Installation Procedure

  1. For cylinder head assemble. Refer to Cylinder Head Assemble .
  2. Clean any debris or residual fastener thread sealant from the engine block cylinder head bolt holes to ensure proper torque or clamp load.
    3. Fig 1: NEW Cylinder Head Gasket

  3. Install a NEW cylinder head gasket (1).
  4. Install cylinder head (2).
  5. Hand start cylinder head bolts (3 and 4).
    6. CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution .

    CAUTION:

    Refer to Torque-to-Yield Fastener Caution .

    NOTE:

    The forward most fastener on the Left Side Cylinder Head is unique to all other cylinder head fasteners. It is shorter, has an internal hex drive and has a lower final tightening torque angle.

  6. Tighten cylinder head bolts (4) in sequence.
    1. First Pass tighten to 80 N.m (59 lb ft)
    2. Second pass tighten + 90°
    3. Final pass tighten + 60°
  7. Tighten cylinder head bolt (3) in sequence.
    1. First Pass tighten to 80 N.m (59 lb ft)
    2. Second pass tighten + 90°
    3. Final pass tighten + 40°
  8. Connect electrical connectors as necessary.
  9. Install the valve rocker arms and push rods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement .
  10. Install the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Left Side (L83, L86) .
  11. Install the fuel injector rail. Refer to Fuel Injection Fuel Rail Assembly Replacement - Bank 1 .
  12. Refill the coolant system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling (Vac N Fill L83 L86)Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill L83 L86) .
