Cylinder Head Assemble

Special Tools 

J-8062  Valve Spring Compressor - Head Off

Equivalent regional tools: Special Tools

  1. Clean the cylinder head valve spring shim area.
  2. NOTE:

    When using the valves and related components again, install the parts to their original location.

  3. Install the valves (228) into the proper port. Refer to Separating Parts 
  4. Install a NEW valve stem oil seal (222).
  5. Install the valve spring (223).
  6. Install the valve spring cap (224).

  8. Using the J-8062  spring compressor, compress the valve spring.
  9. Install the valve stem keys.
    1. Use grease in order to hold the keys in place and remove the J-8062  spring compressor.
    2. Ensure the keys seat properly in the groove of the valve stem.
    3. Tap the end of the valve stem with a plastic face hammer to seat the keys, if necessary.

  11. After installation, measure the valve spring installed height.

    Measure from the base of the valve spring to the top of the valve spring. If the spring installed height is not within specification, the valve and/or cylinder head must be replaced. Refer to Engine Mechanical Specifications (RPO L96 VIN G) 

  12. Install the remaining valves, springs, and other components.

  14. Install sealant to the threads of the coolant temperature sensor (725). Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers 
  15. CAUTION:

    Refer to Fastener Caution

  16. Install the coolant temperature sensor into the left cylinder head and tighten to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).

  18. Install sealant to the threads of the cylinder head plug (229). Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers 
  19. Install the cylinder head plug to the right cylinder head and tighten to 20 N.m (15 lb ft).

  21. Apply threadlock to the sides of the cylinder head plugs (216). Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers 
  22. Install the cylinder head plugs into the cylinder head.

    A properly installed plug should be installed 2.5 mm (0.1 in) below the end face of the head.

  24. Install the rivet plug (1) into a rivet gun.

  26. Insert the rivet into the coolant passage of the cylinder head.
  27. Squeezing the handle of the tool, install the rivet.

  29. Inspect for proper installation of the rivet (1).

    A properly installed plug should be installed flush with the surface of the head.

  31. Installation of the first design coolant air bleed cover (313) and bolt (312) may be used instead of the rivet plug to complete the repair. Tighten the coolant air bleed bolts to 12 N.m (106 lb in).
