Test Al: Driver's Information Center Switch(Es) Inoperative

  1. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, near steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, observe ignition 1 parameter in Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) input data list. If scan tool displays ON, go to next step. If scan tool does not display ON, go to step  12 .
  3. Press and release each Driver's Information Center (DIC) buttons. Using scan tool, observe DIC switch parameters in IPC input data list. If scan tool does not display ON with each button pressed and OFF with each button released, go to next step. If scan tool displays ON with each button pressed and OFF with each button released, inspect for intermittents. See TROUBLE SHOOTING  .
  4. If scan tool does not display OFF when DSPL MODE, ENG/MET, TRIP RESET and TRIP A/B buttons are pressed, go to next step. If scan tool displays OFF when DSPL MODE, ENG/MET, TRIP RESET and TRIP A/B buttons are pressed, go to step  11 .
  5. If scan tool does not display OFF when ON/OFF, INFO RESET, INFO down and INFO up are pressed, go to next step. If scan tool displays OFF when ON/OFF, INFO RESET, INFO down and INFO up are pressed, go to step  11 .
  6. If scan tool does not always display OFF for suspect button, go to next step. If scan tool always displays OFF for suspect button, go to step  8 .
  7. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect suspect DIC switch 7-pin harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, observe suspect DIC switch parameter. If scan tool displays ON for suspect DIC switch, go to step  9 . If scan tool does not display ON for suspect DIC switch, go to step  13 .
  8. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect suspect DIC switch 7-pin harness connector. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between ground and suspect DIC switch harness connector signal circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If scan tool does not display ON for suspect DIC switch, go to step  10 . If scan tool displays ON for suspect DIC switch, go to step  13 .
  9. Inspect signal circuit for a short to ground between ground and suspect DIC switch harness connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If problem does not exist, go to step  14 . If problem exists, repair signal circuit as necessary. After repair, go to step  17 .
  10. Inspect signal circuit for an open or high resistance between suspect DIC switch harness connector and instrument panel. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If problem does not exist, go to step  14 . If problem exists, repair signal circuit as necessary. After repair, go to step  17 .
  11. Inspect Black/White wire for an open or high resistance between ground and suspect DIC switch. Ground point is located behind appropriate kick panel for suspect DIC switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If problem does not exist, go to step  13 . If problem exists, repair Black/White wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  17 .
  12. Inspect Pink wire for an open between rear fuse block and IPC. If problem does not exist, go to step  14 . If problem exists, repair Pink wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  17 .
  13. Inspect suspect DIC switch harness connector for poor connections. If problem does not exist, go to step  15 . If problem exists, repair suspect DIC switch harness connector as necessary. After repair, go to step  17 .
  14. Inspect IPC harness connector for poor connections. If problem does not exist, go to step  16 . If problem exists, repair IPC harness connector as necessary. After repair, go to step  17 .
  15. Replace suspect DIC switch. After repair, go to step  17 .
  16. Replace IPC, then go to next step.
  17. Operate system to verify repair. If system is not operating correctly, repeat test beginning at step  2 .
