Installation Procedure

  1. GM5020886
    NOTE:

    Coat all bearing surfaces with engine oil.

    Exhaust Camshaft (1) - Install

  2. Intake Camshaft (2) - Install
  3. Camshaft Cover Opening Plug (3) Not servicable

    Ensure that the camshaft notch at the front of the camshaft is in the 6 o'clock position.

    Coat all bearing surfaces with engine oil.

    Camshaft Bearing Cap (1, 2, 3) - Install [3x]

    Camshaft Bearing Cap Bolt (1) - Install and hand tighten [26x]

    Camshaft Bearing Cap Bolt - Tighten in sequence [26x] - Fastener Specifications

    CAUTION:

    Tamper Proof Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) Valve - Fresh Air: Do not attempt to remove the PCV valve by prying or twisting the PCV valve to separate the valve from the mating cover or component. Prying or twisting the PCV valve will result in fracture of one or more valve retention tabs which can fall into the engine resulting in internal engine damage. Remove the PCV valve mating cover or component from the engine before attempting to remove the PCV valve.

    Positive Crankcase Ventilation Valve (4)

    NOTE:

    Use care around the positive crankcase ventilation valve to ensure you do not break the 3 tabs that hold it to the camshaft carrier.

  9. Camshaft Position Sensor Seal (3) - Install NEW
  10. Camshaft Position Sensor (2) - Install [6x]
  11. Camshaft Position Sensor Bolt (1) - Install and tighten [6x] - Fastener Specifications

    NOTE:

    Coat the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve seal with a bit engine oil.

    Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Seal (3) - Install NEW [6x]

  13. Camshaft Position Actuator (2) - Install [6x]
  14. Camshaft Position Actuator Bolt (1) - Install and tighten [12x] - Fastener Specifications

  17. NOTE:
    • The cylinder head and camshaft carrier sealing surface must be free of contamination prior to applying the sealer.
    • Install and align the camshaft carrier to cylinder head within 10 minutes of applying the sealer.
    • The camshaft carrier must be fastened to final torque specification within 15 minutes of applying the sealer.
    • Ensure proper use of room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealant. Use of Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) and Anaerobic Sealant
  18. Apply a 5 mm (0.2 in) bead of RTV (4) to the top and bottom of camshaft cover gasket to fill the T-joint. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers
  19. NOTE:

    A small amount of adhesive in the corners will help keep the gasket in place.

  20. Camshaft Cover Gasket (2) - Install NEW
  21. Camshaft Carrier (1) - Install

    Camshaft Cover Stud (1) - Install and tighten in sequence [14x] - Fastener Specifications

  24. Camshaft Carrier Bolt (2) - Install and tighten in sequence-M6 [4x] - Fastener Specifications
  25. Camshaft Carrier Bolt (3) - Install and tighten in sequence-M8 [4x] - Fastener Specifications

  40. Radiator Surge Tank Outlet Hose Clip Bracket Nut [2x] - Install and tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications
  41. Install harness retainers as needed.

    NOTE:

    The timing pin (3) is installed into the flexplate for engine timing procedures, it can be damaged if torque is applied to the flexplate with the timing pin engaged. The timing pin must be placed in the retracted position using the handle (1) and twisting to locked position. The slide part (4) to be installed to the flex plate when torque is applied to the flexplate or crankshaft balancer bolt.

    Ensure the timing pin (3) of the EN-52476  Flywheel Holding Tool (2) is installed to the automatic transmission flex plate.

    Install the EN-52461  Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (5) along with the 2 EN-52461  Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (2, 3) to the camshaft carrier.

  44. Tighten the 2 bolts (1, 4) of EN-52461 - 100  Adapter Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool.

    CAUTION:

    Hold the camshaft sprocket firmly and squarely during camshaft sprocket bolt removal/installation. Failure to do so may result in damage to the inside of the camshaft sprocket.

    Hold the intake camshaft sprocket (1) with hands from underneath the EN-52461  Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool and install the EN-52461 - 1  Holder into the intake camshaft sprocket to hold it securely before installing the camshaft sprocket bolt.

  46. Line up intake camshaft sprocket (1) with alignment marks, as you install them on chain and the housing which should of been done on removal.

    Hold the exhaust camshaft sprocket (1) with hands from underneath the EN-52461  Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool and install the EN-52461 - 1  Holder into the exhaust camshaft sprocket to hold it securely before installing the camshaft sprocket bolt (1).

  48. Line up exhaust camshaft sprocket (1) with alignment marks, as you install them on chain and the housing which should of been done on removal.

    Lubricate the Camshaft Sprocket Bolts (1) with clean engine oil where indicated. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

    Camshaft Sprocket Bolt (1) - Install NEW and hand tighten

    EN-52436  Timing Chain Tensioner Retention Tool (1) @ Timing Chain (2) - Remove

    Check that the EN-52461 - 1  Holder (1) sits correctly in the hole of the intake camshaft sprocket.

  53. Rotate the EN-52461 - 1  Holder (1) counter clockwise.
  54. While holding the EN-52461 - 1  Holder in the clockwise position to 6 N.m (53 lb in), tighten the bolt (4) just enough to hold the EN-52461 - 1  Holder in place.
  55. Intake Camshaft Sprocket Bolt (2) - Tighten - Fastener Specifications
  56. Check that the EN-52461 - 1  Holder (1) sits correctly in the hole of the exhaust camshaft sprocket.
  57. Rotate the EN-52461 - 1  Holder counter clockwise.
  58. While holding the EN-52461 - 1  Holder in the counter clockwise position to 6 N.m (53 lb in), tighten the bolt (3) just enough to hold the EN-52461 - 1  Holder in place.
  59. Exhaust Camshaft Sprocket Bolt (2) - Tighten - Fastener Specifications

    Bolt (1, 2) - Loosen

  61. Slide the 2 EN-52461 - 1  Holder (3) out of the camshaft sprockets.

    Loosen the 2 bolts (1, 4) of EN-52461 - 100  Adapter Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (5).

  63. Remove the EN-52461  Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (5) along with the 2 EN-52461 - 100  Adapter Cam Phaser Torque Reaction Tool (2, 3) from the engine.

    Remove the EN-52462 - A  Camshaft Tool (1) by rotating the levers in direction of arrows.

    Loosen and disengage the bolt (2) from EN-52462-A  Camshaft Alignment Tool (1).

    Clean and apply sealant to the camshaft cover opening plugs (1). Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

    Inspect the inside of the ignition coil boot for a thin, even coat of dielectric grease. If there is no grease present or additional grease is necessary, apply a thin coating of dielectric grease to the inside of the ignition coil boot up to a depth of 15 mm (0.60 in from the end of the boot.

    - Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

  74. Remove any excess dielectric grease from around the end of the ignition coil boot and ensure there is not an excessive amount within the boot.

  76. Ignition Coil Bolt (1) - Install and tighten [8x] - Fastener Specifications
  77. Electrical Connector - Connect [2x]

  81. Positive Crankcase Ventilation Hose Connector Bolt (1) - Install and tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications
  82. Electrical Connector - Connect

    Electrical Connector (1) @ Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (2) - Install

    NOTE:
    • The timing chain upper cover sealing surface must be free of contamination prior to applying the sealer.
    • Install and align the timing chain upper cover to engine block within 10 minutes of applying the sealer.
    • The timing chain upper cover must be fastened to final torque specification within 15 minutes of applying the sealer.
    • Ensure proper use of room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) sealant. Use of Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) and Anaerobic Sealant

    Apply a 5 mm (0.2 in) bead of RTV (2) in the middle of both sides between the camshaft housing and the cylinder head T joint. Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers

  85. Check that the 2 Pins (1) are in the camshaft housing or in the timing chain upper cover.

    Camshaft Position Actuator Magnet Gasket (3) - Install NEW

  91. Camshaft Position Actuator Valve Solenoid (2) - Install
  92. Camshaft Position Actuator Valve Solenoid Bolt (1) - Install [2x] - Fastener Specifications

    Camshaft Position Actuator Magnet Gasket (3) - Install NEW

  98. Connect the 2 electrical connectors to the camshaft position actuator valve solenoids.

    The EN-52443  High Pressure Fuel Pump Alignment Tool has two ends marked with number 1 (1) and number 2 (2).

    Install the EN-52443  High Pressure Fuel Pump Alignment Tool (2) with the number 2 (1) facing outward to ensure the camshaft lobe is at the base position.

  106. CAUTION:

    Alternately hand-tighten the fuel pump bolts one turn at a time until the pump is fully seated. Trying to draw down the pump without even side-to-side tightening may result in pump plunger damage.

  107. Fuel Pump Bolt (4) - Install and tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications
  108. Connect the fuel pump electrical connector.

    Fuel Feed Intermediate Pipe (2) - Install NEW

  110. Nut @ Fuel Feed Intermediate Pipe (2) - Tighten [2x] - Fastener Specifications

    Fuel Pump Insulator (1) - Install

    Fuel Feed Pipe (1) @ Fuel Pump - Connect - Metal Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service

  114. Reposition wiring harness as necessary.

  116. Fuel Pump Shield Bolt (1) - Install and tighten [3x] - Fastener Specifications
  117. Reposition wiring harness as necessary.

  121. Connect the electrical connector.

    Wiring Harness (4) - Reposition

  161. Retainer (2) @ Upper Intake Manifold Bracket (3) - Install [3x]
  162. Electrical Connector (1) - Connect [3x]

    Intake Manifold Cover (1) @ Upper Intake Manifold Bracket (2) - Install

    NOTE:

    Ensure the engine sight shield retainers fully engage the intake manifold cover studs.

    Push down on the front of the intake manifold cover (1) engaging the intake manifold cover retainers to the intake manifold cover studs.

  165. Fill the engine oil to the proper level with NEW engine oil. Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement (RWD) , or Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement (AWD)
  166. Install the oil fill cap.
  167. Fill the cooling system. Cooling System Draining and Filling (LSY GE 47716) , or Cooling System Draining and Filling (LSY Static Fill) , or Cooling System Draining and Filling (LSY with V03 Static Fill) , or Cooling System Draining and Filling (LSY with V03 GE 47716)
  168. Connect the battery. Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
  169. Perform the throttle body idle air flow compensation reset. Throttle Body Idle Air Flow Compensation Reset
  170. Inspect for fuel leaks using the following procedure:
    1. Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF for 2 seconds.
    2. Turn OFF the ignition for 10 seconds.
    3. Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
    4. Inspect for fuel leaks.
  171. Start the engine and check for coolant leaks.
  172. Perform the engine oil life reset. GM Oil Life System Resetting (With Scan Tool) , or GM Oil Life System Resetting (Without Scan Tool)
