Front Seat Outboard Seat Back Airbag Replacement

WARNING:

Following the deployment of a side impact air bag, inspect the following parts for damage. Replace these parts if necessary:

  • The seat cushion frame
  • The seat recliner, if equipped
  • The seat adjuster
  • The seat back frame

Failure to do so may cause future personal injury.

WARNING:

Do not repair or replace the seat stitching or seams in the seat back trim cover with an internal mounted seat side airbag module. Replace the complete seat back trim cover from the OEM. Non-OEM seat stitching may cause improper airbag deployment which could result in personal injury.

Preliminary Procedure

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling .
  2. Remove the driver or passenger seat back cushion finish panel. Refer to Front Seat Back Cushion Finish Panel ReplacementFront Seat Back Cushion Finish Panel Replacement (with UWG) .

Procedure

  1. Locally separate the seat cushion cover from the seat cushion pad by pulling the cover away from the pad.
  2. Disengage the J-channel retainers from the frame routed over the airbag module.
  3. Disengage the retainer near the airbag module.
  4. Remove the airbag module nuts (2). Note the airbag module and harness routing for re-installation.
  5. Note the routing of the airbag module studs through the cover during re-installation.
  6. Disengage the J-channel retainers securing the cover underneath the airbag module. The new airbag module should be mounted through the holes in the seat back cover panel.
  7. Remove the airbag module from the two inside cover flaps. Remove the airbag module from the top of the seat back trim cover chute.
  8. Install the airbag module through the top of the seat back trim cover chute. Once the airbag module is in the chute, align the airbag module studs through the chute holes. Be sure not to twist the chute when installing the airbag to the seat back cushion frame.
  9. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Module Handling and Scrapping .
