Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2022 Cadillac CT5. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Prepare the engine for installation.
  2. If replacing the engine, transfer components as necessary.
  3. Install the J-41803-9  engine lift hooks to the engine.
  4. Using an engine hoist and the J-41803-9  engine lift hooks raise the engine slightly.
  5. Remove the engine from the engine stand.
  6. Using an engine hoist and the J-41803-9  engine lift hooks lower the engine onto the cradle.
  7. Install the engine mount nuts and tighten to 65 N.m (48 lb ft).
  8. Remove the J 41798  engine lifting brackets from the engine.
  9. Position the engine and cradle beneath the vehicle.
  10. Partially lower the vehicle onto the engine and cradle.
  11. CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution .

  12. Route the ground harness and install retaining fasteners at the left and right rear cylinder heads. Tighten the fasteners to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
  13. Route the engine harness and install retaining fasteners at the rear of the engine. Tighten the fasteners to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
  14. Install the ground straps and ground strap bolts to the rear of cylinder heads. Tighten the ground strap bolts to 32 N.m (24 lb ft).
  15. Reconnect the electrical connector for the knock sensor, left side.
  16. Reconnect the electrical connector for the knock sensor, right side.
  17. Lower the vehicle onto the cradle and align the dowels.
  18. Install the front and rear cradle fasteners - Drivetrain and Front Suspension Cradle Removal and Installation (Blackwing)
  19. Remove the J 39580  engine support table and the J 39580-500  engine support table top.
  20. Install the lower ball joint in the steering knuckle. [2x] - Front Lower Control Front Link Replacement (RWD)
  21. Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod @ Steering Knuckle - Connect [2x] - Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement (with Blackwing)
  22. Stabilizer Shaft Link @ Lower Control Arm - Connect - Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement (FE2) , or Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement (FE3, FE4)

    Front Wheel Speed Sensor Wiring Harness (1) - Connect [2x] - Front Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement (J57, J6H)

    Oil Level Sensor (3) - Connect

  25. Crankshaft Position Sensor (2) - Connect
  26. Knock Sensor (1) - Connect
  27. Transmission - Install - Transmission Replacement (RWD) , or Manual Transmission Removal and Installation
  28. Exhaust Muffler - Install - Exhaust Muffler Replacement (LT4)

    Electrical Connector @ Steering Gear - Connect [2x]

  30. Connect the intermediate steering shaft to the steering gear. Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement (RWD)
  31. Install the front tires and wheels. Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (without J57) , or Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (with J57)
  32. Front Cradle Shear Plate - Install - Front Cradle Shear Plate Replacement (Blackwing)
  33. Lower the vehicle.

    Air Conditioning Compressor Hose - Connect - Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement (LT4)

    Fuel Feed Hose (1) @ Fuel Feed Pipe - Connect - Fuel Feed Front Hose Replacement

  36. Charge Air Cooler Coolant Hose - Install - Charge Air Cooler Coolant Hose Replacement (LT4 Charge Air Cooler Coolant Pump to Charge Air Cooler Front Manifold)

    Charge Air Cooler Coolant Hose (2) - Connect - Charge Air Cooler Coolant Hose Replacement (LT4 Charge Air Cooler Front Manifold to Engine Radiator Intercooler Heat Exchanger)

  38. Radiator Outlet Hose - Install - Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement (LT4)

    Radiator Inlet Hose (2) @ Engine Coolant Thermostat Housing - Connect

    Radiator Surge Tank Inlet Hose (2) @ Engine Coolant Thermostat Housing - Connect

  41. Position the engine harness and attach the retainers.

    Install the battery terminal (1) to the jump start post. Battery Negative Cable Extension Cable Replacement

  43. Engine Control Module Bracket - Install - Engine Control Module Bracket Replacement

    Electrical Connector - Connect @ Transmission Control Module - Transmission Control Module Replacement

  45. Attach the harness retainer (2)
  46. Install both front wheelhouse liners. Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement (Blackwing)
  47. Recharge the A/C system. Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging
  48. NOTE:

    Prelube is necessary if the engine is replaced or overhauled.

  49. If the engine is replaced with a new engine or has been overhauled, perform the Engine Prelubing procedure. Engine Prelubing 
  50. Fill the engine oil to the proper level with NEW engine oil. Approximate Fluid Capacities , and Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations
  51. Disable the ignition system.
  52. Crank the engine several times. Listen for any unusual noises or evidence that parts are binding.
  53. Enable the ignition system.
  54. Start the engine and listen for unusual noises.
  55. Check the vehicle oil pressure gauge and confirm that the engine has acceptable oil pressure.

    If necessary, install an oil pressure gauge and measure the engine oil pressure.

  56. Start the engine and run the engine speed at about 1, 000 RPM until the engine has reached normal operating temperature.
  57. Listen for sticking lifters and other unusual noises.
  58. Inspect for fuel, oil, and/or other coolant leaks while the engine is running.
  59. Perform the crankshaft position variation learn. Crankshaft Position Variation Learn
  60. Perform a final inspection for the proper engine oil and coolant levels.
  61. Align the vehicle. Wheel Alignment Measurement
