Cleaning and Inspection Procedure - Required
- WARNING:
Refer to Camshaft Position Actuator Removal and Installation Warning .
WARNING:Refer to Safety Glasses Warning .
Clean the camshaft position actuator (1) with cleaning solvent.
- Remove any dirt, debris, or restrictions within the oil passages (6).
- Dry the camshaft position actuator with compressed air.
- Insert a tie strap through the center of the camshaft position actuator and around the gear teeth to keep the components aligned.
- Inspect the camshaft position actuator for the following conditions:
- A broken spring (2)
- Damage to the timing sprocket teeth (3)
- Damage to the reluctor wheel (4)
- Damage to the center bore (5)
- Damage to the oil passages (6)
- If any of the above conditions exist, replace the camshaft position actuator.
- NOTE:
- The inspection procedure is provided for diagnostic purposes only.
- Do not use the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve bolt again. Install a NEW valve during assembly.
Inspect the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve bolt for the following conditions:
- Dirt, debris, restrictions or damage within the oil passages (1)
- Damaged threads (2)
If the threads of the valve are damaged, also inspect the threads in the front of the camshaft for damage.
- Dirt, debris, restrictions or damage within the oil inlet (3)
If debris is detected, the engine assembly should be inspected to determine the source of contamination.
- NOTE:
Do not soak or submerge the fuel pump in solvent.
Clean the fuel pump (2) and valve lifter follower (5).
- Dry the fuel pump and valve lifter follower with compressed air.
- Inspect the fuel pump for the following conditions:
- Damage to the connection ports (1)
- Damage to the electrical connector (2)
- Damage to the sealing surface (3)
- Damage to or a bent or binding plunger (7)
- Damage to the mounting holes (8)
- Inspect the valve lifter follower for the following conditions:
- A scored or worn fuel pump contact surface (4)
- A severely scuffed or worn body (5)
- Binding or roughness of the roller (6)
- If any of the above conditions exist, replace the fuel pump and/or the valve lifter follower.
- NOTE:
The guide pins in the retracted state will protrude approximately 5.05 mm (0.199 in) to 5.36 mm (0.211 in).
NOTE:Do not soak or submerge the camshaft profile actuator in solvent.
Clean the camshaft profile actuator (1) electrical connector and actuator pin of dirt, debris or contamination.
- Dry the camshaft profile actuator with compressed air.
- Inspect the camshaft profile actuator for the following conditions:
- Damage to the electrical connector (2)
- Damage to the sealing surface (3)
- Damage to the actuator pin (4)
- Damage to the mounting holes (5)
- If any of the above conditions exist, replace the camshaft profile actuator.
- NOTE:
Do not soak or submerge the camshaft position actuator magnet in solvent.
Clean the camshaft position actuator magnet electrical connector and mounting surface of dirt, debris or contamination.
- Dry the camshaft position actuator magnet with compressed air.
- Inspect the camshaft position actuator magnet for the following conditions:
- Damage to the sealing surface (1)
- Damage to the electrical connector (2)
- Damage to the mounting holes (3)
- Depress the valve (4) into the housing. The valve should move freely with no binding or sticking and minimal resistance inward.
- If any of the above conditions exist, replace the camshaft position actuator magnet.
Clean the camshaft in solvent.
- Dry the camshaft with compressed air.
- Inspect the camshaft oil feed holes (5) for dirt, debris or blockage.
- Inspect the threaded hole (6) for damage.
- Inspect the camshaft lobes (1, 3) and journals (2, 4) for the following conditions:
- Excessive scoring or pitting
- Discoloration from overheating
- Deformation from excessive wear, especially the camshaft lobes
- If any of the above conditions exist, replace the camshaft.
