  1. GM5900067

Using the DT-52923  Input Shaft Seal Installer (2), install the NEW differential drive pinion gear seal (1).

  2. Apply a small amount of lubricant to the splines of the rear wheel drive shaft flange. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
  3. GM5900058

Position the rear wheel drive shaft flange (1) on the pinion shaft, ensuring the alignment marks are aligned.

  4. Using a brass hammer, tap the flange on the drive pinion shaft.
  5. GM5900016

If NEW threaded components are being installed, loosen the adhesive using a metal pick or similar tool before proceeding. If threaded components are reused, prepare the threaded components using the following steps:

    1. Remove any loose cured adhesive from the external threads of the components using a lint free cloth.
    2. Thread the cleaned components into the internal mating threads and remove to loosen trapped cured adhesive.
    3. Remove loose debris from internal and external threads using compressed air.
    4. Apply liquid thread locking adhesive in a strip along half of the length of the external threads, starting at the tip, just prior to installation. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
  6. Install the NEW differential drive pinion gear nut (1).
  7. GM5900014

Using the DT-45012  Pinion Flange Holder (1) and breaker bar with the proper size socket, tighten the NEW differential drive pinion gear nut (2) until the pinion end play is just taken up.

  8. Frequently rotate the pinion while tightening the differential drive pinion gear nut to seat the bearings.
  9. CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution .

    NOTE:

Compare this measurement with the rotating torque recorded during removal.

  10. Measure the rotating torque of the pinion using an in-pound torque wrench. Continue tightening the differential drive pinion gear nut (2) until specified rotating torque is obtained. Fastener Specifications
  11. Once the specified torque is obtained, rotate the pinion several times to ensure the bearings have seated. Recheck the rotating torque and adjust if necessary.
  12. Remove the DT-45012  Pinion Flange Holder (1).
  13. GM5896793

Install the rear wheel drive shaft (1) onto the rear axle shaft.
