Circuit/System Testing

NOTE:
  • When test probing harness terminals, it is imperative to use the proper test probe from the most current version of the J-35616  GM-Approved Terminal Test Kit. Use of an improper test probe may deform the terminal, resulting in intermittent open conditions.
  • While performing circuit testing, visually inspect each connector terminal for damage or corrosion and repair as necessary.
  1. Ignition OFF and all vehicle systems OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the A16 Transfer Case Motor. It may take up to 2 minutes for all vehicle systems to power down.
  2. Test for less than 10 Ω between the low reference circuit terminal H and ground.
    • If 10 Ω or greater 
    1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X1 harness connector at the K69 Transfer Case Control Module.
    2. Test for less than 2 Ω in the low reference circuit end to end.
      • If 2 Ω or greater, repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
      • If less than 2 Ω, replace the K69 Transfer Case Control Module.
    • Go to next step: If less than 10 Ω 
  3. Ignition ON.
  4. Test for 7.2 - 8.5 V between the 8 V reference circuit terminal G and ground.
    • If less than 7.2 V 
    1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X1 harness connector at the K69 Transfer Case Control Module.
    2. Test for infinite resistance between the 8 V reference circuit and ground.
      • If less than infinite resistance, repair the short to ground on the circuit.
      • If infinite resistance
    3. Test for less than 2 Ω in the 8 V reference circuit end to end.
      • If 2 Ω or greater, repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
      • If less than 2 Ω, replace the K69 Transfer Case Control Module.
    • If greater than 8.5 V 
    1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X1 harness connector at the K69 Transfer Case Control Module, ignition ON.
    2. Test for less than 1 V between the 8 V reference circuit and ground.
      • If 1 V or greater, repair the short to voltage on the circuit.
      • If less than 1 V, replace the K69 Transfer Case Control Module.
    • Go to next step: If between 7.2 - 8.5 V 
  5. Verify the scan tool Range Actuator Position Sensor parameter is greater than 6 V.
    • If less than 6 V 
    1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X1 harness connector at the K69 Transfer Case Control Module.
    2. Test for infinite resistance between the signal circuit terminal E and ground.
      • If less than infinite resistance, repair the short to ground on the circuit.
      • If infinite resistance, replace the K69 Transfer Case Control Module.
    • Go to next step: If greater than 6 V 
  6. Connect a 3 A fused jumper wire between the Signal circuit terminal E and the low reference circuit terminal H.
  7. Verify the scan tool Range Actuator Position Sensor parameter is less than 1 V.
    • If greater than 1 V 
    1. Ignition OFF, remove the jumper wire, disconnect the X1 harness connector at the K69 Transfer Case Control Module, ignition ON.
    2. Test for less than 1 V between the signal circuit terminal E and ground.
      • If 1 V or greater, repair the short to voltage on the circuit.
      • If less than 1 V
    3. Ignition OFF
    4. Test for less than 2 Ω in the signal circuit end to end.
      • If 2 Ω or greater, repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
      • If less than 2 Ω, replace the K69 Transfer Case Control Module.
    • Go to next step: If less than 1 V 
  8. Verify the scan tool Range Actuator Position Sensor Direction Signal parameter is greater than 6 V.
    • If less than 6 V 
    1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X1 harness connector at the K69 Transfer Case Control Module.
    2. Test for infinite resistance between the signal circuit terminal F and ground.
      • If less than infinite resistance, repair the short to ground on the circuit.
      • If infinite resistance, replace the K69 Transfer Case Control Module.
    • Go to next step: If greater than 6 V 
  9. Connect a 3 A fused jumper wire between the Signal circuit terminal F and the low reference circuit terminal H.
  10. Verify the scan tool Range Actuator Position Sensor Direction Signal parameter is less than 1 V.
    • Go to next step: If greater than 1 V 
    1. Ignition OFF, remove the jumper wire, disconnect the X1 harness connector at the K69 Transfer Case Control Module, ignition ON.
    2. Test for less than 1 V between the Signal circuit terminal F and ground.
      • If 1 V or greater, repair the short to voltage in the circuit.
      • If less than 1 V
    1. Ignition OFF
    2. Test for less than 2 Ω in the signal circuit end to end.
      • If 2 Ω or greater, repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.
      • If less than 2 Ω, replace the K69 Transfer Case Control Module.
    • Go to next step: If less than 1 V 
  11. Reconnect the A16 Transfer Case Motor.
  12. Clear DTC C0396, C039E, P0652 or P0653 from history.
  13. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data. The DTC should not set.
    • If any of the DTCs are set 

      Test or replace the A16 Transfer Case Motor

    • Go to next step: If none of the DTCs set 
  14. All OK.
