Special Tools

J-8001  Dial Indicator

Equivalent regional tools: Special Tools 

  1. Assemble or disassemble the internal components to the clutch pack snap ring (1).
    1. Transfer Case Front Drive Axle Viscous Clutch Assemble 
    2. Transfer Case Assemble 
    3. Transfer Case Disassemble

    The purpose of this procedure is to obtain a proper clutch travel of 0.7 - 1.2 mm (0.0275 - 0.0472 in.) when assembled with a selective thrust washer.

  3. Transfer Case Rear Output Shaft Rear Bearing Retaining Ring (1) - Install
  4. NOTE:

    DO NOT install the spring at this time. Temporarily remove the spring for selective thrust washer measurement.

  5. Transfer Case Four Wheel Drive Clutch Pressure Plate Spring (2) - Remove
  6. Cam (3) - Install
  7. Transfer Case Scissor Lever Ball (4) - Install [3x]
  8. Transfer Case Scissor Mechanism Lever (5) - Install
  9. Transfer Case Two/Four Wheel Drive Clutch Coil Housing (6) - Install
  10. Transfer Case Four Wheel Drive Clutch Housing Bearing (7) - Install
  11. Transfer Case Four Wheel Drive Clutch Shim (8) - Install
  12. Attach the J-8001  Dial Indicator.
  13. Zero the J-8001  Dial Indicator on the rotor assembly in the "free state" assembled position.
  14. Rotate the rotor counter clockwise using moderate hand pressure until it stops. Record this measurement.
  15. The ideal selected spacer will create the preferred rotor travel value of 0.95 mm (0.0375 in.) The allowable travel range is 0.7 - 1.2 mm (0.0275 - 0.0472 in.)
  16. The selective spacer requires verification before proceeding.
    1. Remove the installed spacer and install a selected spacer of the correct thickness.
    2. Refer to Spacer and Shim Specifications  for a list of available shim sizes.
  17. Remove the J-8001  Dial Indicator and the DT-50924  Clutch Pack Measurement Adapter.
  18. Disassemble the components to the clutch pack retaining ring (1).
  19. Assemble the internal components to include the shim (8) and spring (2). Transfer Case Assemble
