Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2022 Cadillac CT4. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Clean all sealing surfaces.

    Crankshaft Front Seal (2) - Install NEW

  3. Crankshaft Sprocket (1) - Install

    Clean the engine block thread holes with a tap before the installation of the timing chain tensioner.

  5. Timing Chain Tensioner (1) - Install
  6. Timing Chain Tensioner Bolt (2) - Install [2x] - Fastener Specifications

    Timing Chain (1) - Reposition

    CAUTION:

    Hold the camshaft sprocket firmly and squarely during camshaft sprocket bolt removal/installation. Failure to do so may result in damage to the inside of the camshaft sprocket.

    Hold the intake camshaft sprocket (1) with hands from underneath the EN-52461  Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (3) and install the EN-52461 - 1  Holder into the intake camshaft sprocket to hold it securely before installing the camshaft sprocket bolt.

  9. Line up intake camshaft sprocket (1) with alignment marks, as you install them on chain and the housing which should of been done on removal.

    Hold the exhaust camshaft sprocket (1) with hands from underneath the EN-52461  Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (3) and install the EN-52461 - 1  Holder nto the exhaust camshaft sprocket to hold it securely before installing the camshaft sprocket bolt.

  11. Line up exhaust camshaft sprocket (1) with alignment marks, as you install them on chain and the housing which should of been done on removal.

    Lubricate the camshaft sprocket bolts (1) with clean engine oil where indicated. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

    Camshaft Sprocket Bolt (1) - Install NEW and hand tighten

    Check that the EN-52461 - 1  Holder (1) sits correctly in the hole of the camshaft sprocket.

  15. Rotate the EN-52461 - 1  Holder (1) counter clockwise.
  16. While holding the EN-52461 - 1  Holder (1) in the clockwise position to 6 N.m (53 lb in), tighten the bolt (4) just enough to hold the EN-52461 - 1  Holder in place.
  17. Intake Camshaft Sprocket Bolt (2) - Tighten - Fastener Specifications
  18. Check that the EN-52461 - 1  Holder (1) sits correctly in the hole of the exhaust camshaft sprocket.
  19. Rotate the EN-52461 - 1  Holder counter clockwise.
  20. While holding the EN-52461 - 1  Holder in the counter clockwise position 6 N.m (53 lb in), tighten the bolt (3) just enough to hold the EN-52461 - 1  Holder in place.
  21. Exhaust Camshaft Sprocket Bolt (2) - Tighten - Fastener Specifications

    Bolt (1, 2) - Loosen

  23. Slide the 2 EN-52461 - 1  Holder (3) out of the camshaft sprockets.

    Loosen the 2 bolts (1, 4) of EN-52461 - 100  Adapter Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (5).

  25. Remove the EN-52461  Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (5) along with the 2 EN-52461 - 100  Adapter Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (2, 3) from the engine.

    Remove the EN-52462 - A  Camshaft Tool (1) by rotating the levers in direction of arrows.

    Loosen and disengage the bolt (2) from EN-52462-A  Camshaft Alignment Tool (1).

    Clean and apply sealant to the camshaft cover opening plugs (1). Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

  30. Camshaft Cover Opening Plug (1) - Install and tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications

    Engine Wiring Harness (1) @ Camshaft Carrier - Install

  32. Install the 3 retaining clips.

    NOTE:
    • The timing chain upper cover sealing surface must be free of contamination prior to applying the sealer.
    • Install and align the timing chain upper cover to engine block within 10 minutes of applying the sealer.
    • The timing chain upper cover must be fastened to final torque specification within 15 minutes of applying the sealer.
    • Ensure proper use of room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealant. Use of Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) and Anaerobic Sealant

    Apply approximately a 5 mm (0.2 in) thick bead of sealant (2) on both sides between the camshaft housing and the cylinder head. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers .

  34. Check that the 2 Pins (1) are in the camshaft housing or in the timing chain upper cover.

    Timing Belt Front Upper Cover Seal (1) - Install NEW

  36. Timing Chain Upper Cover (2) - Install

    Timing Chain Upper Cover Bolt-M6 (3) - Install and tighten in sequence - Fastener Specifications

  38. Timing Chain Upper Cover Bolt -M5 (2) - Install and tighten in sequence [11x] - Fastener Specifications

    Camshaft Position Actuator Magnet Gasket (3) - Install NEW

  40. Camshaft Position Actuator Valve Solenoid (2) - Install
  41. Camshaft Position Actuator Valve Solenoid Bolt (1) - Install [2x] - Fastener Specifications

    Camshaft Position Actuator Magnet Gasket (3) - Install NEW

  43. Camshaft Position Actuator Valve Solenoid (2) - Install
  44. Camshaft Position Actuator Valve Solenoid Bolt (1) - Install [2x] - Fastener Specifications

    Engine Wiring Harness (3) - Reposition

  46. Retainer (1) @ Timing Chain Upper Cover (2) - Engage [6x]
  47. Connect the 2 electrical connectors to the camshaft position actuator valve solenoids.

    NOTE:
    • The engine front cover sealing surface must be free of contamination prior to applying the sealer.
    • Install and align the engine front cover to engine block within 10 minutes of applying the sealer.
    • The engine front lower cover must be fastened to final torque specification within 15 minutes of applying the sealer.
    • Ensure proper use of room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealant. Use of Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) and Anaerobic Sealant

    Apply approximately a 4 mm (0.16 in) thick bead of sealant (1) to the engine front cover. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

  50. Crankshaft Balancer Bolt - Remove and DISCARD

    Install EN-52440  Crankshaft Oil Seal Ring Guide Front (2) to the crankshaft.

  52. Install the engine front cover (1) backwards using the 2 tabs to size the seal.

    Remove the engine front cover (1) after seal is sized.

  55. Engine Front Cover (1) - Install
  56. Remove the EN-52440  Crankshaft Oil Seal Ring Guide Front (3).
  57. Remove the EN-52483  Guide Pins (2).
  58. Engine Front Cover Bolt (1) - Install and tighten in sequence [9x] - Fastener Specifications
  59. Raise and support the vehicle. Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle

    NOTE:

    The timing pin (3) is installed into the flexplate for engine timing procedures, it can be damaged if torque is applied to the flexplate with the timing pin engaged. The timing pin must be placed in the retracted position using the handle (1) and twisting to locked position. The slide part (4) to be installed to the flex plate when torque is applied to the flexplate or crankshaft balancer bolt.

    Retract the timing pin (3) using the handle (1) of the EN-52476  Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool (2).

  61. Ensure to engage the slide (4) of the EN-52476  Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool (2) into the automatic transmission flexplate.
  62. Lower the vehicle.

    Crankshaft Balancer (2) - Install

  64. Crankshaft Balancer Bolt (1) - Install NEW and tighten - Fastener Specifications

    Accessory Drive Primary Belt (1) - Install

    Use a suitable tool to rotate the drive belt tensioner (1) counterclockwise and hold.

  67. Slowly release tension on the drive belt tensioner.
  68. Raise and support the vehicle. Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle

    NOTE:

    The timing pin (3) is installed into the flexplate for engine timing procedures, it can be damaged if torque is applied to the flexplate with the timing pin engaged. The timing pin must be placed in the retracted position using the handle (1) and twisting to locked position. The slide part (4) to be installed to the flex plate when torque is applied to the flexplate or crankshaft balancer bolt.

    EN-52476  Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool (2) - Remove

    Starter (3) - Install

  71. Starter Bolt (2) - Install and tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications
  72. Starter Stud (1) - Install and tighten - Fastener Specifications

    Auxiliary Generator Battery Jumper Cable (2) - Install

  74. Battery Positive Cable Nut (1) @ Starter Solenoid - Install and tighten - Fastener Specifications

    Electrical Connector (1) - Connect

    Auxiliary Generator Battery Jumper Cable (3) - Install

  77. Battery Negative Cable Nut (1) @ Starter Stud - Install and tighten - Fastener Specifications
  78. Engine Wiring Harness Retainer (2) - Engage [2x]
  79. Lower the vehicle.

    Oil Level Indicator Tube Seal (2) - Install NEW

  81. Oil Level Indicator Tube (1) - Install

    Oil Level Indicator Tube Bracket Bolt (2) - Install and tighten - Fastener Specifications

  83. Electrical Connector (1) @ Oil Level Indicator Tube (3) - Clip

    Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Tube (2) - Install

  87. Connect the quick disconnects (1) and install the retainer (3). Plastic Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service

    Intake Manifold Cover (1) @ Upper Intake Manifold Bracket (2) - Install

    NOTE:

    Ensure the engine sight shield retainers fully engage the intake manifold cover studs.

    Push down on the front of the intake manifold cover (1).

  90. Fill the engine oil to the proper level with NEW engine oil. Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement (RWD) , or Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement (AWD)
  91. Install the oil fill cap.
  92. Connect the battery. Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
  93. Perform the engine oil life reset. GM Oil Life System Resetting (With Scan Tool) , or GM Oil Life System Resetting (Without Scan Tool)
  94. Check for leaks.
