Rattle, Clunk, Pop or Shudder Noise from the Power Steering System

Condition Action
Verify the customer complaint Test the vehicle on a shop hoist or road test.
It may be necessary to compare to a like vehicle to determine if an issue is present.
DTCs are present Confirm and repair the condition that set DTC. Diagnostic Starting Point - Vehicle
Loose, worn or damaged outer tie rod ends. Inspect the outer tie rods. Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Inspection 
Loose, worn or damaged inner tie rod ends. Inspect the inner tie rods. Steering Linkage Inner Tie Rod Inspection 
Loose, worn or damaged ball joints. Inspect the ball joints. Front Ball Joint Inspection
Loose, worn or damaged intermediate steering shaft. Replace the intermediate steering shaft. Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement (RWD without Blackwing) , or Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement (AWD) , or Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement (RWD with Blackwing)
Loose, worn, fluid leaks or damaged electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear bushings. Replace the electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear. Electric Belt Drive Rack and Pinion Steering Gear Replacement (AWD) , or Electric Belt Drive Rack and Pinion Steering Gear Replacement (RWD without Blackwing) , or Electric Belt Drive Rack and Pinion Steering Gear Replacement (with Blackwing) 
Noise at the steering column. Inspect fasteners and tighten, if necessary. Steering Column Replacement (with N37) , or Steering Column Replacement (with N38)
Replace the steering column. Steering Column Replacement (with N37) , or Steering Column Replacement (with N38)
Noise at the electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear. Inspect fasteners and tighten, if necessary. Fastener Specifications 
Noise at the electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear. With the intermediate shaft disconnected, use a wrench to rotate the steering gear input shaft from the left of center to the right of center. If the power steering assist motor damage is identified, replace the power steering assist motor. Power Steering Assist Motor Replacement (AWD) , or Power Steering Assist Motor Replacement (RWD without Blackwing) , or Power Steering Assist Motor Replacement (with Blackwing) 
Noise at the electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear. With the intermediate shaft disconnected, use a wrench to rotate the steering gear input shaft from the left of center to the right of center. If the electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear is worn or damaged, replace the electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear. Electric Belt Drive Rack and Pinion Steering Gear Replacement (AWD) , or Electric Belt Drive Rack and Pinion Steering Gear Replacement (RWD without Blackwing) , or Electric Belt Drive Rack and Pinion Steering Gear Replacement (with Blackwing) 
Noise at the steering gear boots. Replace the steering gear boot. Steering Gear Boot Replacement (without Blackwing) , or Steering Gear Boot Replacement (with Blackwing) 
Noise in the front wheel drive shaft inner joint or boot. Replace the affected front wheel drive half shaft.
Noise in the front wheel drive shaft outer joint or boot. Replace the affected front wheel drive half shaft.
