Test N: Cruise Indicator Inoperative

NOTE: Cruise control system operates properly but CRUISE indicator is inoperative.
  1. If cruise control diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If cruise control diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to CRUISE CONTROL DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECKS.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). See Figure. Select Powertrain Control Module (PCM) data list on scan tool. Start engine and drive vehicle at a speed greater than 25 MPH (40 KM/H). Engage cruise control. Observe CRUISE REQUESTED parameter. If CRUISE REQUESTED parameter is YES, go to next step. If CRUISE REQUESTED parameter is not YES, go to step  4.
  3. Stop vehicle. Turn ignition off and back on. This will activate Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) bulb check. Observe CRUISE indicator during the bulb check. If CRUISE indicator illuminates during bulb check, problem is intermittent, check wiring and connections. If CRUISE indicator does not illuminate during bulb check, go to step  9.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect cruise control module located on left front shock tower, behind air cleaner assembly. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper between ground and cruise control module connector terminal "J" (Light Blue/Black wire). Start engine and drive vehicle at a speed greater than 25 MPH (40 KM/H). Engage cruise control. Observe CRUISE REQUESTED parameter. If CRUISE REQUESTED parameter is not YES, go to next step. If CRUISE REQUESTED parameter is YES, go to step  7.
  5. Check for open, high resistance or short to voltage in Light Blue/Black wire between cruise control module and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector C2 terminal No. 24. See Figure. If no problems are found, go to next step. If any problems are found and corrected, go to step  11.
  6. Check for poor connections at PCM connector. If no problems are found, go to step  8. If any problems are found and corrected, go to step  11.
  7. Check for poor connections at cruise control module connector. If no problems are found, go to step  10. If any problems are found and corrected, go to step  11.
  8. Replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in BODY CONTROL MODULES - DEVILLE article. After repairs, go to step  11.
  9. Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to step  11.
  10. Replace cruise control module. See CRUISE CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEMS - DEVILLE & ELDORADO article. After repairs, go to next step.
  11. After repairs, recheck operation of CRUISE indicator. If indicator operates properly, repair is complete. If indicator does not operate properly, return to step  2.
