Installation Procedure

    Exhaust Camshaft (2) - Install

  2. Ensure the 5 engine front cover locating pins (5) are in place.

    Camshaft Bearing Front Cap (4) - Install

  4. Camshaft Bearing Lower Cap (3) - Install
  5. Camshaft Bearing Lower Cap (2) - Install
  6. CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution .

  7. Camshaft Bearing Cap Bolt (1) - Install and tighten [25x] - Fastener Specifications

    EN-52462 - A  Camshaft Tool (1) - Install

    Can use Low VOC Brake Cleaner to ensure the surface areas are clean. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

    NOTE:

    The RTV bead is applied from arrow tip to arrow tip across the sealing surface on each side of the engine.

    NOTE:

    The camshaft carrier must be installed, and the excess RTV squeezed from under the camshaft cover gasket must be wiped off within 8 minutes of the RTV sealant application.

    Apply a 3 mm wide RTV bead 2.5 mm back from the front edge of the cylinder head as shown. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

    Camshaft Cover Gasket (1) - Install NEW

    Camshaft Cover (1) - Install

    NOTE:

    Ensure the EN-52462 - A  Camshaft Tool is installed and camshafts are in the time position.

  14. Rock the camshaft carrier back and fourth to seat the camshaft carrier cover onto the two dowels in the cylinder head sealing surface.

    Camshaft Cover Bolt (3) - Install and hand tighten [5x]

  17. Camshaft Cover Stud (2) - Install and hand tighten [16x]
  18. Camshaft Cover Stud (1) - Install and hand tighten
  19. CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution .

  20. Tighten the camshaft carrier fasteners in sequence. Fastener Specifications
  21. Reinstall the 2 EN-52461-200  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool 2.7L Adapters, and the EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool.

    Positive Crankcase Ventilation Tube (1) - Install NEW

    Engine Wiring Harness Bracket (2) - Install

    NOTE:
    • The camshaft MUST be at the base circle position before the fuel pump is installed.
    • At the base circle position, the EN-52443  High Pressure Fuel Pump Alignment Tool will sit flush with the cylinder head.

    Install the EN-52443  High Pressure Fuel Pump Alignment Tool and turn the crankshaft until the camshaft lobe is at the base circle position.

  28. Remove the EN-52443  High Pressure Fuel Pump Alignment Tool.
  29. Lubricate the valve lifter follower (4) with clean engine oil.
  30. Valve Lifter Follower (4) - Install
  31. Fuel Pump Seal (3) - Install NEW
  32. Fuel Pump (2) - Install
  33. CAUTION:

    Alternately hand-tighten the fuel pump bolts one turn at a time until the pump is fully seated. Trying to draw down the pump without even side-to-side tightening may result in pump plunger damage.

  34. Fuel Pump Stud (1) - Install and tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications
  35. Electrical Connector @ Fuel Pump - Connect

    WARNING:

    The noise cancelling foam component MUST be replaced if it has been exposed to engine fluids. Failure to replace the noise cancelling foam component that has been exposed to engine fluids may result in an engine fire resulting in catastrophic engine damage, and possible injury or death.

    Fuel Pump Insulator (1) - Install

    Fuel Feed Intermediate Pipe (2) - Install NEW

  41. Fuel Injection Fuel Feed Pipe Bracket Bolt (1) - Install and tighten - Fastener Specifications

    Nut @ Fuel Feed Intermediate Pipe (1) - Install and hand tighten [2x]

    Install the camshaft position exhaust actuator (3).

  45. Slide the barrel of the torque reaction tool (2) into the camshaft position exhaust actuator (3) and hold.
  46. NOTE:

    Ensure the torque reaction tool bolt (1) is tight enough that the barrel (2) will not slip.

  47. Tighten the bolt (1) to hold the camshaft position exhaust actuator (3) in place.
  48. Install the camshaft position intake actuator (4).
  49. Slide the barrel of the torque reaction tool (2) into the camshaft position intake actuator (4) and hold.
  50. NOTE:

    Ensure the torque reaction tool bolt (1) is tight enough that the barrel (2) will not slip.

  51. Tighten the bolt (1) to hold the camshaft position intake actuator (4) in place.

    NOTE:

    Lubricate under the washer surface.

    Lubricate the NEW camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolts (1) with clean engine oil where indicated. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

    Install and hand tighten the NEW camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolts (1).

    CAUTION:

    Hold the camshaft position actuator firmly and squarely during camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolt removal/installation. Failure to do so may result in damage to the inside of the camshaft position actuator.

    NOTE:

    Pressure must be applied towards the engine on the EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool at points (3) prior to and during any time the following two conditions are simultaneously met.

    • The camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolt is loosened or removed.
    • The EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolts (2, 3) are loosened.

    Shift the slack in the timing chain to be taken up by the timing chain tensioner.

    1. Loosen the EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolt (2).
    2. Use a wrench to turn the EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (1) counter-clockwise 6 N.m (53 lb in), then hold.
    3. Tighten the EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolt (2) to lock the camshaft position intake actuator securely in place.
    4. Remove the wrench from EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (1).
    5. Loosen the EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolt (3).
    6. Use a wrench to turn the EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (4) counter-clockwise 6 N.m (53 lb in), then hold.
    7. Tighten the EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolt (3) to lock the camshaft position intake actuator securely in place.
    8. Remove the wrench from EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (4).

    Tighten the NEW camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolts (1). Fastener Specifications

    Loosen the 2 EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolts (2) to un-lock the camshaft position actuators.

  58. Disengage the tangs of the EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (1) from the camshaft position intake and exhaust actuator slots.

    Remove the 2 EN-52461  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolts (3).

    Remove the 2 EN-52461-200  Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool 2.7L Adapter bolts (3).

  63. Rotate both handles (4) of the EN-52462-A  Camshaft Alignment Tool towards the front of the engine.

    Loosen and disengage the EN-52462-A  Camshaft Alignment Tool bolt (2) from camshaft carrier.

    Clean and apply sealant to the 2 camshaft cover core hole plugs (1). Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

    Ensure the 2 engine front cover locating pins (1) are in place.

  69. Timing Chain Upper Cover Seal (2) - Install NEW

    NOTE:

    Ensure that the sealing surface is clear of oil, grease and old sealant material.

    NOTE:

    Ensure proper use of room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealant. Use of Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) and Anaerobic Sealant

    NOTE:

    The timing chain upper cover must be installed within 8 minutes of the RTV sealant application.

    Apply room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealant at the seam between the camshaft housing and the cylinder head where indicated.

  94. Connect the battery negative cable. Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection

    Refer to Diesel/Gasoline Vapors Warning .

    Refer to Safety Glasses Warning .

  96. Pressurize the fuel system and inspect for leaks.

    Ensure the intake manifold cover insulator retainers fully engage the intake manifold cover studs.

    Push down on the front of the intake manifold cover (2).

  102. Install the oil fill cap.
