Test G: Air Bag Indicator Circuit Malfunction

  1. If air bag system diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If air bag system diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform AIR BAG SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, near steering column. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM). Using scan tool, request Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) data list display, and observe ignition voltage parameter. Ignition voltage should be 9-16 volts. If scan tool indicates ignition voltage is within specified range, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate ignition voltage is within specified range, diagnose charging system. Perform ENGINE ELECTRICAL DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM
  3. Using scan tool, select special functions in Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). While in special functions, select output controls WOW mode. While in WOW mode, instrument panel indicators can be turned on and off. If scan tool commands AIR BAG warning indicator on then off, go to next step. If scan tool does not command AIR BAG warning indicator on then off, go to step  5 .
  4. Replace SDM. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. After repair, perform AIR BAG SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  5. NOTE: AIR BAG warning indicator is not serviceable. Instrument panel cluster must be replaced as a complete unit.
  6. Replace IPC. After repair, perform AIR BAG SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
