Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System (LA3, LY9) in Engine Cooling.
  2. Remove the intake manifold flange. Refer to Intake Manifold Flange Replacement .
  3. Remove the water crossover. Refer to Coolant Crossover Pipe Replacement (LA3, LY9) in Engine Cooling.
  4. IMPORTANT: Remove ONLY the exhaust camshaft if the cylinder head is NOT going to be replaced.
  5. Remove the right camshafts. Refer to Camshaft Replacement - Right .
  6. Remove the timing belt tensioner. Refer to Timing Belt Tensioner Replacement .

  8. Remove ONLY the 2 bolts securing the rear timing belt cover to the right cylinder head.
  9. Remove the right exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right (LA3, LY9) in Engine Exhaust.

  11. Remove the right cylinder head bolts (1 thru 8) in the sequence shown.

    Discard the cylinder head bolts.

  12. Remove the right cylinder head from the engine block.
  13. Place the cylinder head on a flat, clean surface with the combustion chambers face-up in order to prevent damage to the deck face.
  14. IMPORTANT: DO NOT reuse the cylinder head gasket.
  15. Remove the right cylinder head gasket.
  16. Remove all remaining gasket material from the engine block using the J 28410  . See Special Tools and Equipment .
  17. Inspect the cylinder head gasket mating surface on the engine block.
  18. Clean and inspect the right cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Cleaning and Inspection .
  19. Disassemble the right cylinder head if necessary. Refer to Cylinder Head Disassemble .
