Test Al: Poor Video Image On Night Vision Display

  1. Operate night vision system. See NIGHT VISION  under DESCRIPTION & OPERATION. If any problems exist, go to next step.
  2. Position vehicle approximately 25 feet (8 meters) from the nearest object. Cover lower windshield with a mat. Cover ambient light sensor. Turn ignition on. Turn headlights on. Turn head-up display (HUD) on. If after 45 seconds, night vision image does not appear normal, go to next step. If after 45 seconds, night vision video image appears normal, problem is intermittent, check wiring and connections between night vision camera and HUD module.
  3. If video image does not just appear when temperature is less than 50°F (10° C), go to next step. If poor video image only appears when outside temperature is less than 50° F (10° C), go to step  12.
  4. Inspect the windshield, HUD module and night vision camera for dirt or debris. If no problem was found, go to next step. If a problem was found and corrected, go to step  21.
  5. Inspect the lens of night vision camera for cracks, chips or scratches. If no problem was found, go to step  19. If a problem was found and corrected, go to next step.
  6. Check night vision camera for proper alignment. Adjust if needed. See NIGHT VISION CAMERA AIMING  under ADJUSTMENTS. If no problem was found, go to next step. If a problem was found and corrected, go to step  21.
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect night vision camera harness connector. Connect a test light between battery positive voltage and night vision camera harness connector C1 terminal "C" (Yellow wire). See Figure. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step  14.
  8. Connect a test light between battery positive voltage and night vision camera harness connector "D" (Dark Green wire). See Figure. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step  15.
  9. Disconnect in-line connector C205 (located at left front of center console). Connect a test light between battery positive voltage and in-line connector C205 terminal B5 (Bare wire). See Fig 1. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  11.
  10. Check for an open or high resistance in Bare wire between in-line connector C205 terminal B5 (female side) and end of wire. If no problem was found, go to step  17. If a problem was found and corrected, go to step  21.
  11. Check for an open or high resistance in bare wire between in-line connector C205 (located at left front of center console) terminal B5 and HUD module harness connector terminal "J". If no problem was found, go to step  16. If a problem was found and corrected, go to step  21.
  12. Check for an open or short to ground in Brown wire between night vision camera harness connector C1 (design 1) terminal "F" or harness connector C2 (design 2) terminal "A" and NIGHT VISION fuse (10-amp) of rear fuse block. See Figure and Figure . If no problem was found, go to next step. If a problem was found and corrected, go to step  21.
  13. Check for an open in Black/White wire between night vision camera harness connector C2 (design 2) terminal "B"and ground (located at driver's door jamb) or in Black/White wire between night vision camera harness connector C1 (design 1) terminal "E" and ground (located on left radiator support). See Figure. If no problem was found, go to step  17. If a problem was found and corrected, go to step  21.
  14. Check for a short to ground in Yellow wire between night vision camera harness connector terminal "C" and HUD module harness connector terminal "K". See Figure and Figure . If no problem was found, go to step  16. If a problem was found and corrected, go to step  21.
  15. Check for a short to ground in Dark Green wire between night vision camera harness connector terminal "D" and HUD module harness connector terminal "L". See Figure and Figure . If no problem was found, go to next step. If a problem was found and corrected, go to step  21.
  16. Check for faulty connections at HUD module. If no problem was found, go to step  18. If a problem was found and corrected, go to step  21.
  17. Check for faulty connections at night vision camera harness connector. If no problem was found, go to step  20. If a problem was found and corrected, go to step  21.
  18. Replace HUD module. See HUD MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After replacement, go to step  21.
  19. Replace night vision camera lens. See NIGHT VISION CAMERA LENS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to step  21.
  20. Replace night vision camera. See NIGHT VISION CAMERA  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to next step.
  21. Operate night vision in order to verify repair. If system operates correctly, system is okay at this time. If system does not operate correctly, return to step  2.
