Removal Procedure

  1. GM5335087

    Lift up on the front of the intake manifold cover (1).

    Intake Manifold Cover (1) @ Upper Intake Manifold Bracket (2) - Remove

  3. Transmission - Remove - Transmission Replacement (Rear Wheel Drive) , or Transmission Replacement (All Wheel Drive)

    NOTE:

    The timing pin is installed into the flexplate for engine timing procedures, it can be damaged if torque is applied to the flexplate with the timing pin engaged. The timing pin must be placed in the retracted position using the handle and twisting to locked position. The slide part to be installed to the flexplate when torque is applied to the flexplate or crankshaft balancer bolt.

    EN-52476  Flywheel Lock and Alignment Tool (1) - Install

  5. Automatic Transmission Flex Plate Bolt (2) - Loosen [8x]

    Automatic Transmission Flex Plate Bolt (2) - Remove and DISCARD [8x]

  8. Automatic Transmission Flex Plate (1) - Remove

    Disconnect the electrical connector.

  10. Crankshaft Position Sensor Bolt (1) - Remove
  11. Crankshaft Position Sensor (2) - Remove

    CAUTION:

    Do not allow the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring to come into contact with external magnetic fields or sharp metal objects. Do not drop the crankshaft position sensor reluctor ring. Do not damage the rubberized encoder track. Failure to follow these precautions may cause damage to the component.

    Crankshaft Position Sensor Inner Exciter Ring (1) - Remove

  13. Flywheel Locating Pin (2) - Remove
  14. Disconnect harness retainers from lower oil pan as needed.

    Lower Oil Pan Bolt (1) - Remove [18x]

  16. NOTE:
    1. Do not pry on the oil pan to LCE as the sealing surface will become damaged.
    2. Use the lower oil pan bolts in the provided jack screw or threaded inserts in the oil pan. Tighten the jack screw by hand 1 to 2 turn each uniformly and move to the next screw until the oil pan has full separation from the LCE.
  17. Lower Oil Pan (2) - Remove

    Install the EN-52441  Balance Shaft Timing Tool (1) through the hole in the oil pump. Use suitable strap to hold in place.

    Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Housing Bolt (1) - Remove [13x]

  20. NOTE:

    It is likely you will bend the housing during removal. Use care to not damage the engine block.

  21. Loosen the crankshaft rear oil seal housing (2) carefully from the engine block, use a suitable tool to pry all the way around.
  22. Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Housing (2) - Remove and DISCARD

    Compress the balance chain tensioner (1) by pushing in the direction of the arrow.

    Balancer Chain Tensioner Bolt (2) - Remove [2x]

    If the balancer chain tensioner (1) needs put back together, install the retaining spring (3) and the plunger (2), then install the EN-955-10-A  Locking Pin to reset the tensioner.

    Balance Chain Guide Bolt (1) - Remove [2x]

    Hold on the balance shaft sprocket (1) with a suitable wrench to loose the balance shaft sprocket bolt (2).

  33. Disconnect harness connectors and retainers as needed.

    Air Conditioning Compressor Bolt (2) - Remove

    NOTE:

    Only need to remove the 2 that are attached to the lower crankcase extension.

    Engine Mount Bracket Bolt- Right Side (1) - Remove and DISCARD

    Engine Mount Bracket Bolt- Left Side (1) - Remove and DISCARD

    Oil Pump Screen Bolt (1) - Remove

  38. Oil Pump Screen (2) - Remove
  39. Oil Pump Suction Pipe Gasket (3) - Remove and DISCARD

    Oil Filter Bypass Valve (1) - Remove

    Balancer Shaft Access Hole Nut (1) - Remove

  42. Balancer Shaft Access Hole Washer (2) - Remove
  43. NOTE:

    Rotate and tilt the balancer shaft access hole plate as necessary to remove through the access hole.

  44. Balancer Shaft Access Hole Plate (3) - Remove

    Take note that there are different bolt lengths.

    Lower Crankcase Extension Bolt (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) - Remove [15x]

    Lower Crankcase Extension Bolt (1, 2, 3) - Remove [3x]

    Loosen the lower crankcase extension (LCE) carefully from the engine block, use a suitable tool at the location as shown to pry. (1, 2, 3)
