Certain critical messages transmitted between control modules via the in-vehicle networks must be authenticated to verify the legitimacy of the data and its source. If a control module cannot correctly authenticate a secure message, there could be a fault in that control module or in the control module sending a secure message. These DTCs could cause a wide variety of vehicle symptoms in multiple subsystems. Invalid data DTCs will often be set at the same time as these DTCs.
