Assemble Procedure

  1. GM2742582Courtesy of GENERAL MOTORS COMPANY
    NOTE:

Install the piston onto the connecting rod with the arrow on top of the piston oriented to the same side as the cast feature at the split line of the connecting rod.

The arrow (1), on the top of the piston, must go to the front of the block.

  2. The feature at the split line (4), located on one side of the connecting rod, must go to the front of the block.
  3. Assemble the connecting rod (3) and the piston (2).

    CAUTION:

Install the piston pin retainers correctly in the retaining groove during assembly in order to avoid engine damage.

    NOTE:

Use NEW retainers. Two retainers hold each piston pin in place.

Use the following procedure to assemble the piston pin (2) and the piston pin retainer (1):

    1. Coat the piston pin (2) with oil.
    2. Install one NEW piston pin retainer (1) into the retaining groove using EN-49941  Piston Retainer Ring Remover/Installer and the appropriate adapter. Rotate the retainer until it is fully seated in the groove.
    3. Install the connecting rod (4) and the piston pin (2).

Push the piston pin (2) until it bottoms in the previously installed retainer.

    4. Install the second NEW piston pin retainer (1), using EN-49941  Piston Retainer Ring Remover/Installer (1) and the appropriate adapter.
    5. Ensure that the piston (3) moves freely.

The piston ring end gaps must be positioned 90 degrees to each other.

    • Upper compression ring joint (1)
    • Lower compression ring joint (2)
    • Upper oil ring rail joint (5)
    • Oil ring rail spacer joint (4)
    • Lower oil ring rail joint (3)

    WARNING:

When removing, handling or installing this component wear protective gloves. The sharp edges on the component may be very sharp and may cause injury.

    CAUTION:

Use a piston ring expander to install the piston rings. The rings may be damaged if expanded more than necessary.

Install the following components of the oil control ring assembly:

    1. The piston oil ring rail (5)
    2. The piston oil ring rail spacer (4)
    3. The second piston oil ring rail (3)
  7. Install the piston lower compression ring (2). Place the manufacturer's mark facing up.
  8. Install the piston upper compression ring (1).

    NOTE:
    • The piston is directional and must be installed in the engine block in the proper direction. The dot on the top of the piston must face the front of the engine.
    • The piston is model dependent and may not appear exactly as shown.

Lubricate the piston pin bores in the piston (1) and the connecting rod (2) with prelube lubricant. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

  2. GM5366787Courtesy of GENERAL MOTORS COMPANY

Assemble the piston (3) and piston pin (2) to the connecting rod (4). Properly orient the piston when reusing a marked connecting rod.

  3. Align the piston pin bore with the connecting rod pin bore.
  4. Slide the piston pin (1) into the piston (3) and the connecting rod (4).
  5. NOTE:

New piston pin retainers must be used. Never reuse the piston pin retainers.

  6. Install NEW piston pin retainers (1) using the EN-46745  Piston Pin Clip Remover/Installer. Align the EN-46745  Piston Pin Clip Remover/Installer to the notch in the piston.

Ensure that the piston pin retainers (1) are fully seated in their grooves.

  8. Repeat these procedures for the remaining pistons.

Piston Ring Installation Procedure

  1. GM5366804Courtesy of GENERAL MOTORS COMPANY

Properly orient the oil control ring (1) expander as shown before installation. The ends of the expander must be facing toward the top of the piston.

  2. GM2969654Courtesy of GENERAL MOTORS COMPANY

The upper and lower compression rings have either a dimple (1) or the word "TOP" (2) on the top side of the ring. The rings should be installed so that either of these marks are facing the top of the piston.

  3. GM5366783Courtesy of GENERAL MOTORS COMPANY

Using a piston ring expander, install the oil control ring assembly using the following procedure:

    1. Install the expander ring (3).
    2. Install the 2 oil scraper rings (4). Expand the rings only enough to clear the piston diameter. Overexpanding the piston rings will distort or crack the rings.
  4. NOTE:

The lower compression piston ring (2) is thicker and will not fit in the upper compression rings (1) position.

  5. Install the lower compression piston ring (2) onto the piston with the mark facing the top of the piston.
  6. Install the upper compression piston ring (1) onto the piston with the mark facing the top of the piston, if required.
  7. GM5366806Courtesy of GENERAL MOTORS COMPANY

Once the rings are installed, set the ring gaps for the oil control, second and top ring as follows. Use the piston location arrow for reference.

    1. Piston Compression Lower Ring (1) 30 degrees
    2. Piston Compression Upper Ring (2) 30 degrees
    3. Piston Oil Ring Rail- Top Ring (3)
    4. Piston Oil Ring Rail Spacer (4)
    5. Piston Oil Ring Rail- Second Ring (5)
