Test Ab: Malfunction Indicator Light Always On

  1. If engine controls diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If engine controls diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform ENGINE CONTROL DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Blue 80-pin harness connector C1. PCM is located below air cleaner housing. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Observe Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL). If MIL illuminates, go to next step. If MIL does not illuminate, go to step  5 .
  3. Remove instrument panel. Disconnect Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) harness connector C2. Inspect Brown/White wire for a short to ground between PCM harness connector C1 terminal No. 32 and IPC harness connector C2 terminal A8. See Figure and Figure . If problem does not exist, go to next step. If problem exists, repair Brown/White wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  6 .
  4. Replace IPC, then go to step  6 .
  5. Replace PCM. Program PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After repair, go to next step.
  6. Operate system to verify repair. If system is not operating correctly, repeat test beginning at step  2 .
