Removal Procedure
Refer to SIR Warning .
After installation of the steering wheel airbag module to the steering wheel, slightly pull the module outward. If there is no give on the airbag module then it is secured correctly. If the airbag module is not fully attached personal injury could result.
If a vehicle is equipped with a head curtain inflator module ensure that the inflator module and tether are undamaged. If tether or curtain airbag are damaged in any way, they must be replaced.
Use care when working around the head curtain inflator module. Sharp tools may puncture the curtain airbag. If the head curtain inflator module is damaged in any way, it must be replaced.

Instrument Panel Lower Airbag Nut (1) - Remove [2x]
- Instrument Panel Lower Airbag - Driver Side (2) - Remove
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
With a flat bladed plastic trim tool, start at the front and work your way back to release the clips.
- Instrument Panel Outer Trim Cover - Left Side (1) - Remove
Disconnect the hood primary latch release cable end retainer from the hood primary latch release cable handle (1).
Instrument Panel Lower Trim Panel Insulator Retainer (1) - Remove
- Instrument Panel Insulator Bolt (2) - Remove [2x]
- Instrument Panel Insulator Nut (3) - Remove [2x]
- NOTE:
Use a plastic trim tool if necessary.
Release the tabs from the instrument panel lower trim panel insulator (1).
Instrument Panel Lower Trim Panel Insulator (1) - Remove
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
Move the steering column up so you can access the lower left corner of the instrument panel center trim pad (1).
- Start with a flat - bladed plastic trim tool in the lower left corner of the instrument panel center trim pad (1) and work your way clockwise.
- Instrument Panel Center Trim Pad (1) - Remove
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
Data Link Connector Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]
- Instrument Panel Knee Bolster Bolt (2) - Remove [3x]
Release the clips with a suitable tool.
- Disconnect and reposition harness as necessary.
- Clear the instrument panel knee bolster deflector studs when removing the instrument panel knee bolster (1).
Pull the windshield garnish moldings (1) rearwards to release the tether from the A pillar.
- Access the windshield garnish bolt (2) which is located on the backside of the windshield garnish moldings (1) and secures the tether to the A pillar.
- Windshield Garnish Molding Bolt (2) - Remove [2x]
- Disconnect the electrical connectors.
- Windshield Garnish Molding (1) - Remove [2x]
Using a flat - bladed plastic trim tool, release the retaining clips.
- Instrument Panel Extension (1) - Remove
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
Instrument Panel Instrument Cluster Hood (1) - Remove
Extend the steering column to its furthest point to allow the instrument panel steering column upper trim cover (1) to clear the instrument panel.
- Using a small plastic trim tool, separate the instrument panel steering column upper trim cover (1) from the instrument panel steering column lower trim cover.
- NOTE:
Instrument panel steering column upper trim cover is removed for graphic clarity.
{If equipped} Disconnect the electrical connector (1)
Instrument Panel Cluster Trim Plate Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]
- Instrument Panel Cluster Trim Plate (2) - Remove
Instrument Panel Accessory Trim Plate Bolt @ Instrument Panel Carrier (1) - Remove [3x]
- Instrument Panel Outer Upper Bolt (2) - Remove
- Remove the instrument panel upper trim panel and instrument panel trim plate applique as an assembly (3).
Instrument Cluster Bolt (1) - Remove [4x]
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
- Instrument Cluster (2) - Remove
Instrument Panel Upper Bracket Bolt (1) - Remove [4x]
- Instrument Panel Upper Bracket (2) - Remove
Head - Up Display Bolt (1) - Remove [4x]
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
Head - Up Display (1) - Remove
Push on the grille where indicated to create a opening for the flat - bladed plastic trim tool (1).
- Using a flat - bladed plastic trim tool (1), release the retainer clips in a clockwise direction.
Radio Front Center Speaker Grille (1) - Remove
Radio Front Center Speaker Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
- Radio Front Center Speaker (2) - Remove
With a flat bladed plastic trim tool, start at the top to release the clip.
- Instrument Panel Radio Front Trim Plate (1) - Remove
With a flat bladed plastic trim tool, start at the top to release the clip.
- Instrument Panel Radio Front Trim Plate (1) - Remove
Radio Control Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]
- Disconnect the electrical connectors.
- Radio Control (2) - Remove
With a flat bladed plastic trim tool, start at the front and work your way back to release the clips.
- Instrument Panel Outer Trim Cover (1) - Remove
- NOTE:
Prior to disconnecting the BCM, one or both front windows should be down to allow access into the vehicle once the door is closed.
Body Control Module Bracket Bolt (1) - Remove
- Unlock and lower the body control module bracket (2).
- Disconnect the electrical connectors.
- Close and lock the body control module bracket (2) into the instrument panel lower trim panel insulator.
Instrument Panel Insulator Bolt (1) - Remove [4x]
- NOTE:
Use a plastic trim tool if necessary.
Release the front edge of the front floor console extension panel from the instrument panel lower trim panel insulator (1).
- Instrument Panel Lower Trim Panel Insulator (1) - Remove
- Disconnect the electrical connectors.
Instrument Panel Lower Airbag Nut (1) - Remove [2x]
- Instrument Panel Lower Airbag - Passenger Side (2) - Remove
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
Instrument Panel Compartment Bolt (1) - Remove [5x]
Instrument Panel Compartment (1) - Remove
- Disconnect the electrical connectors.
Using a flat - bladed plastic trim tool, release the retaining clips.
- Instrument Panel Trim Pad (1) - Remove
Disconnect and reposition harness as necessary.
- Instrument Panel Airbag Bolt (1) - Remove [3x]
- Instrument Panel Upper Trim Panel Bolt (2) - Remove [3x]
Instrument Panel Upper Trim Panel Bolt (1) - Remove [6x]
Instrument Panel Upper Trim Panel - Right Side (1) - Remove
Instrument Panel Accessory Trim Plate Bolt @ Instrument Panel Carrier (1) - Remove [6x]
- Instrument Panel Trim Plate Applique - Right Side (2) - Remove
- Deactivate the steering column lock control module using the following procedure:
- With foot OFF the brake pedal and the shift lever in the PARK position, press and release the ignition and start switch once. This will place the ignition system in the ACCESSORY mode and unlock the steering column for 5 minutes.
- Turn the steering wheel to verify the steering column is NOT locked.
- Remove the fuse for the steering column lock control module. The fuse is found in the instrument panel fuse block and is labeled ESCL. Electrical Center Identification Views
Floor Front Air Outlet Duct Bolt (1) - Remove
- Floor Front Air Outlet Duct - Left Side - Outer (2) - Remove
Instrument Panel Tie Bar Brace Bolt (1) - Remove [3x]
- Instrument Panel Knee Bolster Deflector (2) - Remove
Use a flat bladed plastic trim tool to depress the steering wheel airbag access hole cover detents to remove the 2 steering wheel airbag access hole covers (1).
- Steering Wheel Airbag Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]
- Release the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer.
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
- Steering Wheel Airbag (2) - Remove
- CAUTION:
The anti - rotation pin must be installed AFTER removing the steering wheel bolt. Removal torque of the steering wheel bolt may exceed the threshold of the steering column rivets and damage the steering column rivets, which will disable the telescoping mechanism. If the steering column rivets are damaged, a new steering column must be installed.
Loosen the steering wheel bolt (1) so that 2 - 3 threads are engaged.
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
- Wiggle the steering wheel until the wheel disengages completely.
- Steering Wheel Bolt (1) - Remove
- The steering column
- The intermediate shaft(s)
- The steering gear
- Install an appropriate device to prevent the steering column from rotating.
- Steering Wheel (2) - Remove
Rotate the steering wheel left and right to access the instrument panel steering column lower trim cover bolts (1).
- Instrument Panel Steering Column Lower Trim Cover Bolt (1) - Remove [3x]
- Instrument Panel Steering Column Lower Trim Cover (2) - Remove
- Mark the relationship between the steering column and the upper intermediate steering shaft using a grease pencil.
Upper Intermediate Steering Shaft Bolt (1) @ Steering Column - Remove
- Upper Intermediate Steering Shaft (2) @ Steering Column - Separate
- Disconnect the steering column electrical connectors as necessary.
- CAUTION:
Once the steering column is removed from the vehicle, the column is extremely susceptible to damage. Dropping the column assembly on the end could collapse the steering shaft or loosen the plastic injections, which maintain column rigidity. Leaning on the column assembly could cause the jacket to bend or deform. Any of the above damage could impair the columns collapsible design. Do NOT hammer on the end of the shaft, because hammering could loosen the plastic injections, which maintain column rigidity. If you need to remove the steering wheel, refer to the Steering Wheel Replacement procedure in this section.
NOTE:Support the steering column while removing the steering column nuts.
Steering Column Nut (2) - Remove [4x]
- Steering Column (1) - Remove
- Transfer components as necessary.
- If replacing the steering column, copy the match marks from the OLD steering column to the NEW steering column.
Front Floor Console (1) - Remove - Front Floor Console Removal and Installation (with M5N) Front Floor Console Removal and Installation (with MQA)
Instrument Panel Center Air Outlet Bolt (1) - Remove [3x]
- Instrument Panel Trim Plate (2) - Remove
Heater and Air Conditioning Control Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]
- Heater and Air Conditioning User Interface Control (2) - Remove
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
Hazard Warning Switch Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]
- Pull the hazard warning switch (2) straight back to release.
- Hazard Warning Switch (2) - Remove
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
Instrument Panel Center Trim Panel Bolt (1) - Remove [6x]
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
- Instrument Panel Lower Center Trim Panel (2) - Remove
Instrument Panel Outer Air Outlet Duct Retainer (1) - Remove
- Instrument Panel Outer Air Outlet Duct - Left Side (2) - Remove
Instrument Panel Outer Air Outlet Duct Retainer (1) - Remove
- Instrument Panel Outer Air Outlet Duct - Right Side (2) - Remove
Instrument Panel Center Air Outlet Duct Retainer (1) - Remove [2x]
- Instrument Panel Compartment Air Duct - Outer (2) - Remove
Front Compartment Fuse Block Bolt (1) - Remove
Instrument Panel Bolt (1) - Remove [15x]
- Disconnect and reposition harness as necessary.
With the aid of an assistant, remove the instrument panel carrier (1) from the vehicle.
With wheels of the vehicle facing straight ahead, secure the steering wheel utilizing steering column anti - rotation pin, steering column lock, or a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components:
After disconnecting these components, do not rotate the steering wheel or move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow this procedure may cause the SIR coil assembly to become un - centered and cause possible damage to the SIR coil. If you think the SIR coil has become un - centered, refer to your specific SIR coil's centering procedure to re - center SIR Coil.
