Removal Procedure
- Place the hood in the service position. Refer to Hood Service Positioning .
- Remove the radiator inlet hose (2). Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement (L83 L86) .
- Remove the radiator outlet hose (3). Refer to Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement (L83 L86) .
- Drain the engine oil. Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement
- Remove the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement (L83 L86) .
- Remove the air conditioning condenser. Refer to Air Conditioning Condenser Replacement (L83 L86) .
- Remove the headlamp and radiator grille mount panel. Refer to Headlamp and Radiator Grille Mount Panel Replacement .
- Remove the heater inlet hose (1). Refer to Heater Inlet Hose Replacement (L83 L86) .
- Remove the heater outlet hose. Refer to Heater Outlet Hose Replacement (L83 L86) .
- Remove the generator bracket (6) from the engine assembly. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement (L83, L86) .
- Remove the fuel injection fuel rail assembly - bank 1 (2). Refer to Fuel Injection Fuel Rail Assembly Replacement - Bank 1 .
- Install the front engine lift bracket (1) to the position shown.
- Install the rear engine lift bracket (1) to the position shown.
- Remove the engine control module (1). Refer to Engine Control Module Replacement .
- Disconnect the lever lock connector at the underhood electrical center and disconnect the harness retainers.
- If equipped with 4WD, disconnect the front differential vent hose from the wiring harness.
- Disconnect the engine main wiring harness from the engine wiring harness junction block (1). Refer to Underhood Electrical Center or Junction Block Replacement .
- Remove the main engine harness retainer bolt and disconnect the main engine wire harness from the left side of the engine coolant manifold and water inlet housing.
- Disconnect the wiring harness at the left shock tower as necessary.
- Position the engine main wiring harness on to the engine assembly.
- Disconnect the generator cable retainer at the bracket on the right front cylinder head.
- Disconnect the air conditioning pressure sensor electrical connector and position aside. Refer to Air Conditioning (A/C) Refrigerant Pressure Sensor Replacement (L83 L86) .
- Disconnect the MAF sensor harness retainers at the bulkhead and right side battery box panel.
- Disconnect the battery current sensor electrical connector. Refer to Battery Current Sensor Replacement (L83, L86) .
- Position and secure the oil cooler hoses to the engine.
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
- If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, remove the front propeller shaft. Refer to Front Axle Propeller Shaft Replacement (NQH)Front Axle Propeller Shaft Replacement (Heavy Duty) .
- Remove the left flywheel inspection cover.
- Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Replacement (L83, L86) .
- Remove the right flywheel inspection cover.
- Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
- Remove the transmission crossmember (4). Refer to Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (2 WD)Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (4 WD) .
- Remove the exhaust front pipe (2). Refer to Three-Way Catalytic Converter Replacement .
- Remove the 3 flex plate to torque converter bolts.
- Disconnect the bank oxygen sensor wire harness retainers at the frame and bulkhead and position the harness to the engine.
- Lower the transmission to gain access to the top and sides of the transmission.
- If equipped with four wheel drive, disconnect the wire harness electrical connectors and harness retainers at the transfer case.
- Remove the transmission heat shield bolts and heat shield at the right side of the transmission.
- Remove the transmission wire harness retainer bolt at the right side of the transmission.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors from the transmission assembly, then position the wiring harness on the engine assembly.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Disconnect the transmission wire harness retainers on the back side of the engine.
- Disconnect the bank 2 fuel rail electrical connector from the engine harness.
- If equipped, position the transfer case wiring harness on the engine.
- Position the bank 2 oxygen sensor wiring harness on the engine.
- Remove the ground cable bolt at the right side of the engine and position the cable out of the way.
- Remove the transmission dip stick tube retaining nut (1).
- Reposition the transmission dip stick tube (2).
- Remove the vent tube bracket retaining nut from the back side of the engine.
- Remove the fuel line bracket bolt at the back of the engine.
- Remove the fuel line bracket retainers (1) at the left side of the transmission and reposition the fuel lines.
- Remove the 6 upper bolts securing the transmission to the engine.
- Raise the transmission to the original installation position.
- Temporary install the transmission crossmember (4) to support the transmission.
- Remove the jack supporting the transmission.
- Remove the two lower transmission to engine retaining bolts.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the right upper engine mount bolts (1). Refer to Engine Mount Replacement - Right Side .
- Remove the left upper engine mount bolts (1). Refer to Engine Mount Replacement - Left Side .
- Remove the transmission fluid cooler inlet and outlet pipe (1) from the transmission fluid cooler pipe clip (2).
- Disconnect the vacuum line and the vacuum sensor electrical connector (1) from the vacuum booster.
- If equipped, disconnect the engine block heater harness retainers and position the harness on the engine.
- Remove the nut holding the engine ground strap to the bulk head on the left side.
- Position a floor jack with a block of wood under the transmission.
- Install a suitable chain as tight as possible to the two engine lift brackets.
- Using a suitable engine lifting device, remove the engine from the vehicle.
- Install the J-21366 strap onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
- Transfer components as necessary.
- Drain the engine oil.
NOTE:
Ensure using a correct length bolt to keep the engine lift bracket firmly against the cylinder head.

Note the position and direction of the automatic transmission flex plate before removal.

Leave the two lower transmission bolts in place.
