Installation Procedure
Ensure the piston ring end gaps are positioned 90 degrees to each other.
- Upper compression ring joint (1)
- Lower compression ring joint (2)
- Upper oil ring rail joint (5)
- Oil ring rail spacer joint (4)
- Lower oil ring rail joint (3)
- NOTE:
The connecting rods and caps must be installed in the same order and orientation in which they were removed. If new connecting rods are required, the connecting rod is provided as an assembly, and the upper rod will need to be disassembled from the lower cap.
Connecting Rod Bearing (2) - Install NEW [4x]
- Install the bearing inserts into the connecting rod and the connecting rod cap.
- Lubricate the connecting rod bearings with engine oil. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
NOTE:The connecting rod bearing anti-rotation tab grooves are to point toward the right-hand side of the engine.
- Install the EN-52525 Connecting Rod Guide Set into the connecting rod (1) bolt holes. This protects the crankshaft journal during piston and connecting rod installation.
- Install J-8037
Ring Compressor, piston (1), and the connecting rod to the correct bore.
- Lubricate the piston and the piston rings with engine oil.
- Do not disturb the piston ring end gap location.
- The piston must be installed so that the arrow mark on the top of the piston points to the front of the engine.
- Lubricate the engine bore with engine oil, then place the piston in its matching bore.
- Tap the piston into its bore with a hammer handle. Guide the connecting rod to the connecting rod journal while tapping the piston into place.
- Hold the J-8037 Ring Compressor against the engine block until all the rings have entered the cylinder bore.
- Remove the connecting rod guides from the connecting rod bolt holes.
- NOTE:
Ensure that the connecting rod cap is properly oriented on the connecting rod.
Connecting Rod Bearing (3) - Install NEW [4x]
- Connecting Rod Cap (2) - Install [4x]
- Install the NEW connecting rod bolts (1) and tighten using the EN-45059-A Angle Meter - Fastener Specifications
- Install the remaining connecting rod and piston assemblies.
- NOTE:
Rotate the crankshaft to ensure that it moves freely and does not bind.
Measure the connecting rod side clearance with a feeler gauge (1). ENGINE MECHANICAL SPECIFICATIONS
- Measure the piston deck height. ENGINE MECHANICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Ensure proper use of room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealant. Use of Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) and Anaerobic Sealant
- Clean the engine block sealing surface and ensure the bolt threads are free of RTV and debris prior to RTV bead application.
- Clean the lower crankcase extension housing and ensure the housing is free of oils and finger prints prior to RTV bead application.
- Apply a 4 mm bead of sealant (1) to the crankshaft rear oil seal housing. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
- Apply 6 mm bead of sealant to the locations indicated, dimension a. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
Oil Pan High Pressure Port Seal (2) - Install NEW
- Lower Crankcase Extension (1) - Install
Lower Crankcase Extension Bolt (1) - Install and tighten in sequence - Fastener Specifications
- Lower Crankcase Extension Bolt (2) - Install and tighten in sequence - Fastener Specifications
- Lower Crankcase Extension Bolt (3) - Install and tighten in sequence - Fastener Specifications
- Lower Crankcase Extension Bolt (4) - Install and tighten in sequence [8x] - Fastener Specifications
- Lower Crankcase Extension Bolt (5) - Install and tighten in sequence [3x] - Fastener Specifications
- NOTE:
Balancer shaft driven sprocket is keyed to fit one way on the balancer driven shaft.
Install the balancer chain and balancer shaft driven sprocket to the balancer driven shaft:
- Ensure the marks on the balancer driven shaft (2) face each other.
- Align the double yellow links (4) on the balancer shaft chain to the double timing marks on the balancer shaft driven sprocket (3).
- Align the pink link (1) to the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket (5).
- CAUTION:
Refer to TORQUE-TO-YIELD FASTENER CAUTION
Balancer Shaft Sprocket Bolt (1) - Install NEW and tighten - Fastener Specifications
Balancer Chain Guide (3) - Install
- Timing Chain Guide Bolt (2) - Install and tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications
If the balancer chain tensioner (1) needs to be assembled, install the check ball spring (2), plunger orifice (3), main spring (4) and the plunger (5). Then install the EN-955-10-A Locking Pin to reset the tensioner.
Balancer Chain Tensioner (2) - Install
- Balancer Chain Tensioner Bolt (1) - Install and tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications
EN-52593 Chain Tensioner Retention Pin (2) - Remove
- NOTE:
EN-52483 Cover Installation Guide Pins are used to ensure the cover is aligned properly and aids in keeping the crankshaft rear oil seal housing square to the engine block. Use the EN-52483 Cover Installation Guide Pins next to the crankshaft rear oil seal housing location pins.
Install the EN-52483 Cover Installation Guide Pins (2).
Ensure proper use of room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealant. Use of Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) and Anaerobic Sealant
- Clean the engine block sealing surface and ensure the bolt threads are free of RTV and debris prior to RTV bead application.
- Clean the NEW crankshaft rear oil seal housing and ensure the housing is free of oils and finger prints prior to RTV bead application.
- Apply a 4 mm bead of sealant (1) to the crankshaft rear oil seal housing. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
- Apply 6 mm bead of sealant to the locations indicated, dimension a. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
- NOTE:
Use the seal protector/installer that comes with the new crankshaft rear oil seal housing.
Install the supplied seal protector/installer (3) at the crankshaft rear oil seal. Adjust the seal protector/installer to the edge of the lip seal (4).
- Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Housing (2) - Install NEW
- Align the new housing (2) to the EN-52483 Cover Installation Guide Pins (1).
- Stop when the seal protector contacts the end of the crankshaft.
- Now press in the center of the cover, allowing the crankshaft end to push out the protector.
- Once completed, inspect the outer perimeter of the seal and ensure it is seated correctly, and has not folded out of position.
Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Housing Bolt (1) - Install, but do NOT tighten [14x]
- Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Housing Bolt (1) - Tighten in sequence [14x] - Loosening Sequence Loosening Sequence Fastener Specifications
Crankshaft Position Sensor (2) - Install
- Crankshaft Position Sensor Bolt (1) - Install and tighten - Fastener Specifications
Crankshaft Position Sensor Reluctor Ring (1) - Install
Engage the EN-52476 Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool (1) slide through the flex plate teeth.
Automatic Transmission Flex Plate (2) - Install
- Automatic Transmission Flex Plate Bolt (1) - Install NEW and hand tighten [8x]
- Automatic Transmission Flex Plate Bolt (1) - Tighten in sequence - Fastener Specifications
Ensure that the timing pin is in time with the flex plate hole and then disengage the pin by pulling back and rotating 90 degrees.
Electrical Connector (1) - Connect
Oil Pump Suction Pipe Gasket (3) - Install NEW
- Oil Pump Suction Pipe (2) - Install
- Oil Pump Suction Pipe Bolt (1) - Install and tighten - Fastener Specifications
Wipe the oil pan surface with the Adhesion Plastic Pan Primer Promoter using a clean shop towel. Allow the cleaner to flash / evaporate. Wipe off the sealing surfaces with a lint free cloth. Do not touch the sealing surface after cleaning to avoid inducing containment debris to the bonding surface area. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
- Ensure proper use of room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealant. Use of Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) and Anaerobic Sealant
- Apply a 3 mm bead of sealant (1) around the seal bead path, as shown. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
Install the EN-52483 Cover Installation Guide Pins (3) in two locations to ensure proper oil pan alignment.
- Oil Pan (2) - Install NEW
- Lower Oil Pan Bolt (1) - Install and hand tighten [4x]
- EN-52483 Cover Installation Guide Pins - Remove [2x]
- Lower Oil Pan Bolt (1) - Install and hand tighten [13x]
- Lower Oil Pan Bolt (1) - Tighten in sequence [17x] - Fastener Specifications
Cylinder Head Gasket (1) - Install NEW
- Cylinder Head (2) - Install
- Cylinder Head Bolt (3) - Install NEW and hand tighten [10x]
- Cylinder Head Bolt (4) - Install NEW and hand tighten [3x]
- Cylinder Head Bolt (5) - Install NEW and hand tighten [3x]
- Cylinder Head Bolt (6) - Install NEW and hand tighten [2x]
- Tighten the 18 cylinder head bolts (3, 4, 5, 6) in sequence. Fastener Specifications
Use low VOC brake cleaner to ensure the surface areas are clean. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
- EN-46109 Engine Front Cover Installation Guide Pins (2) - Install
- Apply a 3 mm wide RTV bead along the edge of the cylinder head. Path is perpendicular to the crank axis. Bead is centered 2.5 mm back from front edge of head. Bead runs the entire length of sealing surface across sealing land on both sides.Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
- Camshaft Cover Gasket (1) - Install NEW
Camshaft Cover (1) - Install
NOTE:Ensure the EN-52462-A Camshaft Alignment Tool is installed and camshafts are in the timed position.
- Rock the camshaft carrier back and fourth to seat the camshaft carrier cover onto the two dowels in the cylinder head sealing surface.
- EN-46109 Engine Front Cover Installation Guide Pins (2) - Remove
Camshaft Cover Bolt (1) - Install and hand tighten [5x]
- If a NEW threaded component is being installed, loosen the adhesive using a metal pick or similar tool before proceeding. If threaded component is reused, prepare the threaded component using the following steps:
- Remove any loose cured adhesive from the external threads of the component using a lint free cloth.
- Thread the cleaned component into the internal mating threads and remove to loosen trapped cured adhesive.
- Apply thread locking adhesive to the external threads of the component. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
- Ensure there are no gaps in the thread locking adhesive once applied to the component.
- Camshaft Cover Stud (2, 3) - Install and hand tighten [18x]
- Camshaft Cover Bolt (1) - Tighten in sequence [4x] - Fastener Specifications
- Camshaft Cover Stud (2, 3) - Tighten in sequence [18x] - Fastener Specifications
Timing Chain (4) - Install
- Crankshaft Sprocket (3) - Install
- Timing Chain Guide (2) - Install
- Timing Chain Guide Bolt (1) - Install and tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications
Timing Chain Guide (5) - Install
- If a NEW threaded component is being installed, loosen the adhesive using a metal pick or similar tool before proceeding. If threaded component is reused, prepare the threaded component using the following steps:
- Remove any loose cured adhesive from the external threads of the component using a lint free cloth.
- Thread the cleaned component into the internal mating threads and remove to loosen trapped cured adhesive.
- Apply thread locking adhesive to the external threads of the component. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
- Ensure there are no gaps in the thread locking adhesive once applied to the component.
- Timing Chain Guide Bolt (4) - Install and tighten - Fastener Specifications
- Timing Chain Tensioner Gasket (3) - Install NEW
- Timing Chain Tensioner (2) - Install
- Timing Chain Tensioner Bolt (1) - Install and tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications
- NOTE:
Lubricate under the washer surface.
Lubricate the NEW camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolts (1) with clean engine oil where indicated. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
Install the exhaust camshaft position actuator (3) and the intake camshaft position actuator (4) before installing the tool.
Install and hand tighten the NEW camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolt (1) [2x].
- NOTE:
Ensure the camshaft carrier and cylinder head face are clean and free from RTV prior to installing the EN-52461-200 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool 2.7L Adapter.
EN-52461-200 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool 2.7L Adapter (2) - Install [2x]
- Install and tighten the two EN-52461-200 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool 2.7L Adapter bolts (3) enough to secure the EN-52461-200 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool 2.7L Adapter (2) to the cylinder head.
EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (1) @ EN-52461-200 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool 2.7L Adapter (2) - Install
- Install and tighten the two EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolts (3).
- CAUTION:
Hold the camshaft position actuator firmly and squarely during camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolt removal/installation. Failure to do so may result in damage to the inside of the camshaft position actuator.
NOTE:Pressure must be applied towards the engine on the EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool at points (3) prior to and during any time the following two conditions are simultaneously met.
- The camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolt is loosened or removed.
- The EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolts (2, 3) are loosened.
Shift the slack in the timing chain to be taken up by the timing chain tensioner.
- Use a wrench to turn the EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (1) counter-clockwise 6 N.m 53 lb in, then hold.
- Tighten the EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolt (2) to lock the intake actuator securely in place.
- Remove the wrench from EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (1).
- Use a wrench to turn the EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (4) counter-clockwise 6 N.m 53 lb in, then hold.
- Tighten the EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolt (3) to lock the exhaust actuator securely in place.
- Remove the wrench from EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (4).
Tighten the NEW camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolt (1). Fastener Specifications
- EN-46112 Tensioner Retraction Pins (6) - Remove
Loosen the EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolts (2) to un-lock the actuators.
- Disengage the tangs of the EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (1) from the intake and exhaust camshaft position actuator slots.
Remove the two EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool bolts (3).
- EN-52461 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool (1) @ EN-52461-200 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool 2.7L Adapter (2) - Remove
Remove the two EN-52461-200 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool 2.7L Adapter bolts (3).
- EN-52461-200 Camshaft Torque Reaction Tool 2.7L Adapter (2) - Remove [2x]
- Rotate both handles (4) of the EN-52462-A Camshaft Alignment Tool towards the front of the engine.
Loosen and disengage the EN-52462-A Camshaft Alignment Tool bolt (2) from camshaft carrier.
- EN-52462-A Camshaft Alignment Tool (1) - Remove
Clean and apply sealant to the camshaft cover core hole plug (1) [2x]. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
- Camshaft Cover Core Hole Plug (1) - Install and tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications
- Camshaft Carrier Bolt (2) - Install and tighten - Fastener Specifications
EN-52483 Cover Installation Guide Pins (4) - Install
- NOTE:
The sealing surface must be clean and free of contaminants prior to applying the RTV sealant. Do not touch the sealing surface once it has been cleaned.
Clean the sealing surface of the NEW engine front cover with low VOC brake cleaner, then wipe dry with a clean lint free cloth.
- Ensure proper use of room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealant. Use of Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) and Anaerobic Sealant
- Apply a bead of RTV (1) to the NEW engine front cover. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
Engine Front Cover Locating Pin (1) - Install [2x]
- Engine Front Cover (2) - Install NEW
- Engine Front Cover Bolt (3) - Install and hand tighten [8x]
- EN-52483 Cover Installation Guide Pins (4) - Remove
- Engine Front Cover Bolt (3) - Install and hand tighten [2x]
- Engine Front Cover Bolt (3) - Tighten in sequence [10x] - Fastener Specifications
- NOTE:
The timing pin (3) is installed into the flexplate for engine timing procedures, it can be damaged if torque is applied to the flexplate with the timing pin engaged. The pin must be placed in the retracted position before torque is applied to the flexplate.
Install the slide (4) of the EN-52476 Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool.
Crankshaft Balancer (2) - Install
- Crankshaft Balancer Bolt (1) - Install NEW and tighten - Fastener Specifications
Engine Front Cover Locating Pin - Install [2x]
- Timing Belt Front Upper Cover Seal (4) - Install NEW
- Apply a dollop of RTV on the T-joint of the camshaft carrier and cylinder head. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
- Timing Chain Upper Cover (3) - Install
- Timing Chain Upper Cover Bolt (1) - Install and tighten [9x] - Fastener Specifications
- Timing Chain Upper Cover Bolt (2) - Install and tighten - Fastener Specifications
Camshaft Position Actuator Magnet Gasket (3) - Install NEW
- Camshaft Position Actuator Magnet (2) - Install
- Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Bolt (1) - Install and tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications
Camshaft Position Actuator Magnet Gasket (3) - Install NEW
- Camshaft Position Actuator Magnet (2) - Install
- Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Bolt (1) - Install and tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications
- Engine - Install - Engine Replacement (AWD)
Refer to TORQUE-TO-YIELD FASTENER CAUTION
This vehicle is equipped with torque-to-yield or single use fasteners. Install a NEW torque-to-yield or single use fastener when installing this component. Failure to replace the torque-to-yield or single use fastener could cause damage to the vehicle or component.
DO NOT allow the RTV to skim over, the crankcase extension housing must be installed within 8 minutes of RTV being applied.
DO NOT allow the RTV to skim over, the crankshaft rear seal housing must be installed within 8 minutes of RTV being applied.
Do not allow sealant to skim over, the oil pan must be installed within 8 minutes of sealer application.
Install some lower oil pan bolts to secure the oil pan.
Install the remaining lower oil pan bolts.
Do not allow RTV to skin over. The engine front cover must be installed within 8 minutes of RTV application.
Leave the seal protector that is supplied with the new engine front cover in place prior to installation. The crankshaft sprocket will push the seal protector out of the engine front cover as it is installed. Inspect the perimeter of the seal once the NEW engine front cover is completely seated to ensure the lip of the seal is not folded over itself.
