Circuit/System Testing

NOTE:
- When test probing harness terminals, it is imperative to use the proper test probe from the most current version of the J-35616 GM-Approved Terminal Test Kit. Use of an improper test probe may deform the terminal, resulting in intermittent open conditions.
- While performing circuit testing, visually inspect each connector terminal for damage or corrosion and repair as necessary.
- Ignition OFF and all vehicle systems OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the A16 Transfer Case Motor. It may take up to 2 minutes for all vehicle systems to power down.
- Test for less than 10 Ω between the low reference circuit terminal H and ground.
- If 10 Ω or greater
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the X1 harness connector at the K69 Transfer Case Control Module.
- Test for less than 2 Ω in the low reference circuit end to end.
- If 2 Ω or greater, repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
- If less than 2 Ω, replace the K69 Transfer Case Control Module.
- Go to next step: If less than 10 Ω
- Ignition ON.
- Test for 7.2 - 8.5 V between the 8 V reference circuit terminal G and ground.
- If less than 7.2 V
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the X1 harness connector at the K69 Transfer Case Control Module.
- Test for infinite resistance between the 8 V reference circuit and ground.
- If less than infinite resistance, repair the short to ground on the circuit.
- If infinite resistance
- Test for less than 2 Ω in the 8 V reference circuit end to end.
- If 2 Ω or greater, repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
- If less than 2 Ω, replace the K69 Transfer Case Control Module.
- If greater than 8.5 V
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the X1 harness connector at the K69 Transfer Case Control Module, ignition ON.
- Test for less than 1 V between the 8 V reference circuit and ground.
- If 1 V or greater, repair the short to voltage on the circuit.
- If less than 1 V, replace the K69 Transfer Case Control Module.
- Go to next step: If between 7.2 - 8.5 V
- Verify the scan tool Range Actuator Position Sensor parameter is greater than 6 V.
- If less than 6 V
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the X1 harness connector at the K69 Transfer Case Control Module.
- Test for infinite resistance between the signal circuit terminal E and ground.
- If less than infinite resistance, repair the short to ground on the circuit.
- If infinite resistance, replace the K69 Transfer Case Control Module.
- Go to next step: If greater than 6 V
- Connect a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal E and the low reference circuit terminal H.
- Verify the scan tool Range Actuator Position Sensor parameter is less than 1 V.
- If greater than 1 V
- Ignition OFF, remove the jumper wire, disconnect the X1 harness connector at the K69 Transfer Case Control Module, ignition ON.
- Test for less than 1 V between the signal circuit terminal E and ground.
- If 1 V or greater, repair the short to voltage on the circuit.
- If less than 1 V
- Ignition OFF
- Test for less than 2 Ω in the signal circuit end to end.
- If 2 Ω or greater, repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
- If less than 2 Ω, replace the K69 Transfer Case Control Module.
- Go to next step: If less than 1 V
- Verify the scan tool Range Actuator Position Sensor Direction Signal parameter is greater than 6 V.
- If less than 6 V
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the X1 harness connector at the K69 Transfer Case Control Module.
- Test for infinite resistance between the signal circuit terminal F and ground.
- If less than infinite resistance, repair the short to ground on the circuit.
- If infinite resistance, replace the K69 Transfer Case Control Module.
- Go to next step: If greater than 6 V
- Connect a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal F and the low reference circuit terminal H.
- Verify the scan tool Range Actuator Position Sensor Direction Signal parameter is less than 1 V.
- If greater than 1 V
- Ignition OFF, remove the jumper wire, disconnect the X1 harness connector at the K69 Transfer Case Control Module, ignition ON.
- Test for less than 1 V between the signal circuit terminal F and ground.
- If 1 V or greater, repair the short to voltage in the circuit.
- If less than 1 V
- Ignition OFF
- Test for less than 2 Ω in the signal circuit end to end.
- If 2 Ω or greater, repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
- If less than 2 Ω, replace the K69 Transfer Case Control Module.
- Go to next step: If less than 1 V
- Reconnect the A16 Transfer Case Motor.
- Clear DTC C0396, C039E, P0652 or P0653 from history.
- Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data. The DTC should not set.
- If any of the DTCs set
Test or replace the A16 Transfer Case Motor
- Go to next step: If none of the DTCs set
- If any of the DTCs set
- All OK.
