DTC P1189: Engine Oil Pressure Switch Circuit Failure: Testing

  1. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, perform INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, near steering column. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, observe engine oil pressure switch parameter in Powertrain Control Module (PCM) engine data 3 list. If engine oil pressure switch parameter does not indicate LOW, go to next step. If engine oil pressure switch parameter indicates LOW, inspect for intermittents. See TROUBLE SHOOTING  .
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect engine oil pressure switch 4-pin harness connector. Engine oil pressure switch is located on center front of engine, near oil filter adapter. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between ground and engine oil pressure switch harness connector terminal "A" (Tan/Black wire). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, observe engine oil pressure parameter. If engine oil pressure parameter does not indicate LOW, go to next step. If engine oil pressure parameter indicates LOW, go to step  5 .
  4. Inspect Tan/Black wire for an open between engine oil pressure switch harness connector terminal "A" and PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 20. If problem does not exist, go to step  7 . If problem exists, repair Tan/Black wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  10 .
  5. Inspect Black wire for an open between ground and engine oil pressure switch harness connector terminal "B". Ground point is located on lower left front corner of engine, on transmission case. If problem does not exist, go to next step. If problem exists, repair Black wire as necessary. After repair, go to step  10 .
  6. Inspect engine oil pressure switch harness connector for poor connections. If problem does not exist, go to step  8 . If problem exists, repair engine oil pressure switch harness connector as necessary. After repair, go to step  10 .
  7. Inspect PCM harness connector for poor connections. If problem does not exist, go to step  9 . If problem exists, repair PCM harness connector as necessary. After repair, go to step  10 .
  8. Replace engine oil pressure switch. After repair, go to step  10 .
  9. Replace PCM. Program PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After repair, go to next step.
  10. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within code enable criteria.See CODE ENABLE CRITERIA  . If DTC resets, repeat test beginning at step  2 .
