Removal Procedure

- Remove the oil level indicator tube. Refer to Oil Level Indicator Tube Replacement
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
- For 2500 series vehicles, loosen the 2 rear oil pan skid plate bolts, remove the 2 front oil pan skid plate bolts and skid plate, if equipped.
- If equipped with 4WD, remove the front axle. Refer to Front Axle Replacement (8.25 Inch LD Axle)Front Axle Replacement (9.25 Inch HD Axle) .
- Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
- Re-install the oil pan drain plug until snug.
- Remove Starter. Refer to Starter Replacement (L96)
- Remove the right side transmission cover bolt.
- Remove the left side transmission cover bolt and cover.
- Remove the crossbar bolts/nuts and crossbar.
- Remove the transmission oil cooler line clip bolt and clip from the oil pan.
- Remove the lower left transmission bolt.
- Remove the lower right transmission stud.
- Disconnect the electrical connector (1).
- Remove the battery cable channel bolt (2).
- Slide the channel pin (3) out of the oil pan tab.
- Disconnect the oil cooler hose (2) from the oil pan. Refer to Engine Oil Cooler Hose Replacement .
- Remove the oil pan bolts.
- Remove the oil pan.
- If reusing the oil pan perform the following steps, otherwise proceed to step 3 of the installation procedure.
- Drill out the oil pan gasket rivets (2), if necessary.
- Remove the oil pan gasket (1) from the pan.
- Discard the oil pan gasket.
- Discard the rivets, if necessary.
- Transfer parts as necessary.
NOTE:
DO NOT allow foreign material to enter the oil passages of the oil pan, cap or cover the openings as required.
