Circuit/System Testing

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Ignition Off and all vehicle systems Off, disconnect the harness connector at the Q6 Camshaft Position Actuator. It may take up to 2 minutes for all vehicle systems to power down.
  2. Test for less than 5 Ω between the low reference circuit terminal E and ground.
    • If 5 Ω or greater

      2.1 - Ignition Off, disconnect the harness connector at the K20 Engine Control Module.

      2.2 - Test for less than 2 Ω in the low reference circuit end to end.

      If 2 Ω or greater, repair the open/high resistance in the circuit.

      If less than 2 Ω, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

      If less than 5 Ω go to 3.

  3. NOTE:

    A test lamp must be used for this test. The control circuit is pulled-up to a low current voltage, A voltage on the control circuit is normal.

  4. Ignition ON, engine OFF, verify that a test lamp does not illuminate between the control circuit terminal D and ground.
    • If the test lamp illuminates

      3.1. Ignition Off, disconnect the harness connector at the K20 Engine Control Module, ignition On.

      3.2. Test for less than 1 V between the control circuit and ground.

      If 1 V or greater, repair the short to voltage on the circuit.

      If less than 1 V, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

      If the test lamp does not illuminate go to 4.

  5. Remove the test lamp.
  6. Connect the DMM black lead to the control circuit terminal D. Connect the DMM red lead to B+. Set the DMM on the diode setting. Command the CMP actuator solenoid On and Off with a scan tool. The DMM should transition from O.L. when commanded Off to less than 1 V when commanded On.
    • If the parameter does not correspond to the specified values

      5.1. Ignition Off, disconnect the harness connector at the K20 Engine Control Module.

      5.2. Test for less than 2 Ω in the control circuit end to end.

      If 2 Ω or greater, repair the open/high resistance or short to ground in the circuit.

      If less than 2 Ω, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

      If the parameter corresponds to the specified values go to 6.

  7. Remove the CMP actuator magnet. Perform the Camshaft Position Actuator Magnet Cleaning and Inspection. The CMP actuator magnet should pass the inspection.
    • If the inspection does not pass, Replace the camshaft position actuator magnet.
    • If the inspection does pass go to 7.
  8. Perform the Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Inspection. The CMP Actuator Solenoid Valve should pass the inspection.
    • If the inspection does not pass, Replace the camshaft position actuator solenoid valve.

      If the inspection does pass go to 8.

  9. If all circuits and components test normal, test replace the mechanical camshaft position actuator.
