Test Y: Low Engine Coolant Indicator Always On

  1. If engine cooling diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If engine cooling diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform ENGINE COOLING DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Observe low coolant level indicator. If low coolant level indicator illuminates, go to next step. If low coolant level indicator does not illuminate, inspect for intermittents. See TROUBLE SHOOTING  .
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect coolant level switch harness connector. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between coolant level switch harness connector terminals "A" (Light Green wire) and "B" (Black wire). Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, near steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Observe low coolant level parameter in Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) data list. If scan tool does not display OK, go to next step. If scan tool displays OK, go to step  7 .
  4. Inspect Black wire for an open or high resistance between ground and coolant level switch harness connector terminal "B". Ground point is located on left side of engine compartment, on left radiator support. If problem does not exist, go to next step. If problem exists, repair Black wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  10 .
  5. Inspect Light Green wire for an open, high resistance or short to voltage between coolant level switch harness connector terminal "A" and IPC harness connector C2 terminal B3. If problem does not exist, go to next step. If problem exists, repair Light Green wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  10 .
  6. Inspect IPC harness connector for poor connections. If problem does not exist, go to step  8 . If problem exists, repair IPC harness connector as necessary. After repair, go to step  10 .
  7. Inspect coolant level switch harness connector for poor connections. If problem does not exist, go to step  9 . If problem exists, repair coolant level switch harness connector as necessary. After repair, go to step  10 .
  8. Replace IPC, then go to step  10 .
  9. Replace coolant level switch. After repair, go to next step.
  10. Operate system to verify repair. If system is not operating correctly, repeat test beginning at step  2 .
