Ball Joint Checking
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2000 GMC Yukon XL, 2000 GMC Yukon, 2000 GMC Sierra, 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe, and 2000 Chevrolet Suburban. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Replace ball joint rubber grease seal if cut or damaged.
Raise and support vehicle using jackstand under lower control arm, near lower ball joint. Place a dial indicator on spindle hub. Pry tire and wheel assembly between lower control arm and outer race to measure vertical movement. Note dial indicator reading. If reading exceeds .13" (3.3 mm), replace loose ball joint.
