Driver's Information Center Switches Inoperative

NOTE: This procedure will diagnose DSPL MODE, ENG/MET, TRIP RESET, TRIP A/B, ON/OFF, INFO RESET, INFO Down and INFO Up Driver's Information Center (DIC) switch buttons.
  1. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If instrument cluster diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). See Figure . Turn ignition on. Press and release each Driver's Information Center (DIC) switch. Select Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) data list on scan tool. Monitor DISPLAY MODE SWITCH, DISPLAY TRIP RESET SW, ENGLISH/METRIC SW, INFO. RESET SWITCH, INFORMATION DOWN SWITCH, INFORMATION UP SWITCH, ON/OFF SWITCH AND TRIP ODOMETER A/B SWITCH status. If status is ON when all switches are pressed and OFF when all switches are released, check for poor connections at DIC switch connectors. If status is not ON when all switches are pressed and not OFF when all switches are released, go to next step.
  3. If scan tool displays OFF when each switch is pressed, go to next step. If scan tool does not display OFF when each switch is pressed, go to step  5 .
  4. Using scan tool, monitor IGNITION 1 status. If IGNITION 1 status is not ON, go to step  12 . If IGNITION 1 status is ON, go to step  14 .
  5. Turn on parking lights. Cover ambient light sensor located in defroster grille. Observe operation of all switches on left or right DIC switch. If status is not OFF when each switch is pressed on left or right DIC switch, go to next step. If status is OFF when each switch is pressed on left or right DIC switch, go to step  11 .
  6. If status is always ON for suspect switch, go to next step. If status is not always ON for suspect switch, go to step  8 .
  7. Turn ignition off. Disconnect suspect DIC switch. Turn ignition on. Monitor suspect DIC switch status. If suspect DIC switch status is ON, go to step  9 . If suspect DIC switch status is not ON, go to step  13 .
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect suspect DIC switch. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between signal circuit of suspect DIC switch and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Turn ignition on. Monitor suspect DIC switch status. If suspect DIC switch status is not ON, go to step  10 . If suspect DIC switch status is ON, go to step  13 .
  9. Check for short to ground in signal circuit of suspect DIC switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If circuit is okay, go to step  14 . If faulty circuit is found and repaired, go to step  17 .
  10. Check for open or high resistance in signal circuit of suspect DIC switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If circuit is okay, go to step  14 . If faulty circuit is found and repaired, go to step  17 .
  11. For left DIC switches, check for open or high resistance in Black/White wire between ground G200 and left DIC switch connector terminal No. 7. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . For right DIC switches, check for open or high resistance in Black/White wire between ground G201 and left DIC switch connector terminal No. 7. If circuit is okay, go to step  13 . If faulty circuit is found and repaired, go to step  17 .
  12. Check for open, short to ground, short to voltage or high resistance in Pink wire between IGN1 fuse (10-amp) located in rear fuse block and IPC connector C2 terminal A3. See Figure . If circuit is okay, go to step  14 . If faulty circuit is found and repaired, go to step  17 .
  13. Check for poor connections at suspect DIC switch connector. If connections are okay, go to step  15 . If faulty connections are found and repaired, go to step  17 .
  14. Check for poor connections IPC connector. If connections are okay, go to step  16 . If faulty connections are found and repaired, go to step  17 .
  15. Replace suspect DIC switch. See DRIVERS INFORMATION CENTER (DIC) SWITCHES  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to step  17 .
  16. Replace Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to next step.
  17. Recheck DIC switch operation. If DIC switches operate properly, repair is complete. If DIC switches do not operate properly, go to step  2 .
