Installation Procedure

    NOTE:

    Used valve rocker arms must be returned to the original position on the camshaft. If the camshaft is being replaced, the valve rocker arms actuated by the camshaft must also be replaced.

    Valve Rocker Arm (1) @ Hydraulic Valve Lash Adjuster (2) - Install [16x]

    Install the 8 intake valve rocker arms (1) with hydraulic valve lash adjuster (2).

    Positive Crankcase Ventilation Oil Separator Gasket (2) - Install NEW

    CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution .

    Positive Crankcase Ventilation Oil Separator Bolt (1) - Install and tighten [6x] 8.5 N.m (75 lb in)

    NOTE:
    • DO NOT use any type of lubricant when installing the NEW combustion seals on the fuel injector tip.
    • Injectors do not need to come off the fuel rail to install NEW seals.

    Install EN-51955-1  long protector (1) onto the fuel injector tip, covering the first recessed area closest to the tip. Place a NEW seal (2) on EN-51955-1  long protector (1).

  8. Using EN-51955-4  pusher (3), install the seal (2) into the recessed area (4) of the fuel injector, then remove the EN-51955-1  long protector (1).
  9. Compress the seal (2) using EN-51955-3  pre-sizer (5).
  10. Using EN-51955-5  sizer (6), resize the seal.
  11. Install EN-51955-2  short protector (7) onto the fuel injector tip. Place a second NEW seal (8) on EN-51955-2  short protector (7).
  12. Using EN-51955-4  pusher (3), install the seal (8) into the remaining recessed area (9) of the fuel injector, then remove EN-51955-2  short protector (7).
  13. Compress the seal (8) using EN-51955-3  pre-sizer (5).
  14. Using EN-51955-5  sizer (6), resize the seal.

    NOTE:

    The fuel injector seals must fit properly in the relative groove. Overlapping of the fuel injector seals with the external surface of the injector must be avoided.

    Check both of the fuel injector combustion seals on each fuel injector for correct seat:

    • The seal must not be too large, buckled, or corrugated (1)
    • The seal must be fixed tight and accurate (2)
  16. If the seals are not installed correctly, remove the incorrect seal and replace with a NEW seal.

    Ensure the fuel injector bores are clean.

  18. NOTE:

    Hand place the fuel injection fuel rail into position on the cylinder head.

  19. Direct Fuel Injection Fuel Rail (1) - Install

    NOTE:

    Install the four fuel injection fuel rail bolts hand tight only, DO NOT apply any torque.

    Fuel Injection Fuel Rail Bolt (1, 2, 3) - Install and hand tighten [4x]

  21. Tighten the two outer fuel injection fuel rail bolts (1, 3) alternating in steps of 1/2 turn, until the direct fuel injection fuel rail (4) is fully seated.
  22. Fuel Injection Fuel Rail Bolt (1, 2, 3) - Tighten [4x] 36 N.m (27 lb ft)

    WARNING:

    The noise cancelling foam component MUST be replaced if it has been exposed to engine fluids. Failure to replace the noise cancelling foam component that has been exposed to engine fluids may result in an engine fire resulting in catastrophic engine damage, and possible injury or death.

    Fuel Injection Fuel Rail Insulator (1) - Install

    Cylinder Head Gasket (3) - Install NEW

    Ensure the correct bolt length is used in the correct location.

    Cylinder Head Bolt (1, 2, 3) - Install and hand tighten [8x]

    1. Cylinder Head Bolt (1 - 10) - First Pass: 30 N.m (22 lb ft)
    2. Cylinder Head Bolt (11 - 18) Tighten - 15 N.m (11 lb ft)
    3. Cylinder Head Bolt (1 - 10) - Final Pass: 190 degrees - Using EN-45059  Angle Meter

    Turbocharger Heat Shield (2) - Install NEW

  30. Position the compressor air intake turbocharger (1) to the cylinder head.
  31. Turbocharger Bolt (3) - Install NEW and hand tighten [4x]

    A small amount of adhesive in the corners will help keep the gasket in place.

    Connect the electrical connectors at the knock sensor (3) and the coolant temperature sensor (2) under the fuel rail insulator.

    The EN-52443  High Pressure Fuel Pump Alignment Tool has two ends marked with number 1 (1) and number 2 (2).

    NOTE:
    • The camshaft MUST be at the base circle position before the fuel pump is installed.
    • At the base circle position, the EN-52443  High Pressure Fuel Pump Alignment Tool will sit flush with the cylinder head.

    Install the EN-52443  High Pressure Fuel Pump Alignment Tool (1) with the number 2 (1) facing outward and turn the crankshaft until the camshaft lobe is at the base circle position.

    Lubricate the valve lifter follower (2) with clean engine oil.

  71. CAUTION:

    Alternately hand-tighten the fuel pump bolts one turn at a time until the pump is fully seated. Trying to draw down the pump without even side-to-side tightening may result in pump plunger damage.

  72. Fuel Pump Bolt (4) - Install and tighten [2x] 36 N.m (27 lb ft)
  73. Connect the fuel pump electrical connector.

    Fuel Feed Intermediate Pipe (2) - Install NEW

  75. Nut @ Fuel Feed Intermediate Pipe (2) - Tighten [2x] 30 N.m (22 lb ft)

    Service may offer bolts without micro-encapsulated thread locking adhesive. If this is the case, clean the threads and reapply adhesive to the bolts.

    Timing Chain (1) - Install

  125. Timing Chain (1) @ Crankshaft Sprocket @ Timing Chain Upper Guide (2) - Install

    NOTE:

    The timing pin (3) is installed into the flexplate for engine timing procedures, it can be damaged if torque is applied to the flexplate with the timing pin engaged. The timing pin must be placed in the retracted position using the handle (1) and twisting to locked position. The slide part (4) to be installed to the flex plate when torque is applied to the flexplate or crankshaft balancer bolt.

    Retract the timing pin (3) using the handle (1) of the EN-52476  Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool (2).

    Install the EN-52461  Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (5) along with the 2 EN-52461-100  Adapter Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (2, 3) to the engine.

    CAUTION:

    Hold the camshaft sprocket firmly and squarely during camshaft sprocket bolt removal/installation. Failure to do so may result in damage to the inside of the camshaft sprocket.

    Hold the intake camshaft sprocket (1) with hands from underneath the EN-52461  Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (3) and install the EN-52461-1  Holder into the intake camshaft sprocket to hold it securely before installing the camshaft sprocket bolt.

  129. Line up intake camshaft sprocket (1) with alignment marks, as you install them on chain and the housing which should of been done on removal.

    Hold the exhaust camshaft sprocket (1) with hands from underneath the EN-52461  Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (3) and install the EN-52461-1  Holder into the exhaust camshaft sprocket to hold it securely before installing the camshaft sprocket bolt (1).

  131. Line up exhaust camshaft sprocket (1) with alignment marks, as you install them on chain and the housing which should of been done on removal.

    Lubricate under the washer surface.

    Lubricate the camshaft sprocket bolts (1) with clean engine oil where indicated. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

    Camshaft Sprocket Bolt (1) - Install NEW and hand tighten

    Check that the EN-52461-1  Holder (1) sits correctly in the hole of the camshaft sprocket.

  135. Rotate the EN-52461-1  Holder counter clockwise (1).
  136. While holding the EN-52461-1  Holder (1) in the clockwise position to 6 N.m (53 lb in), tighten the bolt (4) just enough to hold the EN-52461-1  Holder in place.
  137. Intake Camshaft Sprocket Bolt (2) - Tighten
    1. First Pass: 50 N.m (37 lb ft)
    2. Final Pass: 28 degrees
  138. Check that the EN-52461-1  Holder (1) sits correctly in the hole of the exhaust camshaft sprocket.
  139. Tighten the EN-52461-1  Holder (1). Rotate the EN-52461-1  Holder counter clockwise.
  140. While holding the EN-52461-1  Holder in the counter clockwise position to 6 N.m (53 lb in), tighten the bolt (3) just enough to hold the EN-52461-1  Holder in place.
  141. Exhaust Camshaft Sprocket Bolt (2) - Tighten
    1. First Pass: 50 N.m (37 lb ft)
    2. Final Pass: 28 degrees

    Loosen the 2 bolts (1, 4) of EN-52461-100  Adapter Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (5).

  147. Remove the EN-52461  Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (5) along with the 2 EN-52461-100  Adapter Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (2, 3) from the engine.

    Inspect the inside of the ignition coil boot for a thin, even coat of dielectric grease. If there is no grease present or additional grease is necessary, apply a thin coating of dielectric grease to the inside of the ignition coil boot up to a depth of 15 mm (0.60 in from the end of the boot.

    - Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

  158. Remove any excess dielectric grease from around the end of the ignition coil boot and ensure there is not an excessive amount within the boot.

  160. Ignition Coil Bolt (1) - Install and tighten [8x] 8.5 N.m (75 lb in)

    Ensure the engine sight shield retainers fully engage the intake manifold cover studs.

    Push down on the front of the intake manifold cover (1) engaging the intake manifold cover retainers to the intake manifold cover studs.

  254. Fill the engine oil to the proper level with NEW engine oil. Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement 
  255. Install the oil fill cap.
  256. Fill the cooling system. Cooling System Draining and Filling (LSY GE 47716) , or Cooling System Draining and Filling (LSY Static Fill)
  257. Check the cooling system for leaks.
  258. Connect the battery. Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
  259. Perform the throttle body idle air flow compensation reset. Throttle Body Idle Air Flow Compensation Reset
  260. Inspect for fuel leaks using the following procedure:
    1. Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF for 2 seconds.
    2. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
    3. Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
    4. Inspect for fuel leaks.
  261. Start the engine and check for coolant leaks.
  262. Perform the engine oil life reset. GM Oil Life System Resetting (Without Scan Tool) , or GM Oil Life System Resetting (With Scan Tool)
