serviced separately. If the bearing is worn or damaged, replace the front wheel drive intermediate shaft bracket assembly.

  29. Thoroughly clean and inspect the front wheel drive intermediate shaft bracket for damage.
  30. If damaged, replace the front wheel drive intermediate shaft bracket.

    Attach the DT - 44467  Output Shaft Assembly Remover and Installer (1) to the shaft.

  32. Attach the J-6125-1B  Slide Hammer with Adapter (2) to the DT-44467  Output Shaft Assembly Remover and Installer (1).
  33. Use the tools to remove the Front Wheel Drive Intermediate Shaft (3) from the front differential carrier.
  34. Front Wheel Drive Intermediate Shaft (3) - Remove
  35. Front Wheel Drive Intermediate Shaft Retaining Ring (4) - Remove and DISCARD

    Have an assistant apply the brakes.

  37. CAUTION:

    DO NOT use air tools to remove the wheel drive shaft nut. Damage to the wheel drive shaft threads could occur. Use hand tools only.

  38. Front Wheel Drive Shaft Nut (1) - Remove and DISCARD

    Install the DT-45859  Axle Remover (1) to the front wheel hub and secure with 3 wheel nuts (2) hand tightened.

  40. Using the DT-45859  Axle Remover (1), release the front wheel drive half shaft from the front wheel hub.
  41. Remove the 3 wheel nuts (2) and the DT-45859  Axle Remover (1) from the front wheel hub.

    Install the DT-45341  Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Removal Tool (1), GE-47829  Slide Hammer Extension (3) and GE-02619-A  Slide Hammer w/Adapter (4) to the front wheel drive half shaft (2).

  43. Release the front wheel drive half shaft (2) from the front differential carrier.
  44. Remove the GE-02619-A  Slide Hammer w/Adapter (4), GE-47829  Slide Hammer Extension (3) and DT-45341  Rear Wheel Drive Shaft Removal Tool (1) from the front wheel drive half shaft (2).

    Partially remove the front wheel drive half shaft (1) from the front differential carrier.

  46. CAUTION:

    DT-51504 must be installed into the differential output shaft seal prior to removing and installing the wheel drive shaft. Failure to install the DT-51504 as indicated may cause the splines of the wheel drive shaft to damage the differential output seal

  47. Install the DT-51504  Seal Protector (2) into the front axle shaft seal.

    Front Wheel Drive Half Shaft (1) - Remove

    Retaining Ring (2) @ Front Wheel Drive Half Shaft (1) - Remove and DISCARD

    Front Axle Vent Hose (1) - Remove

  51. Using the engine support fixture, carefully lower the engine assembly enough to allow the front differential carrier assembly to be removed through the right wheel opening.

    Position a transmission jack beneath the front differential carrier.

  53. Firmly secure the front differential carrier to the transmission jack.

    NOTE:

    The timing pin (3) is installed into the flexplate for engine timing procedures, it can be damaged if torque is applied to the flexplate with the timing pin engaged. The pin must be placed in the retracted position before torque is applied to the flexplate.

    Install the EN-52476  Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool (1) through the starter mounting hole.

    Automatic Transmission Flex Plate Bolt (1) - Remove and DISCARD [8x]

    Crankshaft Position Sensor Reluctor Ring (1) - Remove

    Crankshaft Position Sensor Bracket Bolt (1) - Remove

    Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Housing Bolt (1) - Remove [14x]

  67. Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Housing (2) - Remove and DISCARD
  68. Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Housing Locating Pin (3) - Remove [2x]
  69. Clean out the crankshaft rear oil seal housing pin bores with low VOC brake clean and dry with shop air.

    Compress the balancer chain tensioner (1).

    Balancer Chain Tensioner Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]

    Electrical Connector (1) - Disconnect

    Lower Oil Pan Bolt (1) - Remove [17x]

  82. NOTE:

    Do not pry on the oil pan to lower crankcase extension as the sealing surface will become damaged.

  83. Locate the four threaded insert jack screw locations on the lower oil pan. Use four lower oil pan bolts in these locations, and tighten the bolts by hand 1 to 2 turns each in a uniform manner, rotating between bolts until the oil pan has full separation from the lower crankcase extension.
  84. Oil Pan (2) - Remove and DISCARD

    Oil Pump Suction Pipe Bolt (1) - Remove

  86. Oil Pump Suction Pipe (2) - Remove
  87. Oil Pump Suction Pipe Gasket (3) - Remove and DISCARD

    Electrical Connector (1) - Disconnect

    Lower Crankcase Extension Bolt (1) - Remove

  94. Lower Crankcase Extension Bolt (2) - Remove

    CAUTION:

    Use a plastic pry tool when prying case halves apart to prevent damage to the Upper and Lower Crankcase surface. Do not continue to push the pry tool in the crankcase as the Upper and Lower Crankcase halves separate. This may damage the sealing surface.
