Test H: Brake Warning Indicator Always On

  1. If hydraulic brake diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If hydraulic brake diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform HYDRAULIC BRAKE DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Inspect brake fluid level. If brake fluid level is okay, go to next step. If brake fluid level is not okay, inspect for any leaks in hydraulic system. See appropriate DISC & DRUM article in BRAKES.
  3. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Release parking brake. Using scan tool, observe park brake switch parameter in Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) data list. If scan tool indicates park brake switch parameter as OFF, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate park brake switch parameter as OFF, go to step  5 .
  4. Using scan tool, observe brake fluid level parameter in IPC data list. If scan tool does not indicate brake fluid level parameter as OK, go to step  6 . If scan tool indicates brake fluid level parameter as OK, inspect for intermittents. See TROUBLE SHOOTING  .
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect park brake switch harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, observe park brake switch parameter. If scan tool does not indicate park brake switch parameter as OFF, go to step  7 . If scan tool indicates park brake switch parameter as OFF, go to step  9 .
  6. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect brake fluid level switch harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, observe brake fluid level parameter. If scan tool does not indicate brake fluid level parameter as OK, go to step  8 . If scan tool indicates brake fluid level parameter as OK, go to step  10 .
  7. Inspect Light Blue wire for a short to ground between park brake switch and IPC harness connector C2 terminal B1. If problem does not exist, go to step  11 . If problem exists, repair Light Blue wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  15 .
  8. Inspect Purple wire for a short to ground between ground and brake fluid level switch harness connector terminal "A". Ground point is located on left side of engine compartment, on left radiator core support. If problem does not exist, go to step  11 . If problem exists, repair Purple wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  15 .
  9. Inspect park brake switch harness connector for poor connections. If problem does not exist, go to step  12 . If problem exists, repair park brake switch harness connector as necessary. After repair, go to step  15 .
  10. Inspect brake fluid level switch harness connector for poor connections. If problem does not exist, go to step  13 . If problem exists, repair brake fluid level switch harness connector as necessary. After repair, go to step  15 .
  11. Inspect IPC harness connector for poor connections. If problem does not exist, go to step  14 . If problem exists, repair IPC harness connector as necessary. After repair, go to step  15 .
  12. Replace park brake switch. After repair, go to step  15 .
  13. Replace brake fluid level switch. After repair, go to step  15 .
  14. Replace IPC, then go to next step.
  15. Operate system to verify repair. If system is not operating correctly, repeat test beginning at step  2 .
