Park Brake Will Not Release

  1. Did you perform the Park Brake Diagnostic System Check? If so, go to next step. If not, see DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Set the park brake. Observe the Red Brake warning indicator. Did the Red Brake warning indicator remain illuminated? If so, go to next step. If not, see BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR INOPERATIVE  .
  3. Turn OFF the ignition. Install a scan tool. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. With a scan tool, command the park brake relay A ON and OFF. Does the park brake relay A turn ON and OFF with each command? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  5 .
  4. With a scan tool, command the park brake relay B ON and OFF. Does the park brake relay B turn ON and OFF with each command? If so, go to step  9 . If not, go to step  6 .
  5. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the park brake relay A. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Probe the coil side battery positive voltage circuit of the park brake relay A with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Does the test lamp illuminate? If so, go to step  7 . If not, go to step  17 .
  6. Turn OFF the ignition. Disconnect the park brake relay B. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Probe the coil side battery positive voltage circuit of the park brake relay B with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Does the test lamp illuminate? If so, go to step  8 . If not, go to step  17 .
  7. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit of the park brake relay A and the coil side battery positive voltage circuit of the park brake relay A. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . With a scan tool, command the park brake relay A ON and OFF. Does the test lamp turn ON and OFF with each command? If so, go to step  24 . If not, go to step  15 .
  8. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit of the park brake relay B and the coil side battery positive voltage circuit of the park brake relay B. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . With a scan tool, command the park brake relay B ON and OFF. Does the test lamp turn ON and OFF with each command? If so, go to step  25 . If not, go to step  16 .
  9. Probe the switch side battery positive voltage circuit of the park brake relay A with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Does the test lamp illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  17 .
  10. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper between the supply voltage circuit of the park brake relay A and the switch side battery positive voltage circuit of the park brake relay A. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Does the park brake release? If so, go to step  24 . If not, go to next step.
  11. Test the supply voltage circuit of the park brake relay A for an open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  28 . If not, go to next step.
  12. Probe the switch side battery positive voltage circuit of the park brake relay B with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Does the test lamp illuminate? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  17 .
  13. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper between the supply voltage circuit of the park brake relay B and the switch side battery positive voltage circuit of the park brake relay B. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Does the park brake release? If so, go to step  25 . If not, go to next step.
  14. Test the supply voltage circuit of the park brake relay B for an open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  28 . If not, go to step  18 .
  15. Test the control circuit of the park brake relay A for an open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  28 . If not, go to step  19 .
  16. Test the control circuit of the park brake relay B for an open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  28 . If not, go to step  19 .
  17. Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the rear fuse block. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  28 . If not, go to step  23 .
  18. Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the park brake release solenoid. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  28 . If not, go to step  20 .
  19. Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the rear integration module (RIM). Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  28 . If not, go to step  27 .
  20. Inspect the park brake system for proper operation. See PARK BRAKE SYSTEM TESTING  under SYSTEM TESTING. Did you find and correct the condition? If so, go to step  28 . If not, go to next step.
  21. Inspect the disc brake system for proper operation. See DISC BRAKE SYSTEM TESTING  under SYSTEM TESTING. Did you find and correct a condition? If so, go to step  28 . If not, go to next step.
  22. Inspect the hydraulic brake system for proper operation. See BRAKE SYSTEM TESTING  under SYSTEM TESTING. Did you find and correct a condition? If so, go to step  28 . If not, go to step  26 .
  23. Replace the rear fuse block. When finished, go to step  28 .
  24. Replace the park brake relay A. When finished, go to step  28 .
  25. Replace the park brake relay B. When finished, go to step  28 .
  26. Replace the park brake release solenoid. See PARK BRAKE RELEASE SOLENOID  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. When finished, go to step  28 .
  27. Replace the Rear Integration Module (RIM). See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. When finished, go to next step.
  28. Operate the system in order to verify the repair. Did you correct the condition? If so, then repair is complete. If not, go to step  2 .
