Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the charge air cooler outlet air tube from the throttle body. Refer to Charge Air Cooler Outlet Air Tube Replacement
  2. Starter Replacement (LTG) » Remove
  3. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (V-Series) and Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Base)
  4. Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement (LT4, LTG) » Remove
  5. {If equipped} Front Axle Propeller Shaft Replacement »Remove
  6. Catalytic Converter Replacement (LTG) »Remove
  7. Disconnect the transmission range selector lever cable terminal (1) from the transmission manual shift lever pin (6).

  8. Slide the retainer (4) forward to release the transmission range selector lever cable (5) from the bracket.
  9. Remove the auxiliary heater pump bracket (3) from the transmission and position aside.

  10. Place an oil drain pan under the transmission fluid cooler pipes (1).

  11. Remove the transmission fluid cooler inlet and outlet pipes (1) from the transmission and position aside or remove from the vehicle as necessary. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet and Outlet Pipe Replacement (LTG With AWD, With V03)Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet and Outlet Pipe Replacement (LTG With AWD, Without V03)Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet and Outlet Pipe Replacement (LTG With RWD, With V03)
  12. Plug the open fluid ports to prevent fluid loss and contamination.
  13. Transmission Converter Cover Replacement (Left Side, M5U) Transmission Converter Cover Replacement (Right Side, M5U) » Remove
  14. Remove the transmission close out plug (1).

  15. Mark the torque converter to flexplate orientation to ensure proper realignment.
  16. Repeat the following steps for all torque converter bolts (1):

    1. Rotate the harmonic balancer center bolt clockwise ONLY, in order to align the torque converter bolt with the starter opening.
    2. Remove and Discard the torque converter bolt.
  17. Remove the catalytic converter bracket (2) from the transmission.

  18. Remove the catalytic converter shield (4) from the engine assembly.

  19. Disconnect the electrical wiring harness retainers from the transmission to engine fasteners and from the transmission case.
  20. Support the transmission with a suitable transmission jack.
  21. Remove the lower right transmission to engine bolt (1).

  22. Remove the lower left transmission to engine bolts (1, 2).

  23. Remove the left upper transmission to engine bolts (1, 2).

  24. Support the transmission with a suitable transmission jack.
  25. Transmission Support Replacement (RWD)Transmission Support Replacement (AWD) » Remove
  26. Tilt the transmission downward just enough to gain access to the upper transmission fasteners.
  27. Disconnect the transmission vent hose (2) and retainer (1) from the transmission, then position aside.

  28. Remove the transmission to engine bolts (1, 2, 3).

  29. Pull the transmission straight back.
  30. Install the J-21366  strap onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
  31. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
  32. Transfer components as necessary.
  33. Flush and flow test the transmission cooler and transmission pipes. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing and Flow Test (8L45 or 8L90)
