Cleaning and Inspection Procedure
- Clean the fuel injector bores.
- Clean and inspect the fuel rail components intended to be reused. Use the following procedure to:
- Disassemble the fuel injection fuel rail
- Clean and Inspect each component of the fuel rail
- Assemble and prepare the fuel injection fuel rail to be installed
Fuel Injector Wiring Harness Strap (1) - Remove and DISCARD [3x]
- Electrical Connector @ Fuel Injector Wiring Harness - Disconnect [5x]
- Fuel Injector Wiring Harness (2) - Remove
- CAUTION:
Use care in removing the fuel injectors in order to prevent damage to the fuel injector electrical connector pins or the fuel injector nozzles. Do not immerse the fuel injector in any type of cleaner. The fuel injector is an electrical component and may be damaged by this cleaning method.
Fuel Injector Retainer (1) - Remove and DISCARD
- Direct Fuel Injector (2) - Remove [4x]
- CAUTION:
Do not use a metal tool to remove O-rings, spacers or injector seals. Care must be taken not to scratch or damage the tubes of the injector.
Fuel Injector Bushing (4) - Remove and DISCARD [4x]
- Fuel Injector Seal (1) - Remove and DISCARD [4x]
- Fuel Injector Seal Spacer (2) - Remove and DISCARD [4x]
- Fuel Injector Nozzle Housing Seal (3) - Remove and DISCARD [8x]
- NOTE:
DO NOT apply force to the plastic housing of the sensor. Apply force only at the attached hexagon when loosening or tightening the sensor.
Remove the fuel pressure sensor (1) from fuel rail.
- Clean the exterior of the fuel rail (1) with a clean cloth and solvent.
Inspect the fuel rail and components for the following conditions:
- Damage, debris or restrictions to the fuel rail
- Damage, debris or restrictions to the fuel ports in the fuel rail
- Damage to the mounting area for the fuel rail
- Damage to the fuel rail mounting bolts or mounting bolt grommets/isolators
- Damage to the threads on the fuel rail feed fitting
- Damage to the threads in the fuel pressure sensor bore
- Damage to the fuel pressure sensor connector, threads, or sealing face
- NOTE:
Ensure that the fuel rail threads are clean and free of any excess fuel or the fuel injection fuel rail fuel pressure sensor will NOT seal properly.
Lubricate the threads and the sealing area in the fuel rail with one drop of clean engine oil. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
- Fuel Injection Fuel Rail Fuel Pressure Sensor (1) - Install and hand tighten
- Fuel Injection Fuel Rail Fuel Pressure Sensor (1) - Remove
- Lubricate the threads and sealing surface of the fuel injection fuel rail fuel pressure sensor again with one drop of clean engine oil.
- Fuel Injection Fuel Rail Fuel Pressure Sensor (1) - Install and tighten Fastener Specifications
Inspect the fuel injectors for the following conditions:
CAUTION:The fuel injector must be cleaned with the proper cleaning equipment. DO NOT use abrasive cleaning methods, such as a metallic brush, to remove deposits. Cleaning an injector with improper tools will damage the fuel injector.
- Damage to the fuel injector connector (1)
- Damage to the fuel inlet (2)
- Damage to the sealing surface on the fuel injector (3)
- Damage to the fuel injector body (4)
- Damage to the fuel injector tip (5)
- Replace the fuel rail or injector if any damage is found. Do not attempt to repair a fuel rail or injector.
- NOTE:
Do NOT install the fuel injector nozzle housing seals until AFTER the injectors are installed on the fuel rail.
Fuel Injector Seal Spacer (1) - Install NEW [4x]
Fuel Injector Seal (2) - Install NEW [4x]
- Fuel Injector Bushing (3) - Install NEW [4x]
- CAUTION:
During the installation of the fuel rail and injector assembly, ensure that the fuel injectors are positioned straight into the injector opening. Failure to follow this caution can tilt or bend the injectors and could cause leaks or malfunction after installation.
NOTE:Use a fiberless, lint free swab to apply the lubrication to the O-ring before installation.
Holding the largest diameter/body (2) of the injector only, insert the injector assembly (2) into the fuel rail. Ensure correct orientation of the electrical connector.
- Fuel Injector Retainer (1) - Install NEW
- Repeat for remaining injectors until all are installed and retained in fuel rail.
- NOTE:
When installing the connectors, ensure the connector position assurance (CPA) tab is engaged for each connector.
Install the fuel injector wiring harness (2) and connect to appropriate fuel injectors and fuel pressure sensor connectors.
- Fuel Injector Wiring Harness Strap (1) - Install NEW
- NOTE:
DO NOT use any type of lubricant when installing the NEW combustion seals on the fuel injector tip.
Install EN-51955-1 long protector (1) onto the fuel injector tip, covering the first recessed area closest to the tip. Place a NEW seal (2) on EN-51955-1 long protector (1).
- Using EN-51955-4 pusher (3), install the seal (2) into the recessed area (4) of the fuel injector, then remove the EN-51955-1 long protector.
- Compress the seal (2) using EN-51955-3 pre-sizer (5).
- Using EN-51955-5 sizer (6), resize the seal.
- Install EN-51955-2 short protector (7) onto the fuel injector tip. Place a second NEW seal (8) on EN-51105-2 short protector (7).
- Using EN-51955-4 pusher (3), install the seal (8) into the remaining recessed area (9) of the fuel injector, then remove EN-51105-2 short protector.
- Compress the seal (8) using EN-51955-3 pre-sizer (5).
- Using EN-51955-5 sizer (6), resize the seal.
- NOTE:
The fuel injector seals must fit properly in the relative groove. Overlapping of the fuel injector seals with the external surface of the injector must be avoided. Avoid handling the injector tip seals as much as possible to avoid damage.
Check both of the fuel injector combustion seals on each fuel injector for correct seat:
- The seal must not be too large, buckled, or corrugated (1)
- The seal must be fixed tight and accurate (2)
- If the seals are not installed correctly, remove the incorrect seal and replace with a NEW seal.
In the event fuel rail components will be reused or transferred, ensure transferred components are clean and inspect for any conditions that would render the component unfit for use.
Do not soak or submerge the fuel rail or injectors in solvent.
DO NOT apply force to the plastic housing of the sensor. Apply force only at the attached hexagon when loosening or tightening the sensor.
Refer to Component Fastener Tightening Caution .
Ensure the fuel rail is secure, as to not side load the fuel pressure sensor.
Arrows show proper orientation to install the bushing. The bushing will fit flush against the injector.
Ensure the fuel injector retainer is properly installed. Failure to completely install the retainers may degrade fuel injection system performance or cause system malfunction.
