Vacuum Brake Booster: Removal

  1. Place the vehicle on a flat surface. Block the front wheels. Apply the parking brake.
  2. To allow access for the removal of the vacuum brake booster, position the gearshift lever into the lowest gear. Remove air cleaner assembly. Remove the cruise control module and position it out of the way. See appropriate CRUISE CONTROL article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Remove the accelerator control cable and position it out of the way. Remove the accelerator control cable bracket and position it out of the way.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connector at the left strut tower. Remove the master cylinder mounting nuts. Disconnect the master cylinder from the brake booster. Move the master cylinder forward just enough to clear the studs on the vacuum brake booster. This will flex the brake pipes slightly. Do not bend or distort the pipes.
  4. Disconnect the shift control cable from the shaft lever pin and position it out of the way. See appropriate AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SERVICING article in TRANSMISSIONS.
  5. Disconnect the vacuum check valve from the vacuum booster. Remove the inlet heater pipe Remove the left closeout insulator panel. Remove the left knee bolster bracket. To access the left lower brake pedal to vacuum brake booster mounting nut, remove the steering column mounting nuts. Lower the steering column and secure it. See appropriate STEERING COLUMN article in STEERING.
  6. Remove the vacuum brake booster pushrod retaining clip from the brake pedal clevis pin. Remove the foam spacer from the brake pedal clevis pin. Disconnect the brake booster pushrod from the brake pedal clevis pin.
  7. Remove the vacuum brake booster mounting nuts from the brake pedal assembly. Remove the vacuum brake booster from the vehicle. Remove the vacuum brake booster mounting gasket, if gasket replacement is necessary.
