Intake Manifold Cover Bolt (1) - Remove
Intake Manifold Cover Insulator (1) - Remove
- Relieve the fuel system pressure. Fuel Pressure Relief
- Drain the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling (L3B Static Fill) , or Cooling System Draining and Filling (L3B GE 47716)
- Drain the engine oil. Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement (RWD) , or Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement (AWD)
- Disconnect the battery negative cable. Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
- Install the engine support fixture. Engine Support Fixture
Fuel Feed Pipe Bolt (1) - Remove
Disconnect the fuel feed pipe (1) from the fuel pump and the fuel feed pipe - underbody. Metal Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service
- Fuel Feed Pipe (1) - Remove
Electrical Connector (1) - Disconnect [5x]
- Wiring Harness (2) - Reposition
Retainer (1) @ Upper Intake Manifold Bracket (2) - Unclip [2x]
Upper Intake Manifold Cover Nut (1) - Remove [2x]
- Radiator Surge Tank Inlet Hose Clip (2) @ Upper Intake Manifold Bracket (3) - Remove
Upper Intake Manifold Cover Nut (1) - Remove [2x]
- Upper Intake Manifold Bracket (2) - Remove
Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Tube (1) - Remove - Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service
Disconnect the electrical connectors.
- Ignition Coil Bolt (1) - Remove [8x]
- Ignition Coil (2) - Remove [4x]
Electrical Connector (1) - Disconnect [2x]
- Retainer (2) - Unclip [5x]
- Engine Wiring Harness (3) - Reposition
- Positive Crankcase Ventilation Tube (4) - Disconnect - Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service
Retainer (1) - Unclip
Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Clamp (1) - Loosen [2x]
- Positive Crankcase Ventilation Tube (3) - Disconnect - Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service
Air Cleaner Outlet Duct (1) - Remove
- If replacing air cleaner outlet duct transfer parts as necessary.
Air Cleaner Bolt (1) - Remove
Air Cleaner Assembly (1) - Remove
Intake Manifold Cover Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]
- Disconnect the electrical connectors.
- Intake Air Pressure and Temperature Sensor (3)
- Throttle Body (4)
Wiring Harness Retainer (2) - Disconnect [2x]
- Reposition the engine wiring harness away from the intake manifold.
Radiator Surge Tank Inlet Hose Clip (3) - Remove [4x]
- Radiator Surge Tank Hose Clamp (1) - Disengage - Hose Clamp Replacement Guidelines - Spring Type
- Radiator Surge Tank Inlet Hose (2) - Remove
Wiring Harness Retainer (1) - Disconnect
Fuel Pump Shield Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]
- Fuel Pump Shield Bolt (2) - Remove [2x]
- Fuel Injection Pump Bracket (3) - Remove
- WARNING:
The noise cancelling foam component MUST be replaced if it has been exposed to engine fluids. Failure to replace the noise cancelling foam component that has been exposed to engine fluids may result in an engine fire resulting in catastrophic engine damage, and possible injury or death.
Fuel Pump Insulator (1) - Remove
Nut @ Fuel Feed Intermediate Pipe (1) - Loosen [2x]
Fuel Injection Fuel Feed Pipe Bracket Bolt (1) - Remove
- Fuel Feed Intermediate Pipe (2) - Remove and DISCARD
- Electrical Connector @ Fuel Pump - Disconnect
- CAUTION:
Alternately loosen the fuel pump bolts one turn at a time until the pump is fully disengaged from fuel pump lifter follower. Trying to remove the pump bolts without even side-to-side loosening may result in pump plunger damage
Fuel Pump Stud (1) - Remove [2x]

- Fuel Pump Seal (3) - Remove and DISCARD
- Valve Lifter Follower (4) - Remove
Retainer Spring (1) - Release

Place shop cloths beneath the radiator surge tank inlet hose connection points to absorb any potential coolant spillage.

Separate the engine coolant flow control valve (1) from the thermostat bypass hose and remove the engine coolant flow control valve.
- Engine Coolant Flow Control Valve Seal (2) - Remove and DISCARD
- WARNING:

Fuel Injection Fuel Rail Noise Shield (1) - Remove
Auxiliary Generator Battery Jumper Cable Terminal Nut (1) - Remove
- Auxiliary Generator Battery Jumper Cable (2) - Reposition away
- Retainer (3) - Disengage
Starter Stud (1) - Remove
- Starter Bolt (2) - Remove [2x]
- Reposition the starter to gain access to the electrical connections.
Battery Positive Cable Nut (1) @ Starter Solenoid - Remove
- Auxiliary Generator Battery Jumper Cable (2) - Remove
- Electrical Connector (4) - Disconnect
- Starter (3) - Remove
- CAUTION:
Refer to Heated Oxygen and Oxygen Sensor Caution .
CAUTION:The use of excessive force may damage the threads in the exhaust manifold/pipe.
NOTE:The heated oxygen sensor MAY be difficult to remove when the engine temperature is less than 48°C (120°F).
NOTE:The heated oxygen sensor in-line connector and louvered end MUST be kept clear of all grease, dirt, and other contaminants. Do NOT use cleaning solvents of any type. Do NOT drop or roughly handle the sensor.
Disconnect and reposition electrical connectors as necessary.
- Using the appropriate tool, remove the heated oxygen sensor (1).
Turbocharger Heat Shield Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]

Retainer Spring (1) - Release
- Charge Air Cooler Inlet Air Tube (2) @ Turbocharger (3) - Remove

- Use the EN-51007 Engine Support Fixture to raise the engine off the engine mount.
Engine Mount Bracket Bolt (1) - Remove and DISCARD [4x]

- Ensure the phenolic spacer remains in place.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
- Disconnect and reposition electrical connectors as necessary.
- Using the appropriate tool, remove the heated oxygen sensor (1).

Retainer (1) - Disconnect [3x]
- Electrical Connector (2) - Disconnect [2x]
- Reposition the front axle vent hose (3), and electrical harness (4).
- CAUTION:
The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) line is tamper resistant and must always be replaced once it is removed. The fittings connected to the PCV line must also be replaced if they are damaged when the PCV line is removed. To reduce the risk of damage to the fittings, use a suitable cutting tool and carefully cut the connections away.
NOTE:Disconnecting the tamper resistant connections will damage the positive crankcase ventilation tube, it must be replaced after removal.
Use a suitable tool to disconnect the 6 locking tabs at each tamper resistant connection.

Turbocharger Brace Nut (1) - Remove
- Turbocharger Bracket Bolt (2) - Remove [2x]
- Turbocharger Brace (3) - Remove
- Turbocharger Oil Feed Pipe Bolt (4) - Remove [4x]
Turbocharger Nut (1) - Remove and DISCARD [2x]
- Turbocharger Bolt (2) - Remove and DISCARD [2x]
Turbocharger Assembly (1) - Remove
- Turbocharger Gasket (2) - Remove and DISCARD
Turbocharger Oil Feed Pipe Bolt (1) @ Compressor Air Intake Turbocharger - Remove [2x]
- Turbocharger Oil Feed Pipe (2) - Remove
- Turbocharger Oil Return Pipe Gasket (3) - Remove and DISCARD
- Turbocharger Oil Feed Pipe Gasket (4) - Remove and DISCARD
- Turbocharger Oil Return Pipe Gasket (5) - Remove and DISCARD
Turbocharger Stud (1) - Remove and DISCARD [2x]
Use a suitable tool to rotate the drive belt tensioner (1) counterclockwise to relieve tension from the drive belt (2).
- Remove the drive belt (2) from the pulleys and tensioner (1).
- Slowly release tension on the drive belt tensioner (1).
- Clean and inspect the drive belt surfaces of all the pulleys.
Drive Belt Idler Pulley (2) - Remove
Drive Belt Tensioner Bolt (3) - Remove [2x]
- Drive Belt Tensioner (4) - Remove
Belt Idler Pulley (1) - Remove
- Ensure the phenolic spacer remains in place.
- Use the EN-51007 Engine Support Fixture to lower the right side of the engine onto the engine mount.
Engine Mount Bracket (1) - Install
- CAUTION:
Refer to Torque-to-Yield Fastener Caution .
Engine Mount Bracket Bolt (1) - Install and hand tighten [4x]
- Use the EN-51007 Engine Support Fixture to lower the engine onto the engine mount.
- Remove the engine support fixture. Engine Support Fixture
- NOTE:
The timing pin (3) is installed into the flexplate for engine timing procedures, it can be damaged if torque is applied to the flexplate with the timing pin engaged. The pin must be placed in the retracted position before torque is applied to the flexplate.
Set the timing pin feature in the retracted position from the engaged position by pulling back and twisting the handle (1) 90 degrees.
- Install the EN-52476 Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool (2) through the starter mounting hole.
- Install the slide (4) of the EN-52476 Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool.
Camshaft Carrier Bolt (2) - Remove
- Camshaft Cover Core Hole Plug (1) - Remove [2x]
- NOTE:
The EN-52462-A Camshaft Tool locking pins fit tightly into the camshafts. Rotate the engine in both directions in small increments using the crankshaft balancer bolt until the locking pins of the EN-52462-A Camshaft Tool (1) drop into the slots in the camshafts. Momentarily retract the timing pin of the EN-52476 Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool as necessary to seat the EN-52462-A Camshaft Tool locking pins. Ensure the EN-52476 Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool timing pin is re-engaged into the automatic transmission flex plate.
EN-52462-A Camshaft Tool (1) - Install
- Insert the EN-52462-A Camshaft Tool bolt (2) into the camshaft carrier and tighten to secure the tool to the camshaft carrier.
Crankshaft Balancer Bolt (1) - Remove and DISCARD
- Crankshaft Balancer (2) - Remove
Engine Front Cover Bolt (1) - Remove [10x]
- Engine Front Cover (2) - Remove and DISCARD
- The engine block sealing surface must be cleaned with low VOC brake clean, allow it to sit on the surface for several minutes to loosen the RTV. Use a plastic putty knife or plastic scraper to remove the old RTV. Once the RTV is removed, spray a second application of low VOC brake cleaner to the sealing surface on the engine block, wipe off with a clean lint free cloth. Wipe the new cover with low VOC brake clean on the sealing surface / bead path, then wipe it off with a clean lint free cloth.
- Clean out the engine front cover locating pin bores with low VOC brake clean and then dry them out with shop air.
- NOTE:
The timing pin (3) is installed into the flexplate for engine timing procedures, it can be damaged if torque is applied to the flexplate with the timing pin engaged. The pin must be placed in the retracted position before torque is applied to the flexplate.
Remove the slide (4) of the EN-52476 Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool (2) and install the timing pin (3) by releasing the handle (1).
Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]
- Camshaft Position Actuator Magnet (2) - Remove
- Camshaft Position Actuator Magnet Gasket (3) - Remove and DISCARD
Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]
- Camshaft Position Actuator Magnet (2) - Remove
- Camshaft Position Actuator Magnet Gasket (3) - Remove and DISCARD
Timing Chain Upper Cover Bolt (1) - Remove [9x]
- Timing Chain Upper Cover Bolt (2) - Remove
- Timing Chain Upper Cover (3) - Remove
- Timing Belt Front Upper Cover Seal (4) - Remove and DISCARD
Rotate both handles (4) of the EN-52462-A Camshaft Tool towards the rear of the engine.
- EN-52461-200 Adapter 675T of Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (2) - Install [2x]
- Install and tighten the two EN-52461-200 Adapter 675T of Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool bolts (3) enough to secure the EN-52461-200 Adapter 675T of Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (2) to the cylinder head.
EN-52461 Camshaft Actuator Holder (1) @ EN-52461-200 Adapter 675T of Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (2) - Install
- Install and tighten the 2 EN-52461 Camshaft Actuator Holder bolts (3).
Engage the tangs of the EN-52461 Camshaft Actuator Holder (1) to the intake and the exhaust camshaft position actuator slots.
- Tighten the EN-52461 Camshaft Actuator Holder bolts (2) to lock the actuators in place.
Loosen the camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolts (1).
- The camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolt (1) is loosened or removed.
- The EN-52461 Camshaft Actuator Holder bolts (2, 4) are loosened.
- Loosen the EN-52461 Camshaft Actuator Holder bolt (2) to un-lock the intake actuator.
- Loosen the EN-52461 Camshaft Actuator Holder bolt (4) to un-lock the exhaust actuator.
Remove timing chain tension from the camshaft position actuators and tighten the lower portion of the timing chain around the crankshaft sprocket.
- Use a wrench to turn the EN-52461 Camshaft Actuator Holder (1) counter-clockwise 6 N.m 53 lb in, then hold.
- Tighten the EN-52461 Camshaft Actuator Holder bolt (1) to lock the intake actuator securely in place.
- Remove the wrench from EN-52461 Camshaft Actuator Holder (1).
- Use a wrench to turn the EN-52461 Camshaft Actuator Holder (4) clockwise 6 N.m 53 lb in, then hold.
- Tighten the EN-52461 Camshaft Actuator Holder bolt (2) to lock the exhaust actuator securely in place.
- Remove the wrench from EN-52461 Camshaft Actuator Holder (4).
Relieve timing chain tension from the camshaft position actuators.
- The camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolt is loosened or removed.
- The EN-52461 Camshaft Actuator Holder bolts (2, 3) are loosened.
- Loosen the EN-52461 Camshaft Actuator Holder bolt (2) to release the intake actuator.
- Loosen the EN-52461 Camshaft Actuator Holder bolt (3) to release the exhaust actuator.
- NOTE:
Only remove the camshaft position actuator valve bolts that are defective, or as necessary to remove their corresponding actuators.
Remove the camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolts (1) and DISCARD.
- NOTE:
Hold the bottom of the actuator while disengaging the torque reaction tool to prevent the actuator from dropping.
Slide the barrel (2) of the torque reaction tool away from the actuators.
- Remove the exhaust camshaft position actuator (3) and the intake camshaft position actuator (4).
NOTE:Ensure the EN-52461 Camshaft Actuator Holder bolt (2) is tightened enough that EN-52461 Camshaft Actuator Holder (1) is firmly clamped and will not slip.
NOTE:Ensure the EN-52461 Camshaft Actuator Holder bolt (3) is tightened enough that EN-52461 Camshaft Actuator Holder (4) is firmly clamped and will not slip.
NOTE:Pressure must be applied towards the engine on the EN-52461 Camshaft Actuator Holder at points (1, 4) prior to and during any time the following two conditions are simultaneously met.
Timing Chain Tensioner Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]
- Timing Chain Tensioner (2) - Remove
- Timing Chain Tensioner Gasket (3) - Remove and DISCARD
- Timing Chain Guide Bolt (4) - Remove
- Timing Chain Guide (5) - Remove
Crankshaft Sprocket (3) - Remove
- Timing Chain Guide Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]
- Timing Chain Guide (2) - Remove
- Timing Chain (4) - Remove
Loosen the two bolts (3) of EN-52461-200 Adapter 675T of Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool.
- Remove EN-52461 Camshaft Actuator Holder (1).
Remove the two EN-52461-200 Adapter 675T of Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool bolts (3).
- EN-52461-200 Adapter 675T of Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool - Remove [2x]
Camshaft Cover Stud (1) - Remove
- Camshaft Cover Stud (2) - Remove [17x]
- Camshaft Cover Bolt (3) - Remove [4x]
- Camshaft Carrier (4) - Remove
- Camshaft Cover Gasket (5) - Remove and DISCARD
Electrical Connector (1) - Disconnect
- Fuel Injection Fuel Rail Bolt (2) - Remove [4x]
- Electrical Connector @ Knock Sensor - Disconnect [2x]
- CAUTION:
This vehicle is equipped with torque-to-yield or single use fasteners. Install a NEW torque-to-yield or single use fastener when installing this component. Failure to replace the torque-to-yield or single use fastener could cause damage to the vehicle or component.
CAUTION:After removal, place the cylinder head on 2 wood blocks in order to prevent damage to the sealing surfaces.
Cylinder Head Bolt (6) - Remove and DISCARD [2x]
- Cylinder Head Bolt (5) - Remove and DISCARD [3x]
- Cylinder Head Bolt (4) - Remove and DISCARD [3x]
- Cylinder Head Bolt (3) - Remove and DISCARD [10x]
- Cylinder Head (2) - Remove
- Cylinder Head Gasket (1) - Remove and DISCARD
- NOTE:
Use care to avoid contact with the fuel rail harness during special tool installation and fuel rail removal.
Install the EN-49248 Injector Rail Assembly Remover.
- Turn BOTH handles simultaneously, in small, even increments
- DO NOT twist the fuel injector fuel rail while removing.
- Turn both handles on the EN-49248 Injector Rail Assembly Remover to disengage the fuel injection fuel rail.
- Remove the EN-49248 Injector Rail Assembly Remover.
- Direct Fuel Injection Fuel Rail - Remove
Positive Crankcase Ventilation Oil Separator Bolt (1) - Remove [7x]
- Positive Crankcase Ventilation Oil Separator (2) - Remove
- Positive Crankcase Ventilation Oil Separator Gasket (3) - Remove and DISCARD
- CAUTION:
Use care in removing the fuel injectors in order to prevent damage to the fuel injector electrical connector pins or the fuel injector nozzles. Do not immerse the fuel injector in any type of cleaner. The fuel injector is an electrical component and may be damaged by this cleaning method.
Fuel Injector Retainer (1) - Remove and DISCARD [4x]
- Direct Fuel Injector (2) - Remove [4x]
- CAUTION:
Do not use a metal tool to remove O-rings, spacers or injector seals. Care must be taken not to scratch or damage the tubes of the injector.
Fuel Injector Bushing (4) - Remove and DISCARD [4x]
- Fuel Injector Seal (1) - Remove and DISCARD [4x]
- Fuel Injector Seal Spacer (2) - Remove and DISCARD [4x]
- Fuel Injector Nozzle Housing Seal (3) - Remove and DISCARD [8x]

Phenolic spacer must be present to prevent galvanic/corrosive reaction and/or excessive temperature conduction between engine mount bracket and engine mount. Replace mount if phenolic spacer is missing or damaged. Failure to ensure phenolic spacer is intact and not damaged can lead to premature failure of engine mount and/or engine mount bracket.
The heated oxygen sensor MAY be difficult to remove when the engine temperature is less than 48°C (120°F).
The heated oxygen sensor in-line connector and louvered end MUST be kept clear of all grease, dirt, and other contaminants. Do NOT use cleaning solvents of any type. Do NOT drop or roughly handle the sensor.
When removing, handling or installing this component wear protective gloves. The sharp edges on the component may be very sharp and may cause injury.

Use pry points to remove the timing chain upper cover.
Ensure the camshaft carrier and cylinder head face are clean and free from RTV prior to installing the EN-52461-200 Adapter 675T of Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool.
Hold the camshaft position actuator firmly and squarely during camshaft position actuator valve solenoid bolt removal/installation. Failure to do so may result in damage to the inside of the camshaft position actuator.
Pressure must be applied towards the engine on the EN-52461 Camshaft Actuator Holder at points (3) prior to and during any time the following two conditions are simultaneously met.
The timing chain tensioner plunger is spring loaded, hold the plunger in place as the tensioner is removed to prevent losing components of the timing chain tensioner.
