CAUTION:- Turn the ignition OFF when installing or removing the control module connectors and disconnecting or reconnecting the power to the control module in order to prevent internal control module damage.
- Control module damage may result when the metal case contacts battery voltage. DO NOT contact the control module metal case with battery voltage when servicing a control module, using battery booster cables, or when charging the vehicle battery.
- In order to prevent any possible electrostatic discharge damage to the control module, do no touch the connector pins or the soldered components on the circuit board.
- Remove any debris from around the control module connector surfaces before servicing the control module. Inspect the control module connector gaskets, and ensure that the gaskets are installed correctly. The gaskets prevent contaminant intrusion into the control module.

- NOTE:
This will put the camshafts in a rested position and aid in removal.
Rotate the engine clockwise using the crankshaft dampener retaining bolt until laser etched flats on both camshafts are facing up (1).
- CAUTION:
Refer to Torque Reaction Against Timing Drive Chain Caution .
NOTE:Do NOT remove or back out the camshaft position actuator bolt. Simply break them loose from their fully-torqued position. The position actuators must stay firmly attached until the retaining tools are in place, but they should be broken loose while the chain is still tight and in position.
Use an opened end wrench on the cast hexagonal portion (1) of the camshaft to hold them in place while breaking the camshaft position actuator bolt (2) loose to prevent camshaft rotation.
- Camshaft Position Actuator Bolt (2) - Loosen
- NOTE:
Marking the relationship of the timing chain to actuators is critical for timing alignment.
Clean off any oil residue on camshaft position actuators.
- Mark the position of the chain to the camshaft position actuators (1).
Camshaft Bearing Cap Bolt (1) - Remove [4x]
- Camshaft Bearing Cap (2) - Remove
Loosen the wingnut (1) to open the clamping area of EN-49982 - 1 Retainer.
- Install the EN-49982 - 1 Retainer (2) and hand tighten the thumbscrew (3).
- Tighten the wingnut (1) of the EN-49982 Timing Chain Retainer until it closes over and firmly grasps timing chain.
Insert the EN-49982 - 2 Retainer (1) between the two camshaft position actuators with the "teeth" on the EN-49982 - 2 Retainer facing toward the front cover.
- Once the wedge portion of the EN-49982 - 2 Retainer (1) is below the camshaft actuators, rotate the EN-49982 - 2 Retainer until the flat in the handle faces towards the intake camshaft position actuator.
Lower the EN-49982 - 2 Retainer (1) until it begins to engage the timing chain and timing cover casting.
- If possible shine a light down from above, between the camshaft position actuators, and the EN-49982 - 2 Retainer (1) to ensure retainer is seated in proper position.
- NOTE:
This rotation of the camshaft will compress the tensioner shoe against the spring force of the tensioner, opening up a gap between the chain and the internal rib in the front cover. The wedge will then drop into this gap and you will feel a distinct click as the teeth engage the chain.
Use an opened end wrench on the cast hexagonal portion (1) rotate the camshaft toward the intake camshaft while pushing down on the handle of EN-49982 - 2 Retainer (1).
- Release the force on the wrench, allowing the spring tension to close the tensioner shoe against the wedge portion of EN49982-2 Retainer. You should be able to lightly tug on the EN - 49982-2 Retainer and it should stay in position. Repeat steps if necessary to re-insert the EN49982-2 Retainer until you are certain it is in position and will stay in position.
- CAUTION:
Do not pry against the face of the camshaft position actuators or the position actuator retaining bolts as the position actuators will be damaged.
Position a suitable tool between a camshaft cap and camshaft lobe (1). Carefully move/pry the camshaft as far as possible toward the rear/flywheel end of the engine.
Camshaft Position Actuator Bolt (1) - Remove
Slide the camshaft position actuator (1) forward and off the end of the exhaust camshaft.
- NOTE:
DO NOT remove the EN-49982 - 1 Retainer, they are holding the camshaft timing chain to maintain the proper timed position.
Tilt the camshaft position actuator (1) forward and out/away from the engine.
Be sure the EN49982-2 is captured firmly as described before continuing. This is critical to ensuring the camshaft drive chains stay properly timed.
