  3. GM5333990Courtesy of GENERAL MOTORS COMPANY

Inspect the timing chain upper cover (4) for the dents or damage to the exterior. A dented or damaged timing chain upper cover may:

    • Leak engine oil
    • Affect crankcase ventilation
    • Interfere with the camshafts actuators
    • Interfere with the camshaft position actuator magnet sealing
    • Allow water or condensation to enter the engine
    • CAUTION:

Tamper Proof Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) Valve - Fresh Air: Do not attempt to remove the PCV valve by prying or twisting the PCV valve to separate the valve from the mating cover or component. Prying or twisting the PCV valve will result in fracture of one or more valve retention tabs which can fall into the engine resulting in internal engine damage. Remove the PCV valve mating cover or component from the engine before attempting to remove the PCV valve.

    • Inspect the positive crankshaft ventilation valve (1) and seal (2 and 3). If removed replace with NEW.
  4. Inspect the exterior of the timing chain upper cover (4) for the following conditions:
    • Damage to the camshaft position actuator magnet holes
    • Damage to the timing chain upper cover bolt holes
    • Inspect the timing chain upper cover for cracks, or damage.
    • Inspect the timing chain upper cover for cracks or damage.
    • Inspect all oil filler cap for cracks or damage.
