Removal Procedure
- Engine - Remove - Engine Replacement (RWD) , or Engine Replacement (AWD)
Ignition Coil Bolt (1) - Remove [8x]
- Ignition Coil (2) - Remove [4x]
- NOTE:
The timing pin (3) is installed into the flexplate for engine timing procedures, it can be damaged if torque is applied to the flexplate with the timing pin engaged. The timing pin must be placed in the retracted position using the handle (1) and twisting to locked position. The slide part (4) to be installed to the flexplate when torque is applied to the flexplate or crankshaft balancer bolt.
Install the slide (4) from the EN-52476 Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool (1) to the automatic transmission flexplate.
- Crankshaft Balancer Bolt (2) - Loosen
Crankshaft Balancer Bolt (1) - Remove and DISCARD
- Crankshaft Balancer (2) - Remove
Camshaft Position Actuator Valve Solenoid Bolt (4) - Remove [4x]
- Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Solenoid (1, 3) - Remove [2x]
- Camshaft Position Actuator Magnet Gasket (2) - Remove and DISCARD [2x]
Timing Chain Upper Cover Bolt-M6 (3) - Remove
- Timing Chain Upper Cover Bolt- M5 (2) - Remove [11x]
Timing Chain Upper Cover (2) - Remove
- Timing Chain Upper Cover Seal (1) - Remove and DISCARD
Engine Front Cover Bolt (1) - Remove [9x]
- Engine Front Cover (2) - Remove and DISCARD
Mark (1) both actuator sprockets, timing chain, and the camshaft housing cover from the center of the bolt upward as shown with a paint marker or equivalent to help with installation.
Camshaft Cover Opening Plug (1) - Remove [2x]
- Camshaft Carrier Bolt-M8 (2) - Remove
Install EN-52462 - A Camshaft Tool (1).
If the engine timing is set correctly, the pins of EN-52462 - A Camshaft Tool (1) will seat in the holes of the camshaft carrier to ensure the camshafts remain in the time position.
- The EN-52462 - A Camshaft Tool (1) will be flush against the camshaft carrier.
- Lock the EN-52462 - A Camshaft Tool (1) with bolt (2).
- If the EN-52462 - A Camshaft Tool (1) does not fix in the hole of camshaft. Rotate engine back and forth till EN-52462 - A Camshaft Tool seats completely into camshaft properly.
- The EN-52462 - A Camshaft Tool (1) will be flush against the camshaft carrier.
- Lock the EN-52462 - A Camshaft Tool (1) with bolt (2).
Lock the EN-52462 - A Camshaft Tool (1) by rotating the levers in direction of arrow.
Install the EN-52461 Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (2) to the 2 EN-52461 - 100 Adapter Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (3).
- Hand tighten the 2 bolts (1, 4) of EN-52461 Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool.
Install the EN-52461 Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (5) along with the 2 EN-52461 Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (2, 3) to the camshaft carrier.
- Tighten the 2 bolts (1, 4) of EN-52461 - 100 Adapter Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool.
- Tighten the 2 bolts from the EN-52461 Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool to the 2 EN-52461 Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool that were hand tightened.
Install the EN-52461 - 1 Holder (1) to the holes in the camshaft sprocket.
- Check that the EN-52461 - 1 Holder (1) sits correctly in the hole of the camshaft sprocket.
- To take tension of the actuators and loosen timing chain. Turn the exhaust side counter clockwise to 6 N.m (53 lb in) and tighten bolt (3) just enough to hold the EN-52461 - 1 Holder (1) in place.
- Turn the intake side counter clockwise to 6 N.m (53 lb in) and tighten bolt (4) just enough to hold the EN-52461 - 1 Holder (1) in place.
Camshaft Sprocket Bolt (1) - Remove and DISCARD [2x]
Bolt (3, 4) - Loosen [2x]
- CAUTION:
Hold the camshaft sprocket firmly and squarely during camshaft sprocket bolt removal/installation. Failure to do so may result in damage to the inside of the camshaft sprocket.
Hold the intake camshaft sprocket with hand from underneath the EN-52461 Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool and pull out the EN-52461 - 1 Holder and the intake camshaft sprocket will drop down in hand so you can remove it. (1)
- CAUTION:
Hold the camshaft sprocket firmly and squarely during camshaft sprocket bolt removal/installation. Failure to do so may result in damage to the inside of the camshaft sprocket.
- Hold the exhaust camshaft sprocket with hand from underneath the EN-52461 Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool and pull out the EN-52461 - 1 Holder and the exhaust camshaft sprocket will drop down in hand so you can remove it. (1)
Loosen the 2 bolts (1, 4) of EN-52461 - 100 Adapter Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool.
- Remove the EN-52461 Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (5) along with the 2 EN-52461 - 100 Adapter Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (2, 3) from the engine.
Timing Chain (1) - Remove
Timing Chain Guide Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]
- Timing Chain Guide (2) - Remove
Timing Chain Tensioner Shoe Bolt (1) - Remove and DISCARD
- Timing Chain Tensioner Shoe (2) - Remove
Timing Chain Tensioner Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]
- Timing Chain Tensioner (2) - Remove
Disconnect harness retainers as needed.
- Radiator Surge Tank Outlet Hose Clip Bracket Nut - Remove [2x]
- Radiator Surge Tank Inlet Pipe Bracket - Remove [2x]
Retainer (1) - Unclip [5x]
- Engine Wiring Harness (2) - Reposition away
Engine Wiring Harness Conduit Bracket Bolt (1) - Remove
- Engine Wiring Harness Conduit Nut (2) - Remove
- Engine Wiring Harness Bracket (3) - Remove
Electrical Connector (1) @ Turbocharger Bypass Valve Solenoid (2) - Disconnect
Electrical Connector (1) @ Turbocharger Wastegate Actuator - Disconnect
- Engine Wiring Harness Retainer (2) @ Turbocharger Coolant Feed and Return Pipe - Remove [2x]
Turbocharger Coolant Feed and Return Pipe Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]
- Turbocharger Coolant Feed Hose Clamp (2) - Disengage [2x] - Hose Clamp Replacement Guidelines - Spring Type
Turbocharger Coolant Feed and Return Pipe Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]
Turbocharger Coolant Feed and Return Pipe (1) - Remove
- Turbocharger Coolant Feed and Return Pipe Gasket (2) - Remove and DISCARD
Wiring Harness Clip (4) @ Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Pump Bracket - Unclip
- Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Pump Bolt (1, 3) - Remove [3x]
- Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Pump (2) - Remove
Intake Manifold Bolt (3) - Remove [7x]
- Remove the intake manifold and throttle body as and assembly (2).
- Remove and DISCARD the intake manifold seal (1).
Thermostat Bypass Pipe Bolt (2) - Remove [2x]
- Thermostat Bypass Pipe (1) - Remove
Engine Coolant Heater Exhaust Pipe Bracket Bolt (2) - Remove
- Clamp (1) - Remove - Hose Clamp Replacement Guidelines - Spring Type
Position the sleeve (2) aside.
- Disconnect the electrical connector. (1)
- Engine Coolant Heater Exhaust Pipe Bolt (3, 4) - Remove [3x]
Engine Coolant Heater Exhaust Pipe (1) - Remove
- Engine Coolant Manifold Gasket (2) - Remove and DISCARD
Engine Coolant Air Bleed Pipe Bolt (1) - Remove
- Clamp (4) - Remove - Hose Clamp Replacement Guidelines - Spring Type
- Engine Coolant Air Bleed Pipe (2) @ Engine Coolant Flow Control Valve (3) - Remove
Engine Coolant Air Bleed Pipe Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]
Engine Coolant Air Bleed Pipe (1) - Remove
- Turbocharger Oil Feed Pipe Gasket (2) - Remove and DISCARD
Engine Coolant Flow Control Valve Bolt (1) - Remove [4x]
Engine Coolant Flow Control Valve (1) - Remove
- Water Outlet Seal (2) - Remove and DISCARD
Fuel Pump Cover (2) - Remove
- Fuel Pump Shield Bolt (1) - Remove
- WARNING:
The noise cancelling foam component MUST be replaced if it has been exposed to engine fluids. Failure to replace the noise cancelling foam component that has been exposed to engine fluids may result in an engine fire resulting in catastrophic engine damage, and possible injury or death.
Fuel Pump Insulator (1) - Remove
Fuel Feed Intermediate Pipe Bracket Bolt (3) - Remove
- Fuel Feed Intermediate Pipe Nut (1, 4) - Loosen -.
- Fuel Feed Intermediate Pipe (2) - Remove and DISCARD
- CAUTION:
Alternately loosen the fuel pump bolts one turn at a time until the pump is fully disengaged from fuel pump lifter follower. Trying to remove the pump bolts without even side-to-side loosening may result in pump plunger damage
Fuel Pump Bolt (4) - Remove [2x]
- Fuel Pump (1) - Remove
- Fuel Pump Seal (3) - Remove and DISCARD
- Valve Lifter Follower (2) - Remove
Remove the compressor air intake turbocharger and lines as an assembly.
- Remove the 2 oil feed pipe bolts (4).
- Remove the oil feed pipe bolt (5).
- Remove and DISCARD the 4 turbocharger bolt (2).
- Remove the compressor air intake turbocharger (3).
- Remove and DISCARD the turbocharger heat shield (1).
- Remove and DISCARD the turbocharger oil feed pipe gasket (7).
- Remove and DISCARD the turbocharger oil return pipe seal (6).
Camshaft Cover Stud (1) - Remove [14x]
- Camshaft Carrier Bolt-M6 [4x](2) - Remove
- Camshaft Carrier Bolt-M8 [4x](3) - Remove
Camshaft Carrier (1) - Remove
- Camshaft Cover Gasket (2) - Remove and DISCARD

Loosen the bolts in the sequence shown.
Cylinder Head Bolt-M6 (1, 2, 3) - Remove [8x]
Cylinder Head Bolt-M8 (1) - Remove and DISCARD [10x]
- Cylinder Head (2) - Remove
- Cylinder Head Gasket (3) - Remove and DISCARD
Crankshaft Position Sensor Bolt (2) - Remove
- Crankshaft Position Sensor (1) - Remove
Automatic Transmission Flex Plate Bolt (2) - Remove and DISCARD [8x]
- Automatic Transmission Flex Plate (1) - Remove
- NOTE:

EN-52476 Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool (2) - Remove
Crankshaft Position Sensor Inner Exciter Ring (1) - Remove
- Flip engine over on stand.
Lower Oil Pan Bolt (1) - Remove [18x]
Install the 2 lower oil pan bolts (1, 2) to the jack screw holes to aid in removal of the lower oil pan.
- NOTE:
Ensure that the pins (3, 4) from the lower oil pan do not get damaged while loosening.
Loosen the lower oil pan (2) using a suitable flat bladed tool (1).
Remove the 2 lower oil pan bolts (1, 2).
Lower Oil Pan (1) - Remove
Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Housing Bolt (1) - Remove [13x]
- Loosen the crankshaft rear oil seal housing carefully from the engine block, use a suitable tool to pry all the way around.
- Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Housing (2) - Remove and DISCARD
Bolt (2) - Remove [2x]
- Balancer Chain Tensioner (1) - Remove
- Reset the tensioner and install the EN-955-A Locking Pin for installation.
Balance Chain Guide Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]
- Balancer Chain Guide (2) - Remove
Hold on the balance shaft sprocket (1) with a suitable wrench to loose the balance shaft sprocket bolt (2).
- Balance Shaft Sprocket Bolt (2) - Remove and DISCARD
Balance Chain (1) - Remove
- Balance Shaft Sprocket (2) - Remove
- NOTE:
Take note that there are different bolt lengths.
Engine Block Lower Structural Extension Outer Bolts (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) - Remove [15x]
- NOTE:
Take note that there are different bolt lengths.
Engine Block Lower Structural Extension Inner Bolts (1, 2, 3) - Remove [3x]
Loosen the engine block lower structural extension carefully from the engine block, use a suitable tool at the location as shown to pry (1, 2, 3).
Engine Block Lower Structural Extension (1) - Remove
- NOTE:
- Lay the lower bearings and the caps aside in the order they were removed.
- The connecting rod caps must remain with the original connecting rod. The caps must be oriented identical to original installation.
Remove and DISCARD the 4 connecting rod bolts (3) from the cylinder 2 and the cylinder 3.
- Remove the 2 connecting rod bearing caps (2) from the cylinder 2 and the cylinder 3.
- Remove the 2 connecting rod lower bearings (1).
- Install the EN-51454 Guide Pins into the connecting rod bolt hole.
- Using EN-51454 Guide Pins, push the connecting rod and piston through the top of the cylinder. DO NOT scratch the crankshaft journal or cylinder wall and DO NOT damage the oil jets when removing the connecting rod and piston.
- NOTE:
Lay the piston and the upper bearings aside in the order they were removed.
Remove the 2 connecting rod upper bearings (2) from the 2 connecting rods.
- Turn the crankshaft 180 degrees.
- NOTE:
- The shear surfaces of the connecting rod and the connecting rod bearing cap form a unique fit and must not be swapped or damaged. Do not lay down on the shear surfaces.
- Lay the lower bearings and the caps aside in the order they were removed.
Remove and DISCARD the 4 connecting rod bolts (3) from the cylinder 1 and the cylinder 4.
- Remove the 2 connecting rod bearing caps (2) from the cylinder 1 and the cylinder 4.
- Remove the 2 connecting rod lower bearings (1).
- Install the EN-51454 Guide Pins into the connecting rod bolt hole.
- Using EN-51454 Guide Pins, push the connecting rod and piston through the top of the cylinder. DO NOT scratch the crankshaft journal or cylinder wall and DO NOT damage the oil jets when removing the connecting rod and piston.
- NOTE:
Lay the piston and the upper bearings aside in the order they were removed.
Remove the 2 connecting rod upper bearings (2) from the 2 connecting rods.
- NOTE:
Set aside in order removed.
Crankshaft Bearing Cap Bolt (1) - Remove and DISCARD [10x]
- Crankshaft Bearing Cap (2) - Remove [5x]
- NOTE:
- Note the position of the guide lug (1) for the installation procedure.
- Mark the installation position of the crankshaft lower bearing. Set aside in order removed.
Crankshaft Lower Bearing (2) - Remove [5x]
- NOTE:
Mark the installation position of the crankshaft upper bearings and the thrust bearings. Set aside in order removed.
Crankshaft (1) - Remove
- Crankshaft Upper Bearing (3) - Remove [5x]
- Remove the 2 crankshaft thrust bearings (2).
It is likely you will bend the housing during removal. Use care to not damage the engine block.
