Fuel Pressure Relief

WARNING:

Fuel that flows out at high pressure can cause serious injury to the skin and eyes. ALWAYS depressurize the fuel system before removing components that are under high fuel pressure.

WARNING:

Remove the fuel tank cap and relieve the fuel system pressure before servicing the fuel system in order to reduce the risk of personal injury. After you relieve the fuel system pressure, a small amount of fuel may be released when servicing the fuel lines, the fuel injection pump, or the connections. In order to reduce the risk of personal injury, cover the fuel system components with a shop towel before disconnection. This will catch any fuel that may leak out. Place the towel in an approved container when the disconnection is complete.

Scan Tool Method - Preferred

  1. Install a scan tool and turn start the vehicle.
  2. Using the scan tool, navigate to engine control module, control functions, fuel system, depressurize fuel system, and command enable allowing the low pressure fuel pump to shut off.
  3. Allow the engine to idle until the engine stops. The engine will stop in approximately 5-20 seconds.
  4. Attempt to restart the vehicle and repeat step 3. Using the scan tool, verify pressure has dropped to a minimal level.
  5. Turn the ignition OFF.

Disabling Fuel Pump Prime feature - Required when any fuel line is disconnected

    NOTE:

This vehicle incorporates a Fuel Pump Prime Relay Circuit which under certain conditions will prime the fuel pump when a door is opened. If any fuel line is disconnected, it is important to disable the Fuel Pump Prime feature to prevent the fuel pump from priming causing fuel to spray from disconnected lines. Prime feature must remain disabled while any fuel line is disconnected.

  1. After following fuel pressure relief procedure, locate X50A fuse block - underhood.
  2. Remove Fuel Pump Prime Fuse (5A). Electrical Center Identification ViewsElectrical Center Identification Views
  3. Keep fuel pump prime fuse (5A) removed anytime a fuel line is disconnected.

Alternate Method - If a scan tool is not available

    NOTE:

Fuse should be left out anytime a fuel line is disconnected.

  1. Disable the fuel pump by removing the B+ fuel pump control module fuse. Electrical Center Identification ViewsElectrical Center Identification Views
