Cleaning and Inspection Procedure - Required

    NOTE:

    Do not soak or submerge the fuel pump in solvent.

    Clean the fuel pump (2) and valve lifter follower (5).

  2. Dry the fuel pump and valve lifter follower with compressed air.
  3. Inspect the fuel pump for the following conditions:
    1. Damage to the connection ports (1)
    2. Damage to the electrical connector (2)
    3. Damage to the sealing surface (3)
    4. Damage to or a bent or binding plunger (7)
    5. Damage to the mounting holes (8)
  4. Inspect the valve lifter follower for the following conditions:
    1. A scored or worn fuel pump contact surface (4)
    2. A severely scuffed or worn body (5)
    3. Binding or roughness of the roller (6)
  5. If any of the above conditions exist, replace the fuel pump and/or the valve lifter follower.
  6. Clean the fuel injector bores.

    NOTE:

    Do not soak or submerge the fuel rail or injectors in solvent.

    Clean the exterior of the fuel rail (1) with a clean cloth and solvent.

  8. Inspect the fuel rail and components for the following conditions:
    • Damage, debris or restrictions to the fuel rail
    • Damage, debris or restrictions to the fuel ports in the fuel rail
    • Damage to the mounting area for the fuel rail
    • Damage to the fuel rail mounting bolts or mounting bolt grommets/isolators
    • Damage to the threads on the fuel rail feed fitting
    • Damage to the threads in the fuel pressure sensor bore
    • Damage to the fuel pressure sensor connector, threads, or sealing face

    Inspect the fuel injectors for the following conditions:

    CAUTION:

    The fuel injector must be cleaned with the proper cleaning equipment. DO NOT use abrasive cleaning methods, such as a metallic brush, to remove deposits. Cleaning an injector with improper tools will damage the fuel injector.

    • Damage to the fuel injector connector (1)
    • Damage to the fuel inlet (2)
    • Damage to the sealing surface on the fuel injector (3)
    • Damage to the fuel injector body (4)
    • Damage to the fuel injector tip (5)
  10. Replace the fuel rail or injector if any damage is found. Do not attempt to repair a fuel rail or injector.
