Installation Procedure

  1. GM5372666

    Differential Carrier Assembly (1) - Install

  2. GM5372665

    Differential Carrier Rear Bolt (1) - Install NEW [2x]

  3. Differential Carrier Nut (2) - Install NEW [2x]
    4. CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution .

    CAUTION:

    Refer to Torque-to-Yield Fastener Caution .

  4. Differential Carrier Rear Bolt (1) - Tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications

    CAUTION:

    Refer to Torque-to-Yield Fastener Caution .

    Differential Carrier Rear Bolt (1) - Install NEW and tighten - Fastener Specifications

  6. Remove the jack from under the differential carrier assembly.
  7. Connect the electrical connector at the differential.

    Install the rear wheel drive shaft (1) onto the rear axle shaft.

    NOTE:

    The rear wheel drive shaft universal joint retainer (2) and washers (1) are serviced as a rear wheel drive shaft universal joint retainer kit consisting of 2 bolts and 1 washer.

    If NEW threaded components are being installed, loosen the adhesive using a metal pick or similar tool before proceeding. If threaded components are reused, prepare the threaded components using the following steps:

    1. Remove any loose cured adhesive from the external threads of the components using a lint free cloth.
    2. Thread the cleaned components into the internal mating threads and remove to loosen trapped cured adhesive.
    3. Remove loose debris from internal and external threads using compressed air.
    4. Apply liquid thread locking adhesive in a strip along half of the length of the external threads, starting at the tip, just prior to installation. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
  10. Install 3 NEW rear wheel drive shaft flange washers (1).
    11. CAUTION:

    Refer to Torque-to-Yield Fastener Caution .

  11. Install and tighten the 6 NEW rear wheel drive shaft universal joint retainers (2) in a crisscross pattern. Fastener Specifications

    Install the rear wheel drive shaft (1) onto the rear axle shaft.

    NOTE:

    The rear wheel drive shaft universal joint retainer (1) and washers (2) are serviced as a rear wheel drive shaft universal joint retainer kit consisting of 2 bolts and 1 washer.

    If NEW threaded components are being installed, loosen the adhesive using a metal pick or similar tool before proceeding. If threaded components are reused, prepare the threaded components using the following steps:

    1. Remove any loose cured adhesive from the external threads of the components using a lint free cloth.
    2. Thread the cleaned components into the internal mating threads and remove to loosen trapped cured adhesive.
    3. Remove loose debris from internal and external threads using compressed air.

  14. Install 3 NEW rear wheel drive shaft flange washers (2).
    15. CAUTION:

    Refer to Torque-to-Yield Fastener Caution .

  15. Install and tighten the 6 NEW rear wheel drive shaft universal joint retainers (1) in a crisscross pattern. Fastener Specifications

    Install the propeller shaft (1) in the vehicle.

    If NEW threaded components are being installed, loosen the adhesive using a metal pick or similar tool before proceeding. If threaded components are reused, prepare the threaded components using the following steps:

    1. Remove any loose cured adhesive from the external threads of the components using a lint free cloth.
    2. Thread the cleaned components into the internal mating threads and remove to loosen trapped cured adhesive.
    3. Apply thread locking adhesive to the external threads of the components. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
    4. Apply liquid thread locking adhesive in a strip along half of the length of the external threads, starting at the tip, just prior to installation.
  18. Install the 2 propeller shaft bearing support bolts (1) and tighten. Fastener Specifications

    Align the reference mark (3) between the propeller shaft flange (1) and the rear axle pinion flange (2).

    If NEW threaded components are being installed, loosen the adhesive using a metal pick or similar tool before proceeding. If threaded components are reused, prepare the threaded components using the following steps:

    1. Remove any loose cured adhesive from the external threads of the components using a lint free cloth.
    2. Thread the cleaned components into the internal mating threads and remove to loosen trapped cured adhesive.
    3. Apply thread locking adhesive to the external threads of the components. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
    4. Apply liquid thread locking adhesive in a strip along half of the length of the external threads, starting at the tip, just prior to installation.
  21. Install the 3 rear propeller shaft nuts (2) and 3 the rear propeller shaft bolts (1).
  22. Tighten the 3 the rear propeller shaft bolts (1). Fastener Specifications

    Align the reference mark (2) between the propeller shaft flange (3) and the output flange (1) of the transmission.

    If NEW threaded components are being installed, loosen the adhesive using a metal pick or similar tool before proceeding. If threaded components are reused, prepare the threaded components using the following steps:

    1. Remove any loose cured adhesive from the external threads of the components using a lint free cloth.
    2. Thread the cleaned components into the internal mating threads and remove to loosen trapped cured adhesive.
    3. Apply thread locking adhesive to the external threads of the components. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
    4. Apply liquid thread locking adhesive in a strip along half of the length of the external threads, starting at the tip, just prior to installation.
  25. Install the 3 front propeller shaft nuts (1) and the 3 front propeller shaft bolts (2).
  26. Tighten the 3 front propeller shaft bolts (1). Fastener Specifications

    Floor Panel Number 2 Cross Bar Reinforcement (1) - Install

  28. Floor Panel Number 2 Cross Bar Reinforcement Bolt (2) - Install and tighten [4x] - Fastener Specifications

    Exhaust Intermediate Underbody Heat Shield (2) - Install

  30. Exhaust Heat Shield Bolt (1) - Install and tighten [6x] - Fastener Specifications

    Transmission Fluid Cooler Pipe (1) - Install

    Engage the transmission fluid cooler pipe retaining clip (1) [2x].

  41. With the aid of an assistant, install the exhaust muffler (1).

    Catalytic Converter Nut (1) - Install and tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications

    Underbody Front Air Deflector- Left Side (5) - Install

  54. Underbody Rear Air Deflector Bolt- Left Side (4) - Install and tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications
  55. Transmission Fluid Cooler Pipe Bracket Bolt- Left Side (3) - Install and tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications
  56. Underbody Front Air Deflector Nut- Left Side (2) - Install and tighten [5x] - Fastener Specifications
  57. Underbody Front Air Deflector Bolt- Left Side (1) - Install and tighten [6x] - Fastener Specifications

    Underbody Front Air Deflector- Right Side (5) - Install

  59. Underbody Rear Air Deflector Bolt- Right Side (4) - Install and tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications
  60. Transmission Fluid Cooler Pipe Bracket Bolt- Right Side (3) - Install and tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications
  61. Underbody Front Air Deflector Nut- Right Side (2) - Install and tighten [5x] - Fastener Specifications
  62. Underbody Front Air Deflector Bolt- Right Side (1) - Install and tighten [6x] - Fastener Specifications

    Underbody Rear Air Deflector- Right Side (5) - Install

  64. Underbody Rear Air Deflector Nut (3) - Install and tighten [3x] - Fastener Specifications
  65. Underbody Rear Air Deflector Bolt (2) - Install and tighten [3x] - Fastener Specifications
  66. Underbody Rear Air Deflector Nut (4) - Install and tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications
  67. Rear Wheelhouse Liner Bolt (1) - Install and tighten - Fastener Specifications

    Rear Tire Front Air Deflector- Right Side (1) - Install

  69. Rear Tire Front Air Deflector Bolt (2) - Install and tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications

    Underbody Rear Air Deflector- Left Side (5) - Install

  71. Underbody Rear Air Deflector Nut (2) - Install and tighten [3x] - Fastener Specifications
  72. Underbody Rear Air Deflector Bolt (3) - Install and tighten [3x] - Fastener Specifications
  73. Underbody Rear Air Deflector Nut (4) - Install and tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications
  74. Rear Wheelhouse Liner Bolt (1) - Install and tighten - Fastener Specifications

    Rear Tire Front Air Deflector- Left Side (2) - Install

  76. Rear Tire Front Air Deflector Bolt (1) - Install and tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications

    CAUTION:

    Refer to Component Fastener Tightening Caution .

    Differential Carrier Drain Plug (2) - Install and tighten - Fastener Specifications

  78. Fill the differential carrier with axle lubricant.
  79. Check the differential fluid level. It should be even with the bottom of the fill plug hole to no lower than 2 mm (0.08 in) below the opening.

    Differential Carrier Fill Plug (1) - Install and tighten - Fastener Specifications

  81. Remove the drain pan.
  82. Inspect the exhaust system for leaks.
  83. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
  84. Check the transmission fluid level. Transmission Fluid Level and Condition Check
  85. Inspect for transmission fluid leaks. Fluid Leak Diagnosis
